I see, this video is being recommended after Thunderfoot and Cody's lab did the taste test experiment with heavy water that eventually got published in a scientific journal last week. The result was that in humans, heavy water taste like 1% sugar water, while in rats, the rats were able to detect that heavy water is toxic to them and was able to discern heavy water from regular water even when bottles containing the water were randomly shuffled around.
@AttiliusRex
@AttiliusRex 3 жыл бұрын
they arent sure why the rats didnt drink the heavy water, but rats do have different taste buds, so thunderfoot argues its likely they might not have tasted it as sweet but something they dont like the rats getting sick from the heavy water and putting 1:1 together and not drinking from it was another theory thunderfoot mentioned
@Yotanido
@Yotanido 3 жыл бұрын
@@AttiliusRex Initially, the rats showed no preference, so I doubt it tastes bad to them. Considering the low body weight of rats, it is quite possible the amounts of heavy water they drank had an effect on their health. So they avoided the different-tasting water. Makes sense to me.
@garygarypov5060

I just finished doing a set of experiences at UVA on type 2 diabetes and they had me drink heavy water. They would give me a small cup with what looked like 2 oz of the stuff and tell me to slowly sip it. To take about 20 to 30 minutes to drink the 2 oz. and then after an hour they gave me another one for a total of three times or 6 oz. The affect was like drunkenness except it did seem to effect my thought process like alcohol does but I for sure would not be able to pass a drunk test. I had a hard time standing still or walking without holding onto something for balance. They said that they could monitor the glucose in my system with the stuff, they drew lots of blood and added saline to me... and it didn't seem to taste any different that reg water to me.

There are seven isotopes of hydrogen the first three being Protium Deuterium and Tritium. The first two are stable isotopes and tritium is unstable and it’s the first of five radioactive isotopes of hydrogen. Protium is the most common form of hydrogen and just has a proton in its nucleus with a single electron in its shell. deuterium has a proton and a neutron and is known as heavy hydrogen, tritium the last of the natural forms of hydrogen has a proton and two neutrons. When deuterium is mixed with oxygen it forms what’s called heavy water. You certainly would not want to drink tritiated water

Drinking a glass of heavy water normally is just like drinking ordinary water. Unless you drink it fast when you are really thirsty you might briefly feel thirstier as it pulls normal water out of your throat tissues faster than it diffuses in. Rats can distinguish it and will avoid it if they have access to normal water. Drinking a glass or so a day isn't harmful but if you start drinking it by the gallon bad things will happen. Nothing much happens until you reach about 20% replacement. Heavy water in high concentrations directly inhibits cell division by stopping meiosis.. First, you stop producing ova and sperm cells and become sterile. At 25%+ you get gastrointestinal inflammation and hair loss. At 30% replacement, your bone marrow stops working and platelets and red blood cells and white blood cells disappear and you die of aplastic anemia. No mammal can tolerate more than about 30% replacement of normal water by heavy water. In general, all plants and animals die by the time you reach 50%. Some micro organisms can tolerate 90% to a 100% replacement but they grow very slowly and often have distorted cell shapes. The effect is akin to radiation. Prokaryotic organisms like bacteria that don't have chromosomes are more resistant. Some attempts were made to see how it affected cancer cells. but the concentrations required were too toxic to normal cells to be of any use. One easy way to distinguish heavy water is to freeze it in ice cubes. Then chill normal water in an ice bath until it is just above freezing and put the cubes in. Heavy water freezes at several degrees above freezing so it will not melt, and the cubes will sink instead of float as they are about 10% heavier than normal ice cubes and are heavier than liquid water at 0 degrees..

So if you use D2O in Whisky you'll either not feel so dizzy afterwards or you'll never feel dizzy again. Win-win I'd say.
@goytabr
@goytabr 9 жыл бұрын
bullsquid42, actually, you're likely to feel *dizzier* with D2O in your whisky. There were very few studies conducted about the effects of heavy water in humans, and the reported effects were minimal, if any, at the amounts consumed. However, one reported effect was dizziness, attributed to altered density of the fluid in the inner ear.
@Ulfbercht

bullsquid42 As an avid scotch drinker i can say that if you pay for quality you will get quality, which means you won't get dizzy. On one occasion i drank by myself more then half of a Glenlivet bottle, the sensation was astonishing.
@underoath02002
@underoath02002 9 жыл бұрын
Erez Klein wow half bottle. That's like a record or something..... Being dizzy from drinking has nothing to do with quality. It has to deal with how hydrated your brain is. The sensation of being drunk is just your brain losing water and drying out. Hence why if you drink 2 glasses of water after drinking before going to be you don't have a hang over. Beer and liquor work that way but wine has sulfates in it so that's why that trick doesn't work. You'd have in Drink something to get rid of the sulfates. But like I said quality has nothing to do with dizziness. Give me a handle of McCormicks and I'll show you quality has nothing to do with it.
@goytabr
@goytabr 9 жыл бұрын
justin bieltz, brain dehydration happens indeed, but it's only part of the problem. Ethanol and several of its metabolites (such as acetaldehyde) are also directly neurotoxic. They disrupt and/or imbalance several essential metabolic paths, they alter membrane potentials, they wreak havoc there. Dizziness and drunkenness happen less often with wine chiefly for two reasons: first, wine has much less alcohol content than distilled beverages, and second, one rarely drinks wine in the amounts one drinks beer, for example (as beer also has a lower alcohol content, but one tends to easily drink a lot of it). And while the greatest culprit is always ethanol itself, low-quality beverages may have additional neurotoxic substances or may slow down alcohol metabolism, so quality also has some influence in many cases. For example, everybody knows that cheap vodka causes a much worse hangover than a premium Russian or Polish vodka, and that's because cheap vodka is less pure, not because it has more alcohol (in fact, premium vodkas often have more, so much that some varieties are illegal outside their own countries).
