Your winrate at the poker table varies from hand to hand. High stakes poker pro Phil Galfond has advice on how to keep your edge high (and strategy to analyze if you still have an edge!)
🧠 If you want to realize your full poker potential, I can't recommend this course by my mental game coach Elliot Roe enough: ➡️ galfond.link/ElliotCourse
***
“You are not a favorite at the poker table.
You are not an underdog.
This is true because we haven’t given you a lineup of opponents yet, but also because you are not always the you that you are right now.”
Poker is not a game of static skill edges.
On any given day you or your opponents' performance abilities at the poker table are not the same as they were the other days, and it’s often mostly out of your control.
There are things within your control that can affect how well you perform, but most often your attributes like Logic, Discipline, Knowledge Recall, Focus, Problem Solving Ability, and Empathy will fade as the poker session goes on.
Accepting this reality frees you from needing to perform to a specific standard for yourself at all times - it’s pretty hard to think at a high level 12 hours into a poker session and putting that pressure of ‘needing to’ onto yourself can make it even more difficult.
There are things you can do that might boost your endurance at the poker table and ability to maintain your poker skills.
Things like regularly getting a good night's sleep, eating better foods, exercising, and meditating can all increase your ability to maintain your key poker skills at the table for longer.
On the opposite end of learning to play within your attributes, learning to quit a poker session when your poker skills naturally fade can increase your win-rate more than trying a new aggressive poker strategy.
That’s because no matter how much mental game work you do pre-session, or how much stretching you do on your break, you’re always going to eventually get tired if you’re playing a long poker session.
This is why making a plan while you’re clear headed for when you’re going to quit is one of the key important concepts Phil stresses in this video.
It might sound counter-productive but learning when to quit and making good quits at the poker table can easily boost your win-rate in the long term.
By playing less C and D skill level poker sessions your overall average win-rate will start increasing even though your hours spent playing poker might go down in the short term.
There’s almost always a new poker game tomorrow, you don’t have to stay in a bad game just because you have a seat.
Are you a new poker player or a poker beginner?
Do you just need the best Texas Hold'em poker strategy and best Pot Limit Omaha poker tips, or do you have a high stakes poker related question you’d like a poker professional’s advice on?
Leave a comment and your question might end up in the next one of Phil’s quick poker tips videos!
Remember to Subscribe for more high stakes poker content and turn on notifications so you don't miss any Galfond Challenge livestreams or other poker live streams!

Phil's AMA on Two Plus Two changed the way I looked at poker and myself as a poker player, SO enjoying that he's taken to teaching "full time". He's the best at explaining the nuts and bolts strategy in an easily digestible way, but he's the ONLY one who touches on the meta beyond the math and cards themselves, another brilliant bit of insights from Phil. Thank you!

Such good advice. I swear, every time I'm having some kind of existential crisis as an online poker player I watch one of your videos like this and just have some truth hammered home. It's uncanny. Though maybe not really, as you've experienced so much more than me as a nearly two decade pro LOL. At any rate, just wanted to say this video hit home hard for me. I'm in the midst of a big downswing, a combination of variance and bad decisions. But I've learned from your content and elsewhere to have a bankroll to withstand such downswings. And having these kinds of lessons reiterated has been super helpful to me, and it's continued to help me grow my bankroll and keep moving up in stakes in spite of all the adversity. Keep doling out these helpful videos, micro/low stakes grinders like me are gaining a lot from your wisdom!

Phil, 1. (Needless to say) your this and other segments overall are very helpful and informative; (a) the reframing of power/edge attributes and how they dynamically change over time or during intra-session (b) default and trigger rules are excellent and timely for me and others. (2) Timely example : yesterday I lost my stack due to me ignoring those default and trigger rules and ignoring my decreased ratings of those “attributes elements “ So I got involved in a hand where I made a series of fundamental and thus cascading bunch of mistakes even though I had fair enough of an ace/q offsuit hand : (a) played out of position (b) did not challenge the opponent Preflop even though I knew he had less than a marginal hand (c) was impatient and tired and ignoring I was slightly fatigued combined with being card dead the last few hours (d) ignoring a basic rule to then stack off only with top pair and top kicker on a dangerous board on the flop when I was more than 150 blinds deep (I shoved). Opponent flopped two pair 9/7 suited. [3] hours earlier while I was bright, focused and fresh, I stacked 2 people due to me being in position- opponent 1 flopped 7/5 flush, opponent 2 flopped two pair (and he ignored the monotone flush flop) while I called in position with the flopped nut flush (fresh , focused and with my computer gaming reframing attributes at about 9/10 level)

The "poker player as a game character" is a great way to conceptualize the dynamic state of anyone's game. From now on I'm a Red Wizard, practicing white magic (sound theory-based play), black magic (exploits), and combat (live reads). Player stats, XP, buffs ... all fit right in with managing my game in the moment. Fortunately, live tournaments somewhat level the effects of mental/physical exhaustion and length of session related impacts on everyone's quality of play, although some players will suffer more decline than others. The downside is that they do not do facilitate impromptu breaks, so learning to play through without punting once a trigger has been identified is a key skill.

I started to improve a great deal in poker when I went on the days where I could "take it or leave it." I was much more relaxed. Wanting to go play...and really can't waiting to go play...is really a negative for me. I'm to impatient on these days. Same with drinking an energy drink. Another no for me. I don't want to be in the mindset where I am "ready to play (gamble)" because I end up trying to make things happen more than I should versus just being okay with whatever the day brings. The best time for me to play poker is when Im really bored and just happy to be out of the house...and I'm okay if the game or my cards ends up coming my way slowly. I'm not a great poker player...but I have turned into a winning poker player. And I have no intentions of quitting my real job.

Phil, any words to a man that just seems to run bad over and over in this game? I try to enter every tournament with a positive mind set, live and online but when the same crap keeps showing up, either losing those flips being ahead or just seeing the same suck outs time and time again, it's to the point where I'm calling out what's gonna come. It's been like this all year, is it really possible to be this unlucky at something. I know we all have bad beat stories, these aren't really bad beat stories just a bad batch of being unlucky I guess time and time again, my girl says then quit playing but it's an addiction playing. It's a sad time.
