The Perfect Cut Lawn Care

In this video I look at the two different grass types that I grow in my yard. My back yard has Perennial Ryegrass while my front yard has Kentucky Bluegrass. We look at the differences between texture, color, striping, growth patterns, germination, and disease.

Absolutely a KZfaqr after my own heart. I was gonna over seed 5 iron p.r.g. over my kgb. Love the blue grass. Scotts and midnight mix. Looks good but even after 1.5 years still spotty. Like to have the best of both worlds. Just figured in 2 years I'd over seed with midnight again. Love this vid. Dude

I killed off part of my lawn and went with 100% KBG, it germinated so slow it allowed other weeds to germinate right along with it. So, I hope the 'elite' seed I used will out compete it eventually. KBG can be aggressive, but it's like watching paint dry.

You do it this spring? It’s slow for sure. Mesotrione/tenacity/ l Scott’s starter fertilizer helps, and then after 6 weeks or so you can spray out the weeds. Good luck, let me if you have any questions.

I love perennial ryegrass for so many reasons and one big one is how well it stripes like you said. I live in vancouver, BC and it seems to really thrive here with our widely variable climate and lots of rain. Yes it doesn't have rhizomes like KBG but it doesn't need them with how quickly it germinates and establishes which makes overseeding ridiculously easy while still producing incredible results. Mow it tall in the summer and it's also decently heat and drought resistent and can be kept up with hand watering. One issue I have though which seems to be the opposite of your problem is mine is too thick with how often I overseed and it almost ends up choking itself off, I have to dethatch a couple times a year.

Again your lawn looks amazing as always. I noticed at the beginning of the clip you have the same issue as me when cutting across the grain. It pulls the Swardman in different directions making it hard keeping the stripes straight. That’s the only down side I think of the Swardman being so light.

Beautiful lawn!! What variety of Kentucky Bluegrass did you use on your front lawn? I was disappointed with my front lawn renovation last fall. I used a premium seed 50% Kentucky Blue 50% perennial rye. And after 7 weeks I am still trying to get rid of all the perennial rye seed stalks and stems. It gives my lawn a brown cast. Next month I would like to overseed with Kentucky Blue seed with the darkest color I can find.

Did you plant that rye for the future of a outting green? Also do you know if Kentucky blue would be good for a putting green and top dressing it or will the sand interfere with the grass growing and suffocate it? I have a entire back yard of new construction so I have to start ground up. Any suggestions. Your videos are easy to watch straight to the point I like them.
@theperfectcutlawncare
@theperfectcutlawncare 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I didn’t plant the rye for a future putting green. Fortunately it can handle a low cut, and is used for overseeding greens during the winter AZ. Kentubluegrass won’t tolerate cutting the low height of a green; however there are some varieties that can be used. I’m not sure where you are, but I think the bluegrass blend SS1100 from seed super store is beautiful and does well. I wouldn’t recommend rye as a stand alone.

It took about a week to germinate. I did a spring seeding. Right after it germinated it survived a tornado warning and then 3 nights in the 20’s and 4 inches of snow and survived. I live in northern Illinois. Not quite as warm as where you are. You’re in a tough spot in the summer. To keep it alive and have a quick bounce back when temps cool down I irrigate an inch of water a week if there’s no rain. I also let it grow out to an inch and half. During spring and fall I keep it at .75 inches. I seeded mine mid to late August looking for a spot with no rain forecast to prevent a wash out. I kept it moist by watering it every hour with a timer for 15 minutes. It was decently established by early November. And really filled in by the next June. Stuff is great and I enjoy it, but it takes some patience.

Keep the grass cut as high as you can. I do 3+ inches and it does just fine. We all love the look of short grass, but short grass equals shallow roots, and shallow roots means less tolerance for heat, shade and drought with most of the cool season turf varieties.

@@mattb9664 I have used a couple of different suppliers, one RPR was slightly darker than the other. RPR needs a fair amount of fertiliser when it’s growing and that helps it maintain a dark green color but whilst it can tolerate warm weather it loses that dark Color when the ground temp warms up in summer.

It’s a good option. With short cut grass some people have had some issues with the growth pattern of each. The blade will lay flat and you’ll get long running shoots

New to the grass game. Live in the Pacific Northwest. Does Scott’s make a PRG and KBG mix? Or is everyone just mixing seeds by hand in their spreaders ? Great channel. Keep it coming.

Scott’s doesn’t have a mix of KBG and Rye grass. I would look at seed superstore. You can make your own mix, and they’d be happy to help you come up with one. They are fairly priced with excellent seed.

I live in Spokane, but came from the West side, which is perennial ryegrass, that is lush and green 24/7. Spokane gets super hot, super cold, and pretty darned arid. Having a lawn here is a pretty expensive and high-maintenance joke, as this area only has a few native bunch grasses that are somewhat green 1 month a year. What the HECK kind of TURF do I even PLANT here, man??? Floppers tore out the landscape and tossed down ryegrass. Needless to say, 3/4 my entire lot is DEAD and re-WEEDED. What the HECK do I plant in Spokane??? Rather have nice lawn in summer-ALL species go dormant here for winter. I am at a complete loss. I AM gradually putting BACK darned shrubs since I face South-Freezes, dries and fries.

Spokane is certainly Arid. You’re in a tough spot. Most drought Tolerant of the cool season grasses is Tall Fescue. That might be your best bet in trying to survive summer heat. It’ll still require water, but not as much as bluegrass or Ryegrass. Good luck, glad I do t have your climate

Well, niether, as long as you are buying certified seed. Poa will germinate from seed. If you have it you’ll need a pre emergent in the spring and another application of pre emergent in the fall.

Which type is more drought resistant, Kentucky Bluegrass or Perennial Rye?
@theperfectcutlawncare
@theperfectcutlawncare 2 жыл бұрын
Bluegrass will go dormant faster, but will bounce right back quicker and stronger than rye grass when cooler wetter weather shows up. Rye may die and not comeback with with many days in the 90’s and no rain. Older cultivars of bluegrass are more tolerant to drought because they were not bred as high maintenance turf. So the best bet with low maintenance grass would be older cultivars of bluegrass. However, Fescue might be best if not planning on any watering.

I do about 2 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sq feet spread through out the year using organic fertilizer like Milorganite. I go lighter in the spring and heavy in the fall. I also do a synthetic in the fall. Biggest issue with rye grass is disease and pythium blight. And I have to apply mefenoxam every 14 days in the spring and summer. Hope that helps.
