I was working with this feature last night, and accidentally plugged in a wrong kit number and got shared matches between kits that shouldn't be related. I've seen the posts here about husbands and wives showing shared matches. But I have a rather unusual situation with my tree. All 4 of my grandparents are from widely varied geographic locations. Maternal grandmother: largely French ancestry, born in Detroit Michigan. Her husband was largely German who settled in Pennsylvania. They met when both went to NYC to be actors. My paternal side is the result of 2 generations of military service. My grandfather's ancestors came from Ireland. He was born in Albany NY and met his wife when he was stationed in Nebraska. So far I have compared a half dozen different kits, known to be from different lines, and ALL have shared matches.

The places you said (other than Ireland maybe) are actually quite similar genetically.

Not necessarily as far as having to match all of the people your parent matches. There are several people that I dna match whose connection I know and who are through either my maternal line, but she doesn't share either enough dna with them to meet the company threshold OR she doesn't match them at all even though they are still cousins through her maternal line. The first example given would apply to parents as well.

I have been using this tool to make comparisons between myself, maternal half-siblings, and our mother and something is going on that I don't understand. I hope that you can explain it to me. There is a match that we all 4 have DNA matches to at well over 100cM (our mother over 250cM) and we know his place in our family. However, in the part of the "People who match both, or 1 of 2 kits" that shows one kit and not the other, he shows up as a unique match for my sister and also our mother. How is he a unique match to either of them when he matches all of us at such a high level? The comparison parameters are left at the defaults for all of us. Thank you for any help with this.

I ran this yesterday. Reviewed it and I do not see the three sections as per the video. I only have who we both match. So I am assuming that because the other match and I are at MRCA 4.6, that we both match all of the people on the list. There are no separate lists for just me or the other match. Am I correct? Thanks so much.

That's People who match both! OR 1 of 2 kits. I noticed when I used this under the column that was supposed to be what I thought was shared matches it brought up people that were not on my list, but it was on my matches list. So I'm not so sure this is a good way to find people who match you both as it will add people in there who only match one of you but not the other as well as people who match you both.

I have Gedmatch kits for my dad and another male ancestor that is a Y-DNA match (we share the same 3rd great grandfather). His line moved several states away from mine at least 4 generations ago (mid 1800s) so there should be no cross contamination from newer generations. I ran the test comparing the 2 kits and get 20+ matches. So then, now what? This video doesn't really say how to proceed finding out how these matches tie in. If I look up each match separately, I see that most did not submit their results from Ancestry. Those that did have a different name under Ancestry because I can't find them on the Ancestry site by the DNA matches using their names, so I can't find any family trees. So does it come down to emailing each of these matches individually and seeing if they can point me to a family tree? I guess what I'm saying is, how do you take these matches to the next level to find a common ancestor?

I am working with lots of 4th cousins and probably one 3rd cousin. So I was wondering....if you had a couple 3rd cousins, should those 3rd cousins be able to see each other? The one 3rd cousin does not match to any other 4th cousin. I do see a couple 4th cousins that seem to match 6 to 8 other 4th cousins. I think they must have some connection between them?

Hi, thanks for great videos. I have a rather lengthy question: I have used the Comparing 2 kits a lot but had the feeling it always shows common matches when comparing any 2 kits. I made the following experiment: I took 20 random kits from my Tier 1 500 matches with default 7 cM, paired the 20 kits into 10 pairs and ran the tool with the default 10 cM. Of these 10 comparisons all gave matches who matched both kits. The number varied from at least 10 to over 40. I don¨t belong to an endogamous population (although I score 5% Ashkenazi on FamilyFinder), my roots are Scandinavian. Neither is there any indication my parents are related. I think there is a good chance that at least a few of these 10 pairs have one kit from my father´s side and the other from my mother´s. In those cases there should not be any kits who matches both, am I not right? So, what do you think is the explanation? Is this tool simply very unprecise with many false matches and thus not very useful?
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. They might match you through your father or mother, but remember they also have a father and mother. So while a match may match you through their father=, they may match a random match through their mother.

