Perceptions and Reality of Small Arms in Afghanistan

There certainly exist a large number of myths and misconceptions about small arms in Afghanistan. Everything from the names of certain firearms available to how they are perceived in the country has been over exaggerated or hyped up to the point of no return. Surprisingly there are almost as many myths in the country of Afghanistan itself than those that exist in the United States and Europe. Some of these are quite harmless but others involve safety and safe firearms handling which can at times lead to negligent discharge and death.
In this video Miles discusses a number of these myths and misconceptions while addressing the reality of small arms on the ground in the country itself. Everything from incorrect names, how different firearms are priced in the society, to why safety standards are so dangerously low within the city of Kabul when it comes to small arms handling is discussed in great depth.

aaron rothe slow your role dude. Think of it like this. Miles is in Afghanistan where speaking their way makes him more understandable there. Do you also prefer immigrants who come to your country to speak your language clearly without a super heavy accent that makes understanding them difficult? Of course you do.

@Para_Pawel No, IQ is at best 50% inheritable according to recent twin studies. I think you're an idiot hoping desperately to shoe-horn race into this as a simple solution, it's simply not the case. I grew up in the suburbs of DC and as such have met people from all over the world, people of every race, every class, and I can say race is a terrible indicator of IQ or morality or criminality. You want my hot-take on Afganistan? Everybody who was smart fucking left the country decades ago, I'd say that's the problem all over the ME, we've given people an easy way out so instead of fighting for their country the smart or dedicated people spam Visa applications and put in the effort to GTFO. Now their kids are being educated in the west where they actually exceed many natives in school, I sat next to the hottest Afgan girl in my US Gov class in high school and she was very western, smart, modern, liberal (in the classical sense), and rich... If her family and the many others like them returned to Afganistan at once, like Zionist Jews to Isreal, then Afganistan would immediately get an average IQ boost and a ruling class that actually knows wtf their doing. The Brain-Drain Effect is very dramatic in poor conflict zones no matter what races are involved.

According to: Plomin, Robert and Ian J. Deary, "Genetics and intelligence differences: five special findings." (Molecular psychiatry 20.1 - 2015, page: 98-108) it is 80%. 50% comes from a study from 2003, so the 80% number is more recent.

Good overview. First time I went to a weapons market in Iraq I was surprised at the prices. A few examples---9mm Glocks (most of which had the drop in full auto plate) were generally $1000 ish. Russian stamped AKs---$2500ish (milled were over $3k). Chinese stamped AKs (legit Norincos) were only like $800-1000 and the dealers said it was because people thought everything from China was crap. Odd man...

That's funny because everyone stateside worships Norinco AKs, not that they're bad guns, but in most corners of the world people do think Chinese guns and ammo are total garbage. What time I've been able to spend in a few European shooting communities Norinco AKs were definitely considered garbage compared to stamped Russians, and in Iraq and Afghanistan the people who carried them that I encountered definitely did not think highly of Chinese weapons and thought even lower of Chinese ammunition. I would frequently hear that if anything was going to blow up your gun it would likely be Chinese ammo.

Miles, thanks for taking the time to make this video. This is fascinating insight that only someone on-ground, embedded with the local populace could get. We don't get the same type of exposure, even on deployments, and often times I wish I got the same type of interaction as you have as a visiting civilian.
@KeyboardWarrior101st

I agree, but I found that my interactions with civilians was a lot different when I spent extended weeks in North Africa '14, and Egypt in '15, than a combat deployment in AFG '12-'13. For my case, without the uniform and gear, I was able to weave through bazaars, drink tea with locals freely, and was constantly invited to break bread. Of course, without the uniform I also had to escape getting kidnapped in the wrong part of town, and sleep with a dive knife under my pillow every night.

