You'd think it is easy to create a smaller version of a shape in Illustrator - but if the shape isn't a regular one, dragging to make it smaller doesn't work! Here is a simple workaround that lets you create a smaller size of any shape so you can stack them one on top of the other and they fit perfectly.

Once again, after no success in finding a proper tutorial on a matter I was struggling with, I found the right information on your channel.🥰I was trying to scale a copy of a rectangle, with two rounded corners, by resizing it with SHIFT+ALT and then I was noticed the two shapes weren't matching. I guess this only works with circles or squares. Thank you so much, Helen, for being such a great teacher and for creating this channel. I am so grateful, as many others, I'm sure. 🤗

You are so right. As soon as your shape is even a bit off being a rectangle or circle or triangle, it all goes pear shape. It's great to hear this video helped!

Colin Mulcahy I am so glad you found this Colin, it's not a process most people need but if you do need to scale shapes then you run into trouble really quickly when you realise that they don't scale by just resizing!

I love Hellen's tutorial, but wanted to interject a much easier and less confusing way to do this "UNIFORM RESIZE" Control F makes a copy on top and Alt and Shift gives you a uniform size you can control. Can also use the Object > Path > offset path feature.

Thanks for your feedback Cara! Unfortunately, if you watch the first part of this video you will see very clearly why Alt + Shift and resize DOES NOT WORK to make a smaller 'nested' shape. I show very clearly that this fails and does so pretty spectacularly. It might work on a circle or a square but it will fail on a complex shape. However, Offset path does work and I have already made a video on this feature. It is in the list and scheduled to be released on December 6, so keep a lookout for it then. Thank you, Helen! Despite the existence of offset path, this is still a useful way to explore the use of strokes in various ways. Also, I learned a that Illustrator brings the stroke inside the shape by just reducing the size of the shape. By the way, I love the symmetrical shape you have for the thumbnail of this video, and i tried to create a similar shape. But the way I made my shape was inaccurate and cumbersome. Do you have a video tutorial on how to make a shape with 4 symmetrical sides?

I've been able to get this to work for simple shapes. However, I have a shape with multiple paths, and I'm not having any luck getting it to scale down properly. Do you have any suggestions @Helen Bradley - thank you.

Hi there, great question. I've just had a play around for you and I think this might work: First, obviously save your file in case all this goes south! Select the objects that make your shape and choose Object > Path >Offset path and set the offset to a negative value - this should make an additional set of shapes smaller than the original. Try it and let me know how you go? If you still have problems I might need to see the file to see how this might be achieved... but hopefully this will work for you.

@@HelenBradley at 7:10 when you turn stroke off and drag the shape out of the group, when I turn the stroke off, i the inner shape instantly pops back to the original size as soon as I turn the stroke off :/ I'm not sure why I'm having so much trouble with this. sorry. I just keep coming back to your video because I know I'm doing something wrong. :/

i used this technique to go from a smaller shape to a larger one, worked the same in reverse. and here i've been beating my head against a wall for hours now, haha. thank you!!!!

Why don't you use Object > path > offset path... ? What's the difference?

Morgan Field Ha! perhaps you are right! I confronted this issue once when I was making paisley shapes for another video - I didn't realize what the problem was but I just filed it away and one day I saw someone do something and I thought wow! that's what the problem really is and that's the solution. I actually love solving problems so Illustrator is a good application for that - lots of problems needing solutions! It does keep me on my toes!

we cold have just used the scale button too. I did it just by scaling it.

+Ella Marie Ella, the Scale tool works on some objects but not on all of them. As soon as you make something that isn't regular in shape the Scale tool just doesn't scale in proportion. The only way to successfully scale any object any time is this method. That said, if you're happy with using the Scale tool and if it works for your shapes - then obviously use it. This video is for people who have a shape that doesn't scale correctly with that tool - they need to use this method - that's why I made this video.
