Another thing that people still don't get but needs to understand, no being AfroLatino does not mean that you have one black parent and one "latino parent". Both of ones parents can be black but still be Latino, you can be 100% black and be Latino.

Yes, basically that the Latinx identity is not about the racial concept, it could never be because is a multicultural/multiethnic, from intercontinental (African, European, Asian - including various types of Asians) and indigenous society since its beginning. Mostly mixed but not completely (saying to avoid that kind of hurtful generalizations). And that each country is so unique and different. Is more of a sense of alliance cultural identity. When people say that is like saying Muslim/Christian is someone’s ethnicity - which is not, is a different category.

As a mixed domincan with mostly black features, I always grew up struggling with my idenity because if I said I was black, my african American friends would say "no you're not. You're spanish." If I said I was latina, then people would tilt their heads at me and say "you look black, though." To this day when people ask me what my race is, I always struggle to give a direct answer. Its hard to put a label on who I actually am when I'm not considered black or latin enough for either community. I can't help but feel like I'm put into two categories of heritage before I can decide who I am for myself. Can anyone relate?

Yeh, I'am a black spaniard from ecuatorian parents. Nor black people would believe me ( which are mostly dominicans in Barcelona) nither latin people specially ecuatorians. haha I think that's the reason why I feel more spaniard than anything. Contrary to what people believe here in western Europe, in Spain, people ambrace more what's different.
@plungher

I can relate. Growing up, I was the exact tone of chris brown. The brightest on my mothers side. They're all darker. So everyone figured I was mixed. Adopted because I didn't favor my mothers people. As I hit 8th grade. My tone was darkening. I'm like wtf is going on??? Lol. I literally thought I had "michael jackson" disease. That is what I called it. Going from light to dark i was confused. Growing up in a dominant urban area, I had to do everything harder being brighter to be accepted by my peers. Except dating women. I had no issues there! But, being prejudice within our own culture is very alive and well. Has been for a while. The light vs dark crap. It needs to stop. Well, I finally accepted the fact that my tone went from that of chris browns to this reddish brown tone. Kind of weird but, i had braids the entire time. Braids were the thing to have as a young male growing up during that time. Once I finally cut my hair off 2013, after having it my entire life, it went curly by week two!! And I was confused yet again. Like wtf is up with my hair! It was braided 98% of the time, so i never knew. And in it's longer state, it isn't curly at all, kind of straight. Called my mom and said yo, what's wrong with my hair why is it so curly? People made fun of me thinking I had an actual "curl kit" in my hair. When in reality, I don't! I would go to the barber shop, and people would say, "why is your hair so good"? Or "what is up with your hair"? "Are you mixed"? Etc Finally found out who I truly was after it being hidden from me. So yes, I can relate. I never noticed my true difference between me and my peers because my moms family was all dark. Strange as it sounds. That's the family I was around all my life, not my fathers. So I didn't think genetically I was any different until the truth came out. Then It all made sense. The hair, my tone, my eyes (beer bottle brown) it all came to light 5 years ago! I'm a 33 year old man today, sad truth! I was raised "black" but never knew of my Dominican heritage. My father was a pos so, I barely knew him but, Be proud Of yourself! You're unique! 🇩🇴

It sure does! There's so much colorism ingrained in our culture that there are darker shade Latinos completely in vehement denial about having ANY African ancestry and it's so sad. As a Nuyorican of Puerto Rican descent, I'm more aware of this and embrace it in a way that a lot of native Puerto Ricans refuse to do. Thank you Pero Like for this video and I hope you do more on this topic.

I cried when I saw the Honduran girl, finally some representation! For the longest time, my parents and godparents have been in so much denial of the black ancestry carried in our bloodline, but how can one not look my father, the darkest Salvadoran you will ever find, or my mom and her curly hair, wide nose, and hyper-pigmentation and not tell me we carry black in our blood? I may not identify as Afro-Latino, but my people deserve better treatment, regardless of the color of their skin. Keep challenging the norm, we’re going places.

