This ending is creepy as hell. So basically, Joker doesnt charge his phone. He just cuts off everybody from contacting him. I dont think any of his friends gonna come and check if he’s ok. Because they’re all living in their ideal fake reality and forget about him. Or even Maruki brainwashes/rewrites their memories about Ren, so that they forget about him. Even Lavenza cant reach Ren because his will is no longer rebellious (“i dont want to think anymore...”) this is the worst ending

I think he's sleeping because he's a wildcard so usually the illusions don't effect him like on the other routes(He faintly shows signs of seeing through the illusion). So in the failed ending that Joker didn't respond to Maruki's question by not showing up. Maruki took him out of the equation by putting him to sleep on drugs until he dies peacefully in his sleep. Since Joker was the last remaining person to cognitively remember the denizens of the velvet room that means they officially die with him. This ending is really sad, like dayum.

Also if you consider the ending to be like this then Maruki believed that Joker dying without having the option of choice was the best ending for him even if it meant killing him.

What freaks me out is that you can see cobwebs everywhere in the attic, implying that Joker has been asleep for a very long time, and will probably sleep for eternity.

@goroakechi2216 since the game starts in media res and was actually just a recollection for over half the time, it makes sense why all the deadline endings before you finish Sae's palace since none of them actually happened and are just Joker misremembering I mean, missing Shido's deadline gives you a different ending than the others ones since it's the only one after you start playing in the present

Very literal but I paused frame by frame and you see a part of Joker's face and he doesn't have a beard. It's obviously the exact same model of Ren because the Devs feel the need to make a new one just for this ending, but even considering Maruki, he probably kept Ren the exact same. No need for food or water, he doesn't grow a beard, lose weight etc. He's just the same Joker but 'trapped' in a sort of time-lock, not even dead. Kind of like Door-kun but without purpose if you think about it.

Dare I say this is the only time Maruki comes off as evil? In the other endings, he just came across as misguided yet still somewhat kind. I get his distorted reasoning here, but he easily could have given Joker (his “guiding light through his research” who he “bears no ill will towards”) a happier life. Instead, it seems all of his friends, the most important thing to him, just forgot about him. Maruki is a fantastic antagonist, but this almost felt out of character for him. Truly dark ending.

To be fair to Maruki, deadline endings are never cannon to any extent (Like Futaba's deadline ending). They're always meant to be depressing and a little bit anticlimactic, which I would say this is. But yeah, honestly I half expected this ending to cut to the "False" Ending eventually, but maybe Joker's indescion is what's holding him back from enjoying either reality, rather than anything else.

There is a twisted logic to it. Maruki believes that having to think too much is stopping Joker from being happy, so he takes away his thoughts.

Maruki, even as a god, seems _really_ bad at subtle actualizations. And it seems like he's unable to just actualize someone into a happier state, he has to alter their reality or cognition into removing the source of their unhappiness (he'd probably have trouble helping someone who was depressed because of only chemical imbalance). So, when he realizes/decides that Joker is unhappy because he can't decide what reality to live in, Maruki thinks the only option for his happiness is to remove that decision by depriving Joker of both realities. So this doesn't seem like evil so much as the end point of Maruki's tendency to choose extreme options with his actualizations. If he can't figure out how to make someone have happy thoughts, he removes all thoughts, because a lobotomy is preferable to suffering in his eyes.

Joker pretty much underwent a mental shutdown, just without that violent heart attack type death that Akechi had the ability to give. Or maybe cause in this world, you can’t die, he just lives like this for eternity.

The creepiest part is realizing the problem isn't that he forgot to charge his phone... It's that it was probably fully charged and he's slept long past the time it took to die again... And that's ignoring the possibility it just doesn't work anymore because Joker has been sleeping for years and it's too old to function anymore.

This is my favourite bad ending in the game. It truly does an amazing job of making you feel like you failed. The other palace fails were all the same thing but with slightly different diolog. And the Shido's had a problem of not changing after Akechi's death. This one truly does tell you that you failed to reach your goal. I love it

I see a lot of discussion on how this is 'out of character' for Maruki since he's legitimately kind and good hearted but he 'put Joker into a coma so he's evil'. I don't think the idea is that he wanted to rid of Joker here, but that he truly believes Joker is suffering in this situation, that Joker will be happier if he just stopped trying so hard and... rested. It's forceful of course, like he was so forceful trying to convince the part of Sumire that wanted to be herself, but Maruki just thinks this is some 'hard love' on his part and that he has to do this for them because they don't kow what's good for them and are just hurting themselves at this point. Of course this is all awful but it's still coming from the same Maruki as always that can't stand seeing others suffer anymore either.

