From a Me-TV airing (5/15/2017) of the episode "The Case of the Twice-Told Twist", the only episode filmed in color.

I love Perry Mason. I thought he was very handsome. And I really wanted to see them together.

Had Perry Mason had a 10th season it would have been in color and looked like this episode.

its a shame CBS decided not to do a 10th season, but honestly, i would have loved to see Perry Mason in color if they would have done a 10th season

@@jhzenor61481 I saw the color episode and there's a noticeable tonal shift in the climax with a chase scene instead of a conclusion in the courtroom. It felt more like "Mannix" than "Mason". For Raymond Burr, I expect he was glad to be done after 9 very long seasons, and had he stayed for a 10th, he would have been under great pressure to stay through 14 seasons in total. In the mid-sixties when most shows had migrated from black & white to color, CBS felt that it would be most profitable to produce five seasons in color for the sake of syndication. That's exactly what they did with "Petticoat Junction", which despite lasting through 7 seasons (and the death of its star), it only had 5 seasons in color.

Why was this the only episode in that entire season to be filmed in color? And why wasn't there a tenth season?

This episode was filmed in color as an experiment but it stopped here as CBS didn't want to pay the extra to produce color episodes not to mention the cost to broadcast it in color over the air in those days. So this unique episode stands alone.

Next time you film your TV (sighs) make sure the phone isn't near the fan.

I don't recall if this episode was broadcast in color during first-run, but I doubt it. TBS claimed the first color broadcast in the '80s.

It was originally broadcast in color. CBS ordered one color episode to see what the show would look like for a proposed tenth season.

CBS did this with other shows too. There was one color episode of ‘Cisco Kid’, one color episode of ‘Burns & Allen’, and I believe others as well.

@@robertmohler9219 It was filmed in color as a test. (You'll note that all the sets were painted for b&w.) CBS was slow in converting its programming to color because the FCC had decided that NBC's "compatible color" system would be used by broadcasters. (CBS's system was not viewable on existing b&w TVs. NBC's was.) There wasn't an s10 for Perry Mason because the show had gotten old and was losing viewers. There was a later series of TV-movies, however.
