What a joy it is to hear a top player who not only possesses immense knowledge about the game, but also has the ability to convey some of that knowledge to the listener in a manner that the listener can readily understand. Top players usually aren't great "teachers", for a variety of understandable reasons...and it's a real pleasure to hear someone whose personality and eloquence match his immense talent. The amount of Chip Reese esque "deep knowledge" and nuance in your decision making process is off the charts fascinating. With all the sophisticated game theory and analytics in poker now, there is one quotation from Texas "road scholar" Doyle Brunson that still to me is the North Star of guidance in planning the responses Pre and post flop. "The key to No-Limit is to put a man to a decision for all his chips." - Doyle Brunson, RIP, legendary Texas "road scholar." As a general guideline, I have found this rule to seriously consider just keeping the game in heads up to 6 person about pre flop and post flop, and trying if at all possible just to be all in by the second street if my "poker instincts" built over thousands of hands give the green light. With even a moderate of hitting the board on the flop, maybe holding a 10 7 and 10 4 6 os is the flop, and my "feel built over thousands of hands" is to just put the man to the test Doyle Brunson style, especially in 3 to 6 max poker tournaments, this plan an creates a tough decision in a tourney for opponent even if he holds AK AJ or maybe 62 on the wild side trying to be a "trapper." Of course, there are exceptions and I'm sure an expert on your level has a sophisticated counter to this "moment of grand decision" for all of one's chips. Crystallizes the decision making for me in the "fog of war" and I can see ol even how opponent has to take a long time in general to decide if he has "the gamble in him." Pot odds, pyschology, context all play are of course critical but the real test is that moment when a player has to respond to a direct challenge to his stack without all the signal from the whole board. Found this Brunson aggressive "instinct" mindset most helpful and extremely useful as a heuristic in short handed tournaments at least, but seems relevant to cash games as well where Doyle first started. Not sure about the relevance to modern big game cash clashes, but even then with millions at stake can you call a huge bet with just high cards or a draw to the flush if millions are on the line, still very very hard decision and an extreme challenge to the opponent. I play a lot of poker and I just discovered this channel, it's absolutely wonderful, thank you.

The things that go through my head during a hand is consistently. Strength of hand, how the action played around the table and what position am I in to the flop, pot odds, how many outs I have once the the flop betting starts and how likely it is I’ll improve on the turn or river. All while this is happening you need to calculate what ranges of hands your opponent can have and how they’re betting and how much they’re betting. That’s mainly it other than making reads based off an opponents history and play style

The theory explanation of continuing iwth 50% of the range with a pot sized bet was great... thanks for that reminder on how pot odds relates to ranges

For board texture & range advantage- Optimal play is only optimal if your opponent is playing Optimal play (GTO) otherwise, it’s completely subjected to exploit in itself. GTO assumes after all the exploitative plays, after all the counter defense plays, we’re simply left with one reigning strategy. Problem is- That strategy can fail you in tournament, or an 8 hour session, and the player will simply suggest “well I’m within the variance, it’s okay” So for the recreational player/semi pro player- the correct play is to exploit ur oops at 1/3$ etc bc most likely they’ll loose 5 buy-ins without even recognizing their mistake let alone be able to adjust. So sure keep playing GTO

I don't even realize I ask myself questions in poker hand. It kind of just processes through my brain fast all at once on what to do. I forgot how complex poker is and my mind has simplified it over the years where I can figure out the situation a lot faster. I guess I should be more patient with my opponents on their decisions cause this stuff processes in my brain automatically. I always think they are trying to play slow cause Tom Dwan is slow, but poker has a lot of thinking involved especially for newer players. I am starting to think a shot clock is not a good idea for recreational players anyways.

Does anyone know at 10:42 why opp. HAS to call with 50% of their range when facing the pot odds he mentions?

Awesome content once again Phil. Quick question: do you consider yourself better at NLHE or PLO? How do you approach your educational content knowing that the majority of your audience are NLHE players?

I think I c bet way too often as the preflop raiser. I’m trying to check it over more on boards that favor the callers range but my stats at like 60% c bet lol

Well, I'd like to first say that everything Phil mentions as the top 5 things he thinks in a hand is what I also think in a hand. I just wish I played like Phil and had the same results. My results are solid, but not legendary! :)

Board texture is soooo important. One of the coolest lessons I learned is there are spots, for example SBvBTN 3bp, where SB will have range bets and range checks (specifically for PLO but I'm sure this probably applies to NLHE as well)

Any maths shortcuts to work out geometrical bet sizing?

i m not that a good poker player but i think i m not hat bad to comparing anyone ine the world except Phil Galfond in my opninion. Of course it is due to i have some ablitity to understand some basic skills but never thought high level pros like Phil Galfond thinks these kind of things! Because it is very hard to implement all these things into the game!

In MTT's you also need to think about effective stack size AND when does the blinds go up? Too many people call off and then get short and then the blinds go up and you have 6bb now and no fold equity

Man my range was every single hand until everyone kept saying hand rang this and that. I think I am going back to every hand is my range. And gto is another trap like this the optimal play is so rarely the right play for complete domination. I know this sounds stupid but how often does a good and line up with a good spot like to have the worlds align is way harder. Like why the hell do I always get good hands in first position and shit when I am the dealer.

I think one principle that doesn't get stated enough is that knowing all the applicable concepts can at times seem to be counterintuitive and apparently conflict. So prioritizing the concepts optimally to game conditions is more important. 1. Vegas 2. The Fing Mirage 3.