Just another symptom of his distorted cognition, similar to in the Machinst DLC for Fallout 4, the Robobrains go on a rampage murdering people. The Mechanist insists they were given the directive to "help" the people of the Commonwealth, but the exceedingly unfortunate matter of how the Robobrains approach problems is that they see things "logically". According to their own logic, existence itself for humans in the post-apocalypse is suffering, and thus the only true way to "help" those in suffering is to simply end their suffering(and their lives, ofc). Technically speaking, while flawed, their logic isn't necessarily wrong. Similar situation with Maruki. The fact he has a palace should show that he's already long gone anyway in being lost in his own desires and distortions. While his logic is flawed, there's still a twisted sense of reasoning to be had. Sadly, Maruki can no longer see the options beyond polar extremes just like those Robobrains.

I had no idea this existed, I thought you'd get the usual "bad" ending regardless of whether you didn't go to the palace, or didn't get the palace done. This hurts on so many levels I can't. Also I never expected Maruki to have a bad bone in his body, only to be quite mislead, but he actually *punished* Joker. Ow.

This wasn’t meant to be a punishment- like with all things, Maruki had good intentions, but terrible means. He wanted to relieve Joker of the pain of overthinking, so decided to just remove Joker’s desire to think

You only get the Bad ending if you choose it. As Maruki said, he was only willing to give the bad end out of Joker's acceptance, so if Joker can't even decide to agree or oppose Maruki, then maybe this is what's "best" for him.

@@lindsey7544 I wouldn't say he's evil, he's more chaotic good. Maruki doesn't want people to suffer, but he's only human and can't read your mind. To Maruki, Joker didn't know what he wanted, but neither did Maruki. Joker was showing signs of indecisiveness, so Maruki decided he was better off not having to decide anything. Doesn't change that what he did is bad, though

Actually he not punishing Joker. Maruki simply want Joker resting without having to feel guilty or thinking about Joker failure. He don't want force Joker to accept his reality because he respect Joker, as Joker are one of most reason why his research went success. So for Maruki, this is the 'best' for him. Also, the reason why this ending is unlike the ending of failure clearing other Palace, ise because Joker already inprison in real reality (Since Akechi already died and Ren take his place instance). This is another reason why Maruki did not kick Joker from his ideal reality.

My interpretation of this ending is that Maruki wanted to give Joker a happy ending, but was worried that he’d keep rebelling and trying to disrupt it, since he still refused to accept it. So, instead, he removed him from everyone’s memories and gave him sweet dreams instead, where he can still be “happy” while also being out of the way. Incredibly fucked up, but I really like to play with this ending - is Akechi still around? If he is, does he remember? What if someone were to come across him in the attic? Could he be woken up if someone remembered him? Does Sojiro know he’s there? Almost certainly not, but maybe he comes up there, sees him, and then forgets about him the moment he leaves. Maybe no one can see him at all.

Unfortunately, nobody is going to remeber Joker - not even Akechi. Mementos fusion has been complete, so Maruki became omnipotent - which made it impossible to defy him, even for a Trickster. Even for Lavenza, who tryes but fails to reach Joker. As for does anyone see him, Maruki could have brainwashed everyone into beliving that sleeping guy at the attic is normal - like, he has always been here and always will be.

Also in my first game I got the bad ending where Akechi shoots me. Really bitter final. This game has a really scares endings

I didn't had any bad end (except the 2 new endings in Royal because I wanted to see them and I don't have a life lmao) but I agree, the ending of this game are really scary... Persona 4's ones are scary too when you think about it, only Persona 3's is less scarier...

In P4, the Investigation Team can conclude that Namatame is the killer and throw him in the TV for one: attenpted murder, and two: throwing Nanako, a little toddler, in the TV. In this ending, Dojima, the protagonists uncle, thanks you for killing him, and for avenging his daughter, Nanako. Or you can choose to not throw Namatame in the TV, which still results in the end of the world. Lastly, you can side with Adachi, the true killer, and betray your friends. This also results in the end of the world

I love how that ending shows how really messed up Maruki's reality is. Many people argue that Maruki's "happy" ending is actually good, because nothing bad is happening or implyed here - and therefore denying it is a mistake. But the deadline ending here shows the main problem: omnipotence of one man. Maruki himself decides for every single human being on Earth what is happiness for them - and then forces his will on them. He decided it would be better for Joker to sleep eternally - and put him to sleep without asking for his opinion or consent. Doc decided for Yusuke's classmate that it would be better for him to switch from painting to archery - and made him belive he was happy with it. Just what he could possibly decide next? This is just too much power for one man. Of course Doc is benevolent - he doesn't wish harm to anyone - but he is still a human being, and human beings are flawed. And as we all know, power corrupts - and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Will Doc keep his benevolence in 10 years? Or 50 years? How can we be sure he will not go mad from unlimited power and permissiveness? Like Akechi or not, but he is right on this one - in Maruki's reality every person is Doc's plaything, completely at his mercy.

