Part 1of the build series! Diesel pistons are different because the have higher compression because they are compression ignition vs spark ignition. That explains an extra compression ring and an extra oil ring too! See how a diesel engine is beefier as we build up a piston pack or cylinder pack to go into the fresh block with new sleeves!

Nice to see you sharing the basic engine info with your daughters. It's a form of training for life. Spending time together and not necessarily having anything to do with building engines. Your girls are adorable and look just like Spanky. It doesn't matter whether they ever touch an engine or wrench after they're grown, they are better for knowing what those things are and that they make things work. And that Dad loves and values them enough to share his interests. My wife helped a neighbor rebuild his boat's motor as a kid. She doesn't really have an interest in that now, but she has a solid idea about how the world we live in actually happens because of it.

Thanks George! I usually mess things like that up, but I was trained by and ran with and worked for a lot of WW2 era guys. My drafting teacher who had us drafting all kinds of WW2 bird parts was a pretty sharp guy when it came to that kind of stuff.

Just tore down a very similar perkins engine out of a 20 year old cat backhoe. i like the videos, not nearly enough diesel techs post great info compared to the auto industry. Diesel mechanic a hard industry to love, nothing ever comes easy in this field of work.

Belatedly, happy fathers day. Your kids are adorable. One way to give them really fun attention is to sit down with a pad and paper and and say, 'Tell me something you liked today or something you found funny. Then I'm going to put it in a sentence.' Then you write the sentence being sure to include her name. It helps them learn reading and writing. And you demonstrate that you care about what they are thinking/doing/feeling. Keep the papers in a special mementos box.

I did the exact same job on an old 1992 V W Golf , 320000 km , used the old sleeves but had to use a ridge reamer on them ,I'm enjoying every minute looking forward to part 2 , nice one Brian .

We are rebuilding a 4.236 right now. I know this is not what you want to hear but you should double check with maxi force that your two scraper rings were not swapped backwards. The spring loaded conformable was supposed to be the 4th ring for ours and the maxigroove was supposed to be 5th but in our pack that maxiforce sent they were swapped in the same order that I see you putting them on. When we pulled our pistons, we saw the order and then saw they were different in the pack. Quick call to Maxiforce let us know that it was packaged wrong. Ours is a '91 marine diesel so a different build number but I would double check.

Interesting. That ship has sailed for now. It runs awesome and doesn't use oil so it must not be that critical. It wouldn't be worth tearing down at this point.

Brian , the taper on the top ring is for the purpose of , when the cylinder fires the pressure forces the ring out against the cyl wall ! Just love your vids

Correct and it is called a chamfer. Been building engines 54 years.

Shoutout to the B-mob! 5 rings, heck yeah! I talked about pistons like these hypothetically in a DSM ring install video and said if you ran into a set like this, refer to the instructions included for ring orientation. I thought they were unicorns. Now I can send people here instead. I always like the BFATE. If I did that, mine would be about breaking anchor lines, total electrical failure, complete engine failure, catching nothing but a half dozen stingrays, or sinking boats in the Atlantic.

Your girls are darling! Sounds like you have figured out the dad thing. I try my best, but my daughter is 6 and I should start taking her out to the garage with me. I also enjoy new parts, although I haven't ever rebuilt an engine.

Will your daughter is 6?? she just wants to spend time with dad...take her out to the garage..teach her tools.. how to oil change.. I taught my son at 9 how to change brakes on my Honda accord...3 0 years later he STILL remembers it and has used the knowledge :) for other brake changes

6 is just about the age that they say "Can I help you, Papa ? So get the old clothes on them and get them 'out there'. ... It will take you twice as long but the Pay Dirt is when, at age 15, she shows up with a, would be, BOY FRIEND, that has a TURD of a Comero (that he just bought) & he says that he is hearing "funny sound" when he applies the breakers. ... She pulls the car in the garage , jackets it up & pulls the the wheels & commences to do a full on Brake Job . The 'we wimp ' drives away and is never heard from again. 'Nuff said.'

Really should have checked ring gap but to be honest I don't remember the last time I had to file rings but I still take the time to do it just in case.

the grove on the 1-2 rings are for pushing the ring out with combustion gas.

They're already matched to the piston they came with and the sleeves were sized to the pistons. Just one of the advantages to using a machine shop and doing the full rebuild kit with everything there at once.

8:15 if I’m not mistaken that ramped edge expands out when the gases hit it making a better seal from the compression.

The rings will rotate slightly in the engine anyway.

NebukedNezzer the machine shop does all that, that's why the kit was provided exactly the right size for the rebuild. So Brian doesn't have to do that.

Lol when you buy Oem the rings are already installed on the piston..... He said spray pattern hahah you know fire comes out of diesel injectors.... like I you had a camera in the cylinder you would see fire come out the tip......

Yeah, I harvested and cleaned the old connecting rods there and just kept on truck'n through the job. Some people would call that "autopilot". I guess it also kept me from bending over more. It was a good work height and somewhat contained things on a soft elevated surface.