Having an African-American mother and Dominican dad I feel this in so many levels. I LOVE the Hispanic/Latin culture. But I have never felt welcome. I don’t speak Spanish ( I know a few words and understand some I learned on my own) because I wasn’t taught. I try to explain it’s still a part of who I am. But i always get “no your just black”. I still love who I am it’s just hard to be accepted. I LOVE me and who ever doesn’t, I’m ok with that. 🙂🙂👍🏾✌🏾

+Nathan w What are you talking about. Latinos/ Hispanics are called Brown people. Their race is Brown and it's a fact. They even say them selves too. They have always been Brown. Some White people have mixed with Hispanics maybe that has caused confusion. But light skin has always been favored a little more. However multi-race has entered the Hispanic life. But that has nothing to with it. When they say that, their not being racist, multiracial has just caused confusion!!!! Even White people have mixed with Hispanic/Brown people. Also know matter how light skin (if their actually Latino/Brown) The hair color also has a detail to identity, if it's black or brown, their Brown/Latino. (And if they haven't dyed their hair any other Color). The good thing is if their Latino for real. Their complexion will never get to the point where they look sick and too pale. That's why skin cancer won't cross someone's mind if their healthy you know. There are also other ways to tell, like their accent might be slightly different. Also about the food, hell no you must be joking😂😂😂😂 The food is awesome. Unless you're easy to be fooled and given something else. Actually go to a Hispanic/Brown community where they sell food and actually be willing to look at the food you want and order it maybe, before you be saying shit about it and whine like a child.

The truth is : EVERYONE is descended from Africans/dark skinned people. I took genetics and loved it. The professor explained that white skin and light colored eyes and hair were just genetic mutations. He explained that the original, and dominate genes are brown hair, eyes, and skin. All other colors were derived from mutations in the dominant genes. White people in class were pretty upset about it and just COULD NOT ACCEPT THE TRUTH. But it is the truth, nonetheless. When this was first realized (due to the study of genetics!) All sorts of "experts" tried to explain away why it could not be true, and said Caucasian people came from somewhere else and were not related to Africans, etc. They tried to put that back in the bag very quickly. Those in power purposely try to keep the truth from us. We're all related. They want us to fight amongst ourselves and not pay attention to what they're really doing and what's really going on. Racism benefits them. Keeps us off their backs by focusing on nonsense.

I can relate to the guy in this video. When he felt confused hearing people being called black, I dont blame him. I was the same as a young child growing up here in the U.S. I kept thinking, "ummm, we're BROWN??" I was so stubborn too, because I was so proud that I knew all my colors!😂😂😂. But people kept correcting me and I was frustrated. Then the memory was brought back when my twins were born. They are half Mexican. They learned their colors and called "white" people pink, themselves "bright brown", me "medium brown". They called it how they saw it. I didn't correct anything. They were so pure and innocent. When they went to school and heard black and white, they didn't like it because they felt it was not the truth. Love children. They're so smart and truthful. I admire how Dark skinned people in africa don't call each other black. They don't have to deal with being reduced to a color.

As someone who comes from a mixed background I always find it weird how differently people of the same ethnicity are treated based on how they look, my grandad is the darkest skinned of his siblings and he was always treated worse than them because of it, even by his own parents. We stand stronger united rather than divided and I wish more people would realise that.

It’s white supremacy. Plain and simple. You have countries like Argentina which pride themselves on being one of the whitest nations in South America. Countries like Argentina and Brazil prefer European immigration to whiten the population. In religions practiced throughout Latin American they prefer to use images of white people for Jesus, Mary and so on (though this varies regionally). You see the pattern. They are trying to subjugate the black and indigenous people, even today. And this behavior is perpetuated in mixed families.

And he goes NO you are not. 😑 And I just let him go and sink in his ignorance cause I did not want to argue. 3 of my great grandparents came from Africa. And one was from Spain. So wouldn't that make me more black than them who had a lot more generations back from Africa?

And people just couldn’t get it. At least not where I live (in Pittsburgh) I went to school here and havent left unfortunately but I cant wait to move to New York! Or I have ppl tell me I could be Dominican but not Puerto Rican (based on appearance) or Mexicans ask if Im Dominican “bc of my accent” and Im like I def sound Puerto Rican. Its crazy the struggle like even people in college made me feel like I thought I was better than them bc I wouldn’t claim to be African American all from people whove never been to Puerto Rico and know nothing about it. Sometimes I just say I’m Black and Puerto Rican if I’m tired smh!

People have no idea how appreciative of the black community Puerto Ricans should be. Literally all of our culture is connected to Afro-American roots. That mofongo you love to eat, it originates from African cuisine. That salsa music you hear on Sunday mornings, it originated from African-Americans and their taste in music. THE MAIN REASON WHY YOU SEE SO MANY DIVERSE AND COLORFUL PEOPLE IN PUERTO RICO IS BECAUSE AFRICAN SLAVES WERE BROUGHT INTO THE LAND.

