The Rules for this Campaign are:
- Dead is dead. When I die, the campaign ends.
- Full realism settings. Only the external camera is allowed for filming purposes
- Manual Targeting
- No recognition manual for random merchant ships
- Attempt to abide by the historical orders in regards to the London Naval Treaty, Operating Procedures and Restrictions

Same - Now that I've seen Tonci's expertise in sinking merchants without using the recognition manual, I can't stand the fact that Wolfpack still uses it for everything, LOL 🙃

Today reminds me of a time just North of Scotland that I did a scope check before surfacing and saw a dot on the horizon at 6x zoom. Decided to play safe and just watch and check. 5 minutes a plane flew overhead with some sort of torpedo or something strapped to the underside. Never been so happy that I checked the scope first in my life. Incidentally, that career was later lost close to Freetown due to non-stop aircraft attacks in the middle of the night.

The conning tower must have broached the waves, there's no way that floatplane would be there just to spot just from a periscope lol

I've had a go at identifying those seaplanes right at the start of the video and the ONLY possible candidate is the Vought OS2U Kingfisher. It is known that some were in service with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy but I have been unable to find dates for that, or whether any at all were ever based at Gibraltar. At the moment, absent any better information, I think it is highly unlikely. They *_would_* have the range, but would not be able to carry more than 2 light bombs. Edit: Further reseach indicates a *_slight_* possibility they could have been present from 1943 onwards, but that is very much unconfirmed.

I'm playing War on the sea at the moment and in that game the OS2U's can mount to small depth charges to the wings.

@@captainjonna1034 Yes that would be do-able I'd think. Problem is I can't find any evidence of the OS2U in British service at that early date or of them being at Gibraltar in American service before 1943. One landplane example was evaluated and rejected in early war, and that's it until 1943.

Small floatplanes often carried small bombs or a couple of depth charges historically. I imagine they have a similar loadout in the game.

U47 was not sunk by depth charges but if you read Gunther Prien and U-47 the book 📖 it says he may have been sunk by friendly fire instead!!.

Ah yes, GREED, wanting to chase down something when you don't really have the need and low on resources. It will be the end of you one day. I personally would of ignored sound contact and just RTB in your situation.

if your out of fuel in SH3 GWX OneAlex edition is it game over? cos last time i played I had to sail from wilhelmshaven and my Patrol grid is off the south coast of Ireland and i didn't want to go through the English channel and run the gauntlet, so i had to sail all the way around scotland Scapa Flow....by time i'd added all the waypoints together and included the journey home i started biting my nails cos by time i'd get back to port i'll be running on fumes if even make one bad decision in my efforts to chase down enemy merchant shipping.

Listen on youtube or read « Iron Coffins ». Its a personnal account of Werner A Herbert, a WWII uboat captain. Theres a great series on youtube about him. He survived the war but he did call it Iron coffins for a reason.

Yes, for example Schnee. But he was a Staff officer for a time, so it depends on how you define „survived“
