Good news! The best way to play Perfect Dark Zero is finally here! A simple setting change will fix the loading screens and cutscenes in this game, finally making it fully playable start to finish without any big issues. On top of that, Xenia is capable of running the game at 60+FPS, meaning it'll be way more responsive and smooth than playing it on Rare Replay or an original Xbox 360. You can also play the unpatched version to restore all the music in the game as it's meant to be playaed.
How to:
1.- Get Xenia Canary: github.com/xenia-canary/xenia...
2.- Get Xenia Patches, read instructions in the link itself and enable the 60 FPS patch in the Perfect Dark Zero file: github.com/xenia-canary/game-...
3.- Open 'xenia-canary.config.toml' with a text editor and set the following:
- use_dedicated_xma_thread = false
- framerate_limit = 60
- vsync = false
4.- Launch the game and have fun!

I left a short how-to in the description. This way you can enjoy the game as it's meant to be played, with all its music in place and also improve the experience at 60FPS with no input delay. The game plays like a dream on this! Also sorry for the low audio, didn't notice until it was published, that's on me.

Glad to see you spreading the word after I figured out how to fix the music bug. I am running the Platinum Hits version (AKA REV1), which works perfect with the framerate patch (has it's own version) and the music fix. I believe that one comes with all the patches installed too.

Thank you for finding the fix!!! I don't recommend using Platinum Hits though, you want to play the unpatched version ideally. The 2006 patch broke the music scripts in singleplayer so many levels go silent!

@@Graslu00 Have tno had that issue at all after making the "dedicated xma" sound change. But I'll keep my ears pealed. Where it that most noticeable so I can test it? Actually, I am not 100% sure it is the Plat Hits version. It's labelled "Rev 1", so I guessed it was. But if it's missing music I'll get the other version! EDIT: Turns out I have spent so many years playing the updated version I had forgotten all the music that was missing! I'm SHOCKED! I wish I knew this sooner! I have been playing the bugged version for over 15 year!!! MIND BLOWN!

Played PDZ so much when the Xbox 360 launched. Infected was my favourite game type. One if the funniest moments I remember was using the alt-fire on the revolver to give the skeleton players a false position on the radar. I had the entire lobby running back and forth on the dessert map. XD Imagine this emulator version got a fov and mouse injector hack. I think it would transform the way this game plays and feels.

And now the XBLA Perfect Dark runs nicely on Xenia as well, a patch was recently made so that the graphical glitch doesn't happen for those with NVIDIA GPUs.

Yeah but there are other issues still. No fog, darkness doesn't work, some transparency is broken and light flares go through everything including map geometry.

I remember this game. It may not have been the best compared to its N64 predecessor, but it was still entertaining. I’m glad I’m not the only one who liked to mess around the first level with overpowered weapons 😂

Does the FarSight appear in this game? Maybe not in single player due to it being a Mian gun and this is a prequel but does it appear in lets say multiplayer?

No, but you have the Shockwave Rifle which functions similarly with X-Ray alt fire and it can shoot through the world.

the last time i got it to run at 60fps+, i couldn't even get past mission zero (the beginning part) on my pc - it crashes. playing in 60fps+ does make the looking/ads sensitivity much better than the original's frame rate (30fps), but still feel the same but well you know. hopefully the reboot would have a more modern 1st person's looking/ads sensitivity.

It seems to take notes more from the more modern Deus Ex games than any perfect dark game. Which might not be a bad thing but doesn't seem like perfect dark exactly.

@@mrmunkee I think the new game looks very Perfect Dark. The series has always been very cyberpunk in style and tone and it just seems like a natural progression of what Rare intended but couldn't achieve on an N64 cartridge.

But coming from that teaser, it will most likely be a carbon copy of today's immersive sims through the juxtaposition of Rare's feat in game design. One thing I despise about modern gaming...is that its too damn slow! 😠💢 Saving grace; I'm glad Xenia and their rightful game titles are picking up momentum. 😊

@StillTheVoid The new Perfect Dark looks much faster than Perfect Dark Zero to me at least. Zero was kinda sluggish compared to Halo at the time, which makes me understand why Microsoft threw Perfect Dark out the window for several years, but it happens when you split a company into small teams without warning.

I get lost on step 2, I don't know which lines of text I need to edit I also no longer have a working xbox360, mine died with red ring so I cannot rip the game. And feels the patch only works for the USA version anyways, I remember playing this on Spanish, so, I believe, I have the PAL (European) Original disk of Perfect Dark Zero

Did you download the patches from step 2? In the patches folder you'll find one for Perfect Dark Zero which you can edit to enable them as instructed. As for the game, you can easily find it in places like the internet archive.

