Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today, we are going to talk about the Dancing Plague of 1518: a story where life in a charming French town was so horrible that the peasants broke into a dance… and couldn’t stop until they died.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my KZfaq for the visual side of things.

This story reminds me of the “dancing cat disease” (aka Minamata Disease) which resulted from mercury poisoning from industrial waste being dumped into the water supply in Minamata, Japan in the 50’s. It’s a really crazy story involving dancing/suicidal cats and a government cover up.

My Father had St. Vitas Dance as a child. He had rheumatic fever. Saint Vitus' Dance is an alternative name for the movement disorder Sydenham's chorea (chorea minor). This condition presents as jerky, uncoordinated movements of the face, feet, and hands, and sometimes the limbs. It is usually associated with acute rheumatic fever, an inflammatory disease caused by childhood infection by group A streptococcal bacteria, such as in scarlet fever or strep throat. The disease may also be associated with pregnancy and hyperthyroidism.

Side note: in the original wizard of oz books the shoes were silver. The wizard of oz was the first movie made in color. The studio felt red would look better on screen. @@berlyngrey9242 I don't wish it on anyone! Its such a hard feeling to describe for people that haven't experienced it because its so intense and just unstoppable! I've spent HOURS walking up and down the stairs trying to get a little relief! I ended up getting this liquid calcium/magnesium supplement (I think the brand was Blue Bonnet) and 2 big tablespoons of that stuff before bed actually gave me enough relief to sleep. Watching this video it was all I could think about, and wondering what those people consumed that caused them to experience this!

@@nicolehealy7833 oh wow. Thankfully the longest in one time I dealt with it was a few hours. I just kicked my legs and kept stretching them which I was informed makes it worse. I'd even massage my leg muscles hoping to curb it. I get it worse in my arms though. I was told muscles relaxers help but as I stay away from narcotics I've also heard tonic water helps too. I haven't had it in awhile thankfully but if it happens again I'll give your method or the tonic water a try.

She will be recognizing Bailey's voice. They hear everything going on around them in Utero. To fit in with today's History I will add a trivia feature; THE UNBORN LOVE TO DANCE! 🕺 💃 Just maybe not the hopping around part.

Love every episode! But must share: the church where I got married--in 2002--wouldn't allow dancing in their rec hall behind the sanctuary. So we held the reception in a different church's rec hall. It was hilarious to my husband and me.

This story was one of the most fascinating pieces of history you have shared with us. It reminds me of the Brother’s Grim version of Snow White where the evil queen is forced to wear bronze shoes and dance until she died.

@@starlaoutlaw7926 that too but you know Disney doesn’t do coincidence they probably were throwing a little bit of renaissance history in there I mean the Sanderson Sisters were 300 years old 🤔

"Frau" is German for "Mrs" or "Madame." This part of France, Alsace, was historically fought over with Germany, and the Alsatians spoke both languages and were kind of a hybrid ethnic group

The historical records available only name her as Frau Troffea/Trauffea, so though ‘frau’ is a designation and not an actual first name, it is the only identification available besides her surname that can be accurately utilized, and thus why Bailey stated it as part of the woman’s name.