Probably most of them since I have found matches on all the different sites and most don't upload to Gedmatch unfortunately. The Caribbean is not the easiest area to do research due to a lack of records. The luck I had was with ship lists and airline manifests but those are in the 1900's. If they've emigrated to the USA I have a little more luck. I find matches but generally difficult to get back to a common ancestor.

Hi Andy I'm hoping you can help me with a bit of a puzzle. A friend and I have both had our DNA tested through Ancestry. I have uploaded the kits to GEDmatch which shows no DNA in common when I do a 1:1 analysis. She also shows no DNA in common with any of my known relatives on my paternal side. However when I run a comparison to find who matches both her kit and mine, I get about 20 hits. What does this mean? Are we related, but just don't share enough DNA for it to show up? Help!

@dorrykelley6210
@dorrykelley6210 4 жыл бұрын
I wanted to know the same thing. Based on his examples, I gather that the Generations Differences number suggests which generation the match belongs to in comparison to the kit holder. So those with a 0.x would be in the same generation as the kit number, 1.x would be within one generation, 2.x would be within two generations, etc... So his mother is 0.0, and first cousins were label 2.0 The lower the number, the closer they would be to the kit holder's personal generation.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 жыл бұрын
These numbers give you a rough idea how far apart by generations you and one DNA match are from a third match. A value zero could mean the match is equally distant from each of the specified kits. A value of 0.5 should tell you that you have a distance of half-sibling or 1x-removed cousin in play; a value of 1, a full-cousin step. Use this value as an indicator as which matches to triangulate first but nothing more.

tried this today & it worked fine when I compared mine with my mother's; got an error when I compared mine with my children ("ERROR: Kit number [kit number was in this space] is invalid"). I know the kit numbers are not invalid, so what's the deal? ETA 1: went back to compare mine & mother's again & now I'm getting the same error for her, too. Played around with it (put mine 1st, then hers) & it seems that no matter what number I put in the first box, it errors telling me it's invalid... ETA 2: still playing with it--noticed that when I copy/paste the kit numbers into the boxes, it adds "%09" to the end of each of them, but they don't show on the line, only when you click in the box does it show the complete set of digits it's using. Deleting the added characters makes it work, but why do I have to go through all of that? Surely, I'm not the only one using copy/paste?

Seems like you're implying that everyone in the shared match list is related through the same line/ancestor... but I've seen a lot of coincidentally shared matches. @FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 5 жыл бұрын
The majority of people in your shared match list are going to be related through the same ancestral line, especially if the two of you match that person on the same segment. That's a good starting point for any researcher until information comes along to prove otherwise. That doesn't mean the exceptions don't matter, just that they are exceptions.
@DenaRs
@DenaRs 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, matching on the same segment is pretty concrete. Managing 17 DNA kits I see a lot of exceptions. I had a light bulb moment when I realized that all shared segments between two people might not be from the identified shared ancestor. That changed how I handle and label each segment.

Separately we each match him "two-way" with groups of overlapping persons. Should we, separately, show up as a line on those tests - we don't. And running against each other, with lowered thresholds, should he show up - he doesn't. I've searched with CMD/Ctrl-F by kit number. I looked through the questions and did not see any like this. My genealogy research is complicated, and I am trying to determine if uploading my Ancestry.com DNA results can help. For whatever reason, my paternal grandfather married (?) my grandmother under an assumed name. Together they had 7 children, who never knew that the family surname was simply created out of thin air. On her deathbed, very old and very frail, my grandmother revealed this to me, along with my grandfather’s actual family name. DNA has pointed us to that name on Ancestry, but communication with our matches has yielded no information. Would GEDmatch be helpful?

