Great overview of how the tool works! I not only understand how the tool works, I learned a bunch about DNA comparison and mapping. Thank you!

Wow ... what a well organized, articulate, and instructive presentation! I'd begun DNA painting last night, just experimenting here and there. Now I feel much more confident about mapping, and better ready to pay attention to and to make use of all the various tools I hadn't noticed nor understood before. Thanks so much, Blaine! ... and kudos and thanks to Jonny Perl!

Great starter video. Now that I have some matches painted, what next? It would be great to have a video (or series of them) that show how to read, interpret and get meaning from the painting!

Thank you for putting this together Blaine. I'm curious on your thoughts if you are creating a profile for yourself if you add the segments for your parents and how you add them. It seems like it is not necessary to add parents and siblings.

Thank you! I really like the tool. I would also love to see how all the data can help us discover how we are connected to new matches.

Best thing I did using DNA Painter. Highly recommend, great if you have family to know the maternal or paternal. Have a bit of endogamy, but still great.

If you have verified that small segments as low a 3 cM's are valid through autosomal triangulation, will the total number of shared cM's at 3 cM's or larger still coincide with the M.R.C.A. between 2 cousins? In other words, will the tool that allows us to type in total number of shared cM's still highlight likely cousin relationships? Thank you so much for your work!

How will someone know which ancestors your DNA match and you share if both of your match and you have on your paternal grandfather and your paternal grandmother side of the family? Why I asked this question is because my cousin father is from one of my paternal grandfather side and cousin's mother is on one of the lines on my paternal grandmother side of my family tree.

I have only one second cousin related to my Dad's mother. He did not know who his bio Dad was. I am new to genealogy and have no living relatives to ask any questions about his father. I have a couple of 3-4 cousins on his side but they match up to his mom. Does this mean that no one on his bio Dads family have not been tested? I tried to figure out DNA painter but was unable to figure it out. Thank you very much.

This seems to work if you basically know the paternal side and maternal side. How do you figure it out if a parent/grandparent were adopted. I have done a Mirror Tree on Ancestry, I have figured out the possible family link on both sides, based on DNA and matches. Yet, I don't know which would be the paternal side, and which the maternal side. It seems from the DNA painter, I would just make it up, and then later possibly figure it out by waiting for more matches. Then assigning colors, it seems like from your illustration, for every person I am trying to match with, their "paternal/maternal" side would have different colors. Hence, if I am then looking at several DNA matches I may have several colors representing paternal, and several representing maternal. I think I would go bonkers the more I add to the painter.

What do you think of having a standard use of colour codes? Resistors use a colour code.

I start from the beginning in DNA painter, it asks me to put my name and if I'm female. So I did that. My question is how do painter knows my DNA, to compare to the rest people I'm putting in there. Is there a way to put my own DNA in there so it can be compared to me?

Does this not work on a Mac? I made three "Profiles" and they show just fine on the chromosomes, but I cannot view all three at once. I can only view them one at a time. I have put them in two groups, but only one group name shows in the "Key" at a time.

Val - it sounds to me as if you've created separate profiles where you intended to create separate groups. A profile is intended to correspond to a DNA kit - so one per DNA test. Ah - I see you emailed about this and this was indeed the issue!

DNA Painter would be great if they didn't incorrectly name GRAND relatives. There is no such thing as a "great uncle" nor a "great great aunt". It is uncle, GRANDuncle, great GRANDuncle, 2nd great GRANDuncle, etc. We have GRANDParents, not greatparents. Hard to take a site seriously that has such terrible naming errors.
