How to relieve twist and maintain tension using an inkle loom while tablet weaving.
If you are having a problem dealing with twist on an on an inkle or peg loom then this should help. It will allow you to remove the twist using fishings swivels and retention your warp using a taunt-line hitch.
I'm using barrel swivels size, I think as it's been years since I bought them, size #4 or 25mm.

I just started tablet weaving on an inkle loom and this is a fantastic idea! Going to have to go buy swivels and key rings now before I warp up for my next project; it's an all forward pattern, so I know the twist will get unbearable.

Excellent explanatory video. I was able to adapt the technique to an Inkle band that I am weaving. I didn’t need to worry about twist so didn’t use key ring or swivel. I needed to add a length of fine silk thread to one of my warp threads that was in the middle of the warp. I created a loop in the side near the beginning of the weaving and created the knot with the other end of that warp thread. I was a bit worried that the slippery thread would not hold firm, but I was able to get the Correct tension and it is holding steady! Thank you. Peace. D Taylor, DVM

This is a fantastic video, thank you so much for showing your method! What do you do for very long bands? I find that once I go above a few meters, I don't know how to "store" the excess. Would you put your swivels closer to your work or at the very end? I am entirely lost :)
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm glad you liked it. I'm not sure what you mean by "store". The loom in the video can handle up to 12ft and I just push the twist out every once in a while. The swivels are attached to the beginning and the end of the warp. Does that help?

@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! I have done inkle weaving and yes you could do this but I think it is too much work for it to be worth it. Inkle is 1 thread at a time and can be continuously warped. With tablet weaving, some patterns cant be continuously warped and so that's why I came up with this method.

Excess twist is quite a nuisance and this seems like a great idea. I am wondering how you prevent a snarled mess from happening with the long ends of the adjustable knot? As the twist builds up and the threads turn so will the long ends. Also wondering if you find the knots slip and loosen as you work? Maybe I am not making the knot tight enough.
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, snarls can happen but I try and make the tails as short as possible or cut off excess to reduce tangles. As for the knot slipping, if you tie it tight enough I don't find it slips. The friction of the threads is usually enough to keep it from loosening.
@lindasturm599
@lindasturm599 3 жыл бұрын
Good video, twists make it so difficult. It appears you're using an Inkle loom, so the warp has to be continuous, correct? The rings and spinners must travel as advancing? Figuring out warping process is a little difficult to picture.
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, its a circle with the beginning and end attaching to the key ring/swivels. Otherwise you just follow your normal path for your inkle loom.

Hi, before buying swivels watch my video comparing ball barring vs barrel swivels. Ball barring swivels make quite a difference compared to the ones in this video. I buy on Amazon. You can also check your local fishing suppy shop or Walmart to see if they have swivels.

I used standard 1 inch keyrings, but you don't have to use the rings. For me they're just a convenience for holding the thread while I tie the knot. But you can do just the swivels by themselves.

If you loosen your tension before advancing then the rings just slid right over, no issues.

I know that this video was posted at least four years ago, but, I just came across it. I bought a new Schacht inkle loom recently and I would like to use your keyring-and-swivel method of eliminating twist. However, I am concerned about the metal damaging the pegs of my new loom. Has this been something that you have experienced? Anyone? I am ready to warp my loom. Should I only use swivels?
@tomthedespoiler
@tomthedespoiler 8 ай бұрын
This reply is 4 months after this question, just to keep the timeline intact. I also use a Schact inkle loom, and when I do card weaving it is very easy to advance the warp so that the swivels and keyrings (I actually use jewelry clasps so I can also unclip each card if needed) are never actually in contact with the pegs. Advance the whole warp until just before the metal gets to the peg, weave as much as you can, and make sure you don't advance the warp again until you are able to pass the metal bits past the peg and still have your next pick in the working area. It takes some practice, and with the Schact style inkle looms having their tensioner placed so that the working area shrinks as you weave, it sometimes gets really frustrating. I have ripped cards while turning because I didn't keep my swivels lined up when I started, so I had a much longer area I didn't want on a peg, which dramatically shortened the working area as well. Band weaving is cool, tablets are cool, go do some weaving.

HI, I noticed that you have 4 swivels per key ring. Why 4 instead of 3 or 5? Thanks!
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 5 жыл бұрын
The reason I do for is just that I found that to be the optimal number. Most patterns have an even number of cards and so 4 feels like the right amount. Also when removing the twist the more swivels per ring and the harder it gets to separate them from each other to allow them to spin. So after much experimentation 4 is a good number.

I wanna say the keyring is 3/4 inch but I have no idea what the swivel size is. Sorry! I bought the swivels and rings so long ago. I would just go to a sporting good store and see what size looks right to you. Walmart also sells fishing supplies. Also be sure to check out my swivel video as there are 2 types: barrel and ball barring. I recommend the ball barring kind.