I was wondering why you never came across the ANA or AP, but I guess the countryside kept you away from it. Spent 2.5 years in urban settings all over Iraq, with many mission throughout Baghdad alone. The IA and IP were terrible with firearm safety. So many NDs that we made a point to always stay clear of them, especially at the clearing barrels outside the compounds as most happened a few feet from the barrels. On a side note, some of their firearm tendencies are just idiotic. We were hanging out on the porch in the evening, when thousands of red streaks shot up into the sky for a couple minutes. I had no idea what the f--- was going on, along with most everyone there. The Triple Canopy guy living with us said Iraq just won the soccer match against Iran, and they were celebrating. That wasn't the first time he had seen that. Some seconds later, we had some bullets hitting the top of the house.
@9HoleReviews
@9HoleReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Gary Fontenot we worked with the ANA and ANP, and I don’t think it’s a mystery that there are many of them who are dingbats when it comes to weapons.. even civilians here know that. That said, Miles’ analysis on where that type of weapon culture originated from is truly interesting. It’s very easy for us to see what people do, but the “why” is the part that takes a scholar to learn and research.

He's a very smart and streetwise guy. I remember Miles' very early videos on TFBTV and how people in the comments gave him shit. He used to look nervous in front of the camera but don't most of us? I saw something impressive in the guy though honestly and when you see what he knows, the difficult 2nd language he learned, the way he presents on camera for a good few years now, hear of his military experience, see the places he's been you cannot fail to appreciate the fact he shares this with us. I know I am practically gushing now but he's a huge asset to TFBTV and always a pleasure to watch. When life is often full of a lot of shit, it's great to see a guy being a great guy and a multi-talented one at that.

I enjoy your 'in country' docs. Just an FYI: As you are someone who states they want to use correct pronunciations of foreign words, check out that the Russian pistol maker's surname Макаров is pronounced "muh-KAR-uhv" as in the"Makarov" pistol. It is always pronounced with stress on the second syllable. If it is to be pronounced correctly in English, it is pronounced "muh-KAR-uhv". This is a very common mistake all over the KZfaq English speaking firearm world!

I've been really enjoying these videos Miles it has made me appreciate how good we have here in the United States. Also a thought; You said its pretty much a given that everyone carries condition 3 and you noted that you see Afghan policemen with M16A4s set on fire all the time this is probably because they have the hammer at rest on an empty chamber and on AR-15s and M16s with standard fire control groups you cannot engage the safety when the hammer is decocked where as with an AK you can engage the safety when the hammer is at rest on an empty chamber so that's probably why you see more AKs with the safety engaged and some guys probably just leave it off because they don't want to remember to take the safety off when they go to chamber a round in their AK since if they are carrying it condition 3 they would need to disengage the safety on the AK before they can chamber a round. Honestly with the complete lack of training, education, and the quality of the guns they are working with it really isn't that surprising that all guns are condition 3.

Loved the video man. I think information about everyday gun laws abroad is a almost untapped content vein for firearm enthusiasts. Anytime I can get a first hand look in how the gun culture is observed and even the processes to acquire pistol permits in other countries totally peaks my interest. And especially in the more unacceptable locals where it's harder to get a unbiased outlook. Def could be a innovative series idea That a lot of people in our industry would get behind and live to see. Thanks for outing out content with actual substance it's invaluable in this day and age and I'm excited to see what's next.

What do you call it if I carry with 99% PAVA round in the chamber, safety off, hammer usually cocked, zipped into a small bag pocket on my right side with the magazine loaded and in my left pant or coat pocket? I call it carrying the weapon unloaded in a closed and fastened container, but ready if I need it and can maintain cover for 4 seconds... In the home things are much simpler, I can carry it fully loaded, decocked but not on safety in my right pant pocket with birdshot load in the chamber, 4 lead hollow points then 2 hardened and polished steel balls or pointed and lubed hot-rolled steel bullets in the magazine.

I know you probably don't want to hear this but the NRA has been a instructor for many many years in the United States in the safe use of firearms for anyone that wants to learn. We have a very high level of firearm safety and quality of weapons available because of them raising the bar.

9:10 interesting. I had similar experiences with kids and huge mover trucks with 70m3 containers when I worked as a mover in refugee centers in the netherlands.

This was really informative. I had never really understood the manner in which small arms are carried and used by Afghan military/police. I guess it makes sense to see they just simply have not been educated on how the weapons are carried/used/maintained and that is how you end up with a keychain on your rear-sight.