Yes and did you know that indigenous sub-Saharan Africans have none, or very little Neanderthal DNA because their ancestors did not migrate through Eurasia. In fact most African people and their decedents have very little to no Neanderthal DNA. By 250,000 years ago H. heidelbergensis in Africa had become Homo sapiens. Our modern human ancestors did not begin their own exodus from Africa until about 70,000 years ago, when they expanded into Eurasia and encountered their ancient cousins. Sorry I see people like Eros Delorenzi on here and I start rambling, because we need to teach people about us. If you ever get a chance to go to the African continent do so, you will learn way more than West African history, you will learn about the oldest groups of people on the planet and meet some of the most intellectual people as well.

People simply don't realise how intertwined our histories are, Haitians and Dominicans. Several years ago, I would have told you that I am Haitian, and that's it, there's no discussion about it, but recently I found out that my great- grandparents on my mother's side were Dominican, Jamaican, English, and French, as well as Haitian, and seriously it really makes me rethink concepts of what it means being Afro- Latina, or even claiming my Latina identity in general. I think a whole lot of that prejudice comes from struggling themselves to be accepted and respected as human beings, but from also the toxic indoctrination that is passed down for generations. I don't speak Spanish (I speak French and Kreyol) and I don't feel the need to do so in order to 'pass' for Dominican (being mistaken for being Dominican happens to me regularly now, and it's funny because they always get a surprise when I tell them I don't speak Spanish) I am enough, unique, and valuable, and so are you

How many of those afro-latinx's are dark skinned/have more (west/sub-saharan) "African" features? That's an issue, cos yeah there are some afro-latinas but they're usually light skinned and/or have curly "good hair". And I'm talking about there needing to be a more equal/representative amount, not just a few here or there. No it's not "never", but with the amount of black latinx's in Latin America/the Caribbean, the representation is disproportionate (from what I've seen and heard anyway, I am new to Latin music).

how is Celia the only dark skin Latino you know? as a Puerto Rican I grew up listening to reggaeton and most reggaeton rappers are dark so I never felt left out. most latin music groups are of color so I'm shocked when I hear Latinos only mention Celia. that's what happens when you get Americanized you don't even know your people's music or culture. Romeo aventura is DARK and he is the king of bachata. the whole aventura group is dark skin. tego Calderon is dark skin, don Omar is dark skin, mach y daddy, la factoria, Zion y Lennox, Toby love etc. most salsa and merenge groups are tan-darkskin and these are people I grew up on and they are my color if not darker. so have we not come from the same ethnicity? never Lose your culture regardless of the country you move to and not all Latinos are color struck. my family is from Puerto Rico and we are a rage of colors and we have never denied our African ancestry. there are even festivals and museums in Puerto Rico in honor of our African roots.

I'm Mexican. I'm a caramelized, tanned skin toned Mexican, and throguhout my entire life time, particularly throughout my high school years most people, that would include my supposed friends, other students, my professors, counselors, and what not, used to criticize or point out my skin tone. Throughout such time in my life, I never necessarily felt hate or dislike towards myself for my skin color, but until just a coulpe of years ago, after isolating myself from these people for a while, I learned to love my skin color because I realized that regardless of what people said about it, my skin color is beautiful. With this said, if you look at yourself without other people's judgements in mind, you'll learn to see the beauty in you and appreciate yourself.

My mother is Afro Latino and my father a white Latino so I’m a biracial Latino and though I’m light skin my brother is darker so we receive discrimination for being Latino mixed and different skin tones. And there have been times when a friends come to my house and go, “ wait I thought u said ur mom and abuela Latina, there are black “ America doesn’t educate these kids on slavery and colonization outside USA and it’s sad, love this video and I love my Afro latinos hermanos I love my big lips and curly hair !!!

Tiana Camacho, You better love your big lips and curly hair, because other people do. But guard your beauty and hold your honor in high regard. Don't be used by people. Find your God; you are lsrael. You are a descendant of Jacob. God has a way of life for you and His people: www.straitwaytruth.org

That message you guys made. Is such an inspiration . you mention of being afro-latino and the struggle of within our own race . i have faced discrimination for having lighter skin than a regular latino . But im Honduran American , it doesnt matter what skin color you have the point is to be proud of who you are and where your from. Im born a US citizen But i am proud to be Honduran. Now the fact that within us hispanics We discrimate each other. In Honduras We have a afro-hondurans that are called Garifuna , they are amazing, very cultural group of people and there language is so beautiful , their culture it has become our traditional music ( punta ) so my point is dont let people tell you who you should be. Be proud of where you come from 😊😉. Im proud to be Honduran American and no one can stop me , so dont let people bring you down . God bless you guys. Love your vídeos
