In this video, I show you the difference between barrel swivels and ball bearing swivels and how that affects relieving twist while tablet weaving.
The ball bearing swivels I got on Amazon and are size 1. I would go larger if you can as they just bearly are big enough for me to get a size 5 crochet hook through. They were $8.99 us for a pack of 25
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
The barrel swivels I got years ago from Cabela's and I believe are a size 4. On Amazon you can get 200 for $9.99 us

I was SO frustrated with the twist on a pattern I’m weaving - I’m a new weaver, and couldn’t figure out how to get the warp untwisted so I could weave. I ran across this video, and I have to tell you - you are a GENIUS. I bought a pack of ball-bearing swivels and installed them and VOILA! It works! Thank you so much for posting this video. I truly appreciate learning this technique to keep me from major stressing!

I'm accidentally using ballbearing swivels and did not even know the other's weren't so good. Great news. I get mine from Aliexpress. (Amazon not available in my country). very cheap. Thanks for making the video

OF COURSE I just bought a bunch of barrel swivels! I know I can use them, but obviously the ball bearing ones are waaaay better!

It was my lucky day yesterday. After watching your video I went in search of ball bearing swivels. Of course they are extremely expensive here in Australia...anywhere from $10 - $13/pack of 3’s 😫 Persistence paid off when I found a local shop and one of their product line suppliers had gone out of business (hope not because of the pandemic 😔) with all the ball bearing swivels reduced to only $2/pack. Oh happy days 💃💃💃 I bought their entire inventory of sizes 1, 2 and 3. Still on the hunt for more as I only got enough for 28 tablets. But it’s a great start 😀 Question: do all yarns twist in every project? I heard you say you’d use the ball bearing swivels for the borders...what about the rest of the project yarns? Enquiring as I’m not sure how many more to purchase.

That sounds like a steal of a deal! I do use the swivels on all borders and any card I feel will generate a lot of twist. Some patterns are twist neutral, like 4F4B. Some times they are neutral if they look mirrored, meaning the pattern reverses at some point. I sometimes still use the swivels just because I'm also doing the taunt-line hitch knot and it is just easier to attach to the swivel. So it is really up to you. If you are unsure of the amount of twist then just use 1 swivel per card. Hope this helps!

@@KnowKnots yes it does help, thank you. I've also learned more now and realise I have enough swivels for 76 cards. When I first posted I thought every yarn needed a swivel (4 x 1 card). Now I know it's only one per card.

Thank you! But I don't actually have a picture of the full set up. I think the closest I have is in my GTT videos or the most likely in Perfect Tension video.

Thanks for your video! I’m using barrels and I had the same difficulty as you. I’ve been looking for ball bearings but I’m not sure about the size. #7 is 10mm is ok ? ( I use the same ring as you. ) What’s the best place to buy them? I’m also thinking about a small portable loom to work with. Yours looks very flexible. Could you talk about the important characteristics for choosing one? Thanks. Wanda

I have size 1, used in the video and size 4 which I found to be large. So size 7 I would think would be way to big. I added Amazon links in the description where I ordered my swivels. My loom is actually quite large, 12 ft warp and is diy. I have since bought and Accordion Loom from Windhaven Looms and Fiber Arts on Etsy. It's double-sided and very sturdy. I may do another video on looms but for now I'd say that Schacht and Ashford are popular looms and Windhaven has a devout following.

A very helpful video! What size swivels do you prefer?
@KnowKnots

I use size 1 in the video, little on the small side especially if you use think yarn. I have since gotten size 4. 4s seem extra large so I'm gonna say go with 2 or 3.

Are they also helpful when threads of multiple cards get twisted up together?
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 3 жыл бұрын
When multiple threads from different cards get twisted together I am usually de-tangling them as I remove the twist from 1 card. So in the removal they all get untwisted. Does that make sense?

Hi! How would you start off with swivels if I wanted to only rotate my cards upwards through a pattern?
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 10 ай бұрын
If you only wanted to turn in one direction you would still attach the swivels the same and just remove the twist more often

My experience with barrel swivels is that they spin great when tension is lightened
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 3 жыл бұрын
I've had that experience too, but, I still find the ball bearing to spin easier with or without tension.

Do you need to do anything special to get the swivels around the pegs without scratching the pegs as you advance the warp?
@KnowKnots
@KnowKnots 5 жыл бұрын
If you're worried about scratching your pegs you can loosen the warp, pull the swivels over and then re-tighten. I personally don't worry too much about it.

I believe these are 1 inch in diameter, but its really up to you. Just know the bigger you use the more unwieldy they will be.