Just to say, keep going. I was in the same situation. My maternal grandfather ran away to the army and (unbeknown to us) changed his name. He used the alias all his life and married using the alias. So when I began research I got no where as I didn't even suspect the name was false. Then I found a tree online (before DNA) with my grand mother's family and a brick wall about her husband. The TREE owner turned out to be a first cousin I had never met. She is 20 years or more older than I. We exchanged notes. Crucially she remembered when she was a child hearing my grand mother jokingly say that their surname wasn't really theirs. I'LL SKIP THE DETAIL BUT from there went on to find my grand father's real name and his birth certificate. Lot more research. His father was a SWEDISH seaman who died at sea 3 months before my grandfather was born. All seemed too far fetched for most of my mother's family! Then DNA came along and confirmed my paper research. I had lots of matches from the SWEDISH county where the seaman I had found was born, including a strong match to a descendant of his brother. KEEP GOING! YOU WILL GET THERE.

How do you use that?? Is 0.1 one generation difference? Is 0.0 same generation? I don't understand. If the 3rd row under each kit is Gen and it says 3.4, for me and 2.7 for my Uncle, does that mean it is 3.4 generations back from myself?? And 2.7 from my Uncle? I didn't cover that row as it's not particularly useful. I highlighted what you should focus on. So a "generations difference" of 0 (zero) could mean that both kits share the same total cM with the third kit. In DNA matching, that's not particularly helpful since your shared cM's could be too small to be useful. Since you'll likely have too many matches for you to reasonably investigate them all, focus on those with the strongest match (or cMs).

My half brother and I submitted our 23andMe kit to Gedmatch. 23andMe results show that we have no DNA in common. However GedMatch shows that we have roughly 13 individuals with shared DNA to both of us. I am at a lost right now, on how to process this information.

@@FamilyHistoryFanatics Along those same lines, My brother, mom, and I (family 1) match another family (family 2) btwn 3 and 4 cM. When I did the Comparing Two Kits on GEDmatch Genesis, family 1 has matches with family 2 with matches btwn 10 cM and 30 cM. Although family 1 doesn't match family 2 with the 10 cM minimum, but both families have a few similar matches, does this mean family 1 and family 2 are related, just very distantly related?

3:30 Did you realize that on the third list (the matches for just your cousin) you are the first element on the list? This doesn't make any sense to me. The same happens on the second list, your cousin is there even though the list is supposedly based on the matches that you don't share with your cousin.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is a artifact of programming. When it looks at a match list, it automatically excludes the kit being matched. So, kit A doesn't match kit A on the match list. This means that for an unshared match list, kit A doesn't match kit A, but kit A matches kit B.

@FamilyHistoryFanatics

Generations difference is how closely person 1 is to match A minus how close person 2 is to match A. So if it was 0, then you are likely both 2C or 3C or 4C to that match. If it is 1 then you are a 2C and person 2 is a 2C1R or 1C1R to the match.

Hi I have looked at my comparison (only joined two days ago when I found a 3rd/4th cousin. So comparing me and her. Her mom is my 4th Gen on the chart, and a 1 for her, so it’s a generation gap of 3. But some are coming up as 4.1 to me and 4.2 to her meaning a difference of 0.1, does this mean it’s a a relative from the same generation as the one we connect to (same 3rd Great Grandparent I believe) I.e a brother of the two sisters we come off. Or is it closer to her by a generation? Thanks in advance

I am trying to find people related to my maternal grandmother. I have my Mom DNA and I have a distant relative that comes up close to my mom. When the related parent is unknown, this is a difficult case. Usually you are going to need to find how her other matches are related to each other to determine the family line this distant relative belongs to.

It's possible that your genetic matches have not transferred their DNA to GEDmatch. Perhaps request that your DNA matches from other platforms transfer their DNA there. You might have to walk them through the process of how.

Triangulation, which confirms common ancestors, has DNA that is shared between three people at the same spot. Now, it won't say you're shared in the same way. One could be more closely related to you than the other, but you will have a common ancestor. This tool helps you know that three people have a common ancestor, it's then up to you to use shared cMs for close to how that relationship plays out.

Yes and no. Yes, it helps if you know the person you're comparing to. No, because sometimes you recognize some of the matches of the unknown person that you're comparing yourself to. Genetic genealogy research is like building a puzzle with no picture. You have to keep playing with the pieces to see how they fit.
