@@MalloriaAnn The defendant is the property management. It’s his job to be on the look out for things like this. He’s literally getting paid to be nosy. A lot of couples unofficially cohabitate: they basically live at their partner’s house but they have their own residence as well. It sounds like that’s why the plaintiff and his girlfriend were doing because the defendant said he was seeing her all the time. Plus she was bringing her dog to the apartment and the plaintiff hadn’t paid the pet deposit so the landlord would have to sue him for damages caused by the dog.

Without a pet deposit, the landlord doesn’t have the funds to cover damage that can be caused by a dog frequently being in the apartment. If your lease forbids you from having anyone living with you then yes your landlord does have the right to restrict how often you can have a visitors.

The term “living with” is actually a very broad term and it can interpreted numerous ways. In my mind, if someone stays at your place more than they stay at their own, these person is living with you. You see it differently. That’s why you need to make sure the terms are clearly defined in a contract before you sign it.

I don't understand the question. My last girlfriend stayed here for as much as a week at a time, checked my mail when I was out of town, popped over to visit whenever she wanted. At one point, I went to the management office and told them that I needed a spare key so that she could come and go as she pleased. They said "OK" and charged me $75. I had a key to her place. Neither of us was on the other's lease. Why is this question even relevant? No, she's not on the lease. Why does it matter? Are things different in the US?

Rent controlled isn’t the same as income based housing. Rent control in NYC just means his rent price is locked in for a certain amount of time. Like it can’t increase every year like normal apartments. Income based housing where rent is controlled is based on income, meaning you pay what you can afford. He isn’t in thst type of situation. NYC renting is a whole different ballgame.

I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t live somewhere knowing 8m unwanted or anxious all the time worrying about a nosey property manager. And if he’s traveling for work so often why live in nyc and pay such high rent? He could move out the city and save a ton. The plaintiff just seems sketchy to me. It’s a lot of fun at work when you say “okay, I sent the report over to Jorge, and he-“ And your co-worker is confused as heck until you describe what Jorge looks like or what department he’s in. Co-worker: Oh! You mean George! Me: Yeah. Jorge. Anyway, Jorge said… Lol, and just keep passive aggressively correcting people until most of the office is using the right pronunciation. Once that happens it makes it easy to identify the Karens because they’re usually the ones digging in their heels saying “that doesn’t spell ‘horr-hey’! It spells George! This is America! We use English!” Lots easier to know who to avoid.