@@Graslu00 I did download the patches, but I get lost in the inmense amount of code it has. I also read USA around, so feels not much worth to work that hard on this. If I cannot, more or less, get the same experience I had back then, doesn't feel worth the effort and risk

No hay riesgo alguno, puedes encontrar la copia americana en archive.org fácilmente. Después el único código que tienes que cambiar para activar el parche es donde pone 60FPS - is_active = true o algo así y listo. Para el resto dentro del toml, pulsa CTRL + B para buscar si tu Windows es Español y pones lo que hay en la descripción por ejemplo "vsync" y lo cambias a false, "framerate" y lo pones a 60, etc... Si no quieres 60FPS, lo único que necesitarás será arreglar el audio y ya y entonces puedes usar la copia española igualmente.

@@Graslu00 El idioma en que me lo digas da igual. Sigo sin entender donde ves lo fácil. En archive no veo donde conseguirlo. Aunque consiga modificar el parche de nada me va a valer. Recuerdo que el juego tenia voces en castellano, una pena que mi xbox360 esté muerta y no pueda conseguir otra. Porque esta alternativa no me convence.

Also, if you have a decent enough system, you can set the resolution to 4K with - draw_resolution_scale_x=2 draw_resolution_scale_y=2

Raising the internal resolution causes flickering in this game so I don't recommend it yet.

@@Graslu00 Just some stuttering every time a door opens. My guess is it's just the shaders' caching, so if I play enough, it'll probably fix. Other typical emulator stuff like audio glitches, but I see them on this video too, so that's just xenia.

It's actually the other way around, it was well received at the start and slowly became hated. But I found this is mostly only within the PD community. Game is legit good, just not comparable to the original.

Here's hoping this level of emulation quality is also possible with AMD GPUs, if not, maybe one day. Us AMD users gotta trive too, not just NVIDIA users just because they're the majority.

Aesthetically this game is amazing, very 2000's. I really didn't enjoy this game when it first came out however, it felt like such a downgrade compared to the original. In my opinion, looking back on it, I think it's safe to say this is an okay FPS game but a bad Perfect Dark game.

Holy hell you must have one hell of a super computer. I got a 3080 and 32 gigs of ram and nope, even with your instructions... simply not enough to do what achieved in video. Its so stuttery/slow/choppy.

If you use ROV, which you should to avoid some graphical issues, the stutters should disappear after a bit when all the shaders load. I'm on a i9-13900KF and, RTX 4090 and 32GB of RAM as well so that's definitely a factor too, but seeing how it runs at 30-45FPS on the Steam Deck I think it should be fine?

@@Graslu00 I found the issue was a mixture of a typo I made in one of the lines in Xenia config, and I was using the wrong patch for the version of PDZ I had. I don't know what revision my Disc is, so I wound up just downloading all of the patches and enabling them all. It now runs pretty good.

@@HyperDarkmoon Honestly, we have hardly seen anything yet of the new one. One gadget barely explained and a single gun for example with no details on alternate fire or anything. Probably still too early on for a real view of it. We shall see when it is more fleshed out. No real details yet on much of anything. Hoping, but pessimistic.

It's definitely possible with other guns but Dark Agent is brutal and you have to abuse the OP weapons. Perfect Agent is perfectly fine with most guns just like the original.

This game is even worse than i remember. Was such a disappointment. And judging by the trailer of the upcoming PD, i'm not too optimistic about that one either, but we'll see when the game finally drops.

The new gameplay reveal makes me cautiously fascinated, given how much development trouble the game has reportedly had. I was expecting it to be a dumpster fire, and it still has the chance to be, but we'll see. I just wish that both the new PD and PD:Z didn't just completely discard the world and artstyle that the N64 original built, they feel like they take place in completely different universes and may as well be completely different IPs.

@@AlienGenotype I played it at release in 2005 and enjoyed the co-op and multiplayer A LOT. It's not close to GE or PD, but it's also not the same game - I don't compare them, they play differently while following the same mission formula which is what I love about it. Movement depends on the weapon you carried and you could run with your hands out, you can play it your way with whatever weapon thanks to the loadout system before every level. The only difficulty that I find less fun is Dark Agent like in this video because you really have to abuse the Plasma / Sword combo.
