Glad you said its almost impossible to shoot finish nails into pine without them popping out the side everywhere. I assumed i was doing something wrong when nails popped out. Turns out, its unavoidable with pine and not a reflection of how good or bad you are as a woodworker, or how you were holding the nailer, etc. (it seems like with many of the things i build, the materials end up being treated southern pine. Does treated wood even come in other varieties?). What do you think of those pvc trim pieces?
@ronlovell5374
@ronlovell5374 28 күн бұрын
@BryanRegister It has very little to do with the wood, as this will also happen with mdf. It has to do with the orientation of the brad gun to the wood. Look at a sheet of brads, if you break a single one off with a pair of pliers, you'll see they're flat and wider in one direction. If you keep the nailer "Perpendicular" to the trim being nailed your chances of curling out are very slim as the nails dont bend easy in this direction. As a custom builder with well over 25 years, I've used tonnes of mdf, fingerjointed, pine, spruce, oak, maple and poplar without this issue. Ive mentioned this on some of their previous videos, but I guess they dont really read them. I get it though, they probably dont have the time. Try it out, and see for youself!

Apropos your discussion of trim nails vs wood grain. Pro tip. Trim nails have chisel tips. Always line the chisel tip across the grain so it cuts the grain and doesn’t get led by it.

Yup, the brads are also more thicker in one direction. The key is keeping brad gun perpendicular to trim being fastened.
@claire.mrs.t

Brads most often shoot out left or right. If you hold the gun perpendicular to the length of the wood it limits the stray firing. Since I’ve been doing it this way I haven’t had any misses 🤞🏻
@matthewwilliams683
@matthewwilliams683 Ай бұрын
I came here to say the same thing! Brads / Finish Nails will rarely stray up or down. So if you're holding the gun parallel to the board you're shooting into, your likelihood of shooting out is a lot higher
@ronlovell5374
@ronlovell5374 29 күн бұрын
Yes, this! Brads aren't round, they're more flat and actually wider in one direction. I've mentioned this in a few of their previous videos. I guess they don't really read their comments.🤷‍♂️

Jamie- although the grain on your jambs plays a part in the nails deflecting, it appears that the bigger problem is that you’re firing the nail with your gun parallel to the jamb instead of perpendicular. Thinner gauge nails have a wedge shape tip which means that 99% of the time they only deflect left or right, not up or down. Firing with the gun 90 degrees to the material will eliminate almost all of those shiners. Love the videos keep up the great work!
@95thousandroses
@95thousandroses Ай бұрын
I feel like there is no way Jamie doesn't know this. Some grain is just made for deflecting nails.
@ronlovell5374
@ronlovell5374 28 күн бұрын
You are correct, but also add that the brad is almost twice as thick in this orientation as well. Brads are not round like nails they're actually rectangular, so the perpendicular orientation is the main factor to successful nailing.
@ronlovell5374
@ronlovell5374 29 күн бұрын
I've mentioned this Pro-Tip on this channel before a couple times. The brads don't curl/blow out if you orient your "BRAD GUN PERPENDICULAR TO THE TRIM" being fastened. The brad is twice as thick in this direction and will not follow the grain in soft woods. This is something I learned long ago in my 25+ years as a custom builder in Canada.
@dustincleckler9806
@dustincleckler9806 Ай бұрын
As a shop teacher working with students shooting finish/brad nails in pine I have found that 16 gauge in place of 18 gauge helps drastically. You still have some curl out with the grain but I would be willing to bet that if that window casing was shot with a 16 gauge it would have had a lower number of shoot outs. Of course then you do have to worry about the diameter of 16 gauge splitting the edge where you face nail it.
@ronlovell5374
@ronlovell5374 28 күн бұрын
Yup, definitely a 16 has more resistance to bending than an 18, but I think his issue is more about gun orientation. Brads are rectangular in shape and are less likely to curl when gun is perpendicular to trim being nailed. I've been using 18ga nailers (air and/or cordless) well over 25 years with very little blow-outs, as I learned this at the beginning of my career from the legends Norm Abram and Tom Silva.

Guys, Guys, Guys! They make an extension for those aluminum exterior door sills! When you take the brick mold off, it slides into that channel in the front edge of the original sill. 😳 Yes, it's tapered at the same angle! Also, they make an extension jamb kit for those doors, that should work in most cases, which has the sill extender. BTW, I'm not quite as old as Arlo, but, I did spend over 45 years in the building trades.

Your explanation of putting the toilet on plywood and having the floor go slightly under the toilet is exactly what I did with my kitchen cabinets. I installed the base cabinets on a plywood "riser" and made all outside edges about a 1/4 inch shorter. I installed my floating floor then put the cabinets in. That allowed the appearance of the floor continuing all the way under the cabinets without have a quarter round trim all around the bottom of the cabinets.
@95thousandroses
@95thousandroses Ай бұрын
Good move on the cabs but I don't see how it is going to help a toilet. Every toilet I've installed, the weight sits on the very outer part of the base..... atleast in the front. There is no room for expansion even if you tried in this crucial area.

Jamie, your brads at 5:26 are facing the wrong way almost guaranteeing they will pop out in a wood like yellow pine. Always orient the chisel tip of the brad to be perpendicular to the long axis of the material into which you are shooting. The brads at 5:26 are oriented with the chisel point parallel to the long axis. Basically the handle gun should always be perpendicular to the jamb since the chisel points on the strip of brad nails are aligned with the handle of the gun. Hope that helps! -Austin
@kreparAZ
@kreparAZ Ай бұрын
i totally agree with the yellow pine and nails shootin out. i do think though it can be mitigated a lot by shooting perpendicular to the board. the way the nails come out/are made, they are predisposed to curl perpendicular to the nailer they are coming out of. so if you shoot them perpendicular to the board, they can curl but it will still be hidden. someone explained this to me years ago and i have to think about it when shooting brads as it does seem to help. despite it not always being applicable. sometimes you just dont have the space or cant get the nailer in that perfect perpendicular to the board orientation. love your videos guys! very fun to watch and i always learn something. 🤙
@ronlovell5374
@ronlovell5374 28 күн бұрын

Sorry for comenting again, but in the 50's we painted all our vehicles with a paint brush, we use camel hair brushes only, last one I did was 1946 buick, and never had to sand it the finish was always glossy and a mirror finish, It would last forever.
@colinnicol9447
@colinnicol9447 Ай бұрын
To save all that skirting scribing. You take a 3 ft piece of solid wood and rest one end on the top of the skirting, the other end on the floor, then get someone to stand on the wood close to the skirting. The weight pulls the skirting tight down to the finished floor. While this is happening just nail the skirting in place, works particularly well with finished MDF.

A tip for nails shooting out the sides: The nails have a chiseled tip, meaning they generally redirect to one side or the other. If you hold your nail gun parallel to the back piece (window jamb in this case), redirected nails will shoot out the sides. The solution: Hold your nail gun perpendicular to the jamb (in this case) and the redirected nail will usually stay in the wood. Now next window or door jamb or whatever, we'll see if you read the comments, or at least this one. 😉