I personally like to think that since Maruki appeared in his dream that it means that the full actualization was completed. Since this is his reality, he’s taken over the Velvet room, there’s no more need for a Trickster. Butterfly Lavenza fading away symbolizes this.

Ever since p2 eternal punishment he has been gone trying to regain power and is seen as a butterfly. It was also confirmed that the butterfly in p3 was him. So the fan base sees a butterfly it’s him

Unless I'm misremembering, Akechi either does not get revived if you don't have R8 by the end of Sae's Palace or you just miss a bunch of cutscenes. Although I'm pretty sure it's the former, and Akechi basically does not exist for this entire arc if you didn't meet the conditions earlier in the game.

I think Akechi's not being here is more likely to be because Maruki's reason for actualizing him was related to Joker, and if Joker isn't around, then the initial reason for bringing him back is gone. Unless you're referring to the scene where everyone is at the table, in which case... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This ending right here is the reason I will never buy into Maruki’s reality. No matter how you perceive Maruki and his character, this ending objectively proves he isn’t mentally fit to hold the power he has. Condemning a teenager, one who saved the world nonetheless, to a fate worse than death, for the crime of indecision is one of the cruelest acts we see in the whole series. At best, it’s a horribly misguided act of kindness born from severe delusion, at worst it’s a spiteful act of petty retribution at someone not bowing to his whims. Delusion and spite are not the kinds of traits you want in your protector god. Worse still, if he’s willing to do something to abhorrent to Joker, of all people, someone he considered a friend, he’s clearly capable of doing it to anyone who defies him. A lot of people tend to overlook the ‘Madman’ part of Maruki’s ‘Gentle Madman’ title when analysing him, but he unleashes it to its absolute fullest here.

He also has no problem depriving the rest of the Phantoms of their friend, leader, and the person who, time and time again, saved them. I assume Maruki would have altered their memories of Joker to make them forget, or make them think he moved back home. Either way, they will never see him again, because Maruki has no problem fucking up the lives of other people in pursuit of what HE thinks is best for them. Reminds me of when Maruki changed the life of one of Yusuke's classmates, turning them from an artist to an archer, since the student was struggling with artist's block. Maruki erased that student's entire body of work purely because MARUKI thought it was for the best. I understand that Maruki truly means well. But it baffles me that people actually agree with him and say his "Ideal World" isn't the bad ending

If you see at the end, when Joker just go to his bed, you can see that his room is all dirty and with spiderwebs, just made me remember that morgana at the beginning of the game said: "a cluterred room is a cluttered mind", refering to how he can´t think (or doesn´t want to) or make a desicion, adding the fact that he doesn´t want to talk to anyone (or maybe no one wants to talk to him because they´re living their dream life.

Dude this ending is fucked on so many levels. The fact the joker wakes up and forgot to charge his phone means that nobody with his number could contact him. Lavenham can't reach him because joker has given up already, killing his rebellious spirit. Another creepy part of the conversation between the theives is that akechi, the only other person that realised the new reality says nothing the whole meeting showing that the person that had the most faith in you has also lost faith. In the other ending where u accept his reality he puts joker in a situation where its just like normal but everyone else is also happy. In this he completely cuts joker off from reality and practically kills him by putting him to sleep. Joker' second last chance to save himself was when he woke up and then the player is met with the horrifying message of "I don't want to think anymore" that is truly terrifying. The last chance was the butterfly that could Allert joker of his eternal slumber but it dies before reaching him. Thus ending is creepy beyond belief

You know how you kinda woke up but you're still basically asleep? And then you check your phone but then it doesn't turn on and then you realize it was just a dream and then you wake up and turn your phone on and it doesn't turn on and then you realize you're still dreaming. This repeats for several times until you're finally awake and you reach for your phone but you can't find it in your bed and then you realize that you never had your phone in your beed in the first place. And then you find your phone but it's dead and then you fall back asleep... and you never want to think again and you're stuck in slumber forever and then Lavenza dies or something.

Chances are that maruki made them forget about joker. Seeing the attic at the beginning of the game, Sojiro forgot about Joker and, once again, abandoned the attic. The others have what they want so maruki left joker out of their lifes.

It's not shown in this ending but I believe this also implies one of two things in relation to Akechi 1) if he truly died IN Shido's palace and was brought back because of his relation to Joker, then he was erased from reality 2) or if he survived, because he is a wildcard like Joker and rejects Maruki's reality, and never believed it in the first place, he's suffered the same fate as him. For the other phantom thieves I can't say whether they're living their lives as seen in the fake ending (but without Joker) or if they are also going through this. Morgana is probably dead though

sighh. This ending may be one of my favorites because of how gut wrenching it is. Akira’s a character who struggles with his own identity, as if he were in a void of all his masks trying to grasp the edges of his own face, only to come up empty handed. He’s someone who chooses to hold all of his bonds close to his heart because they somewhat define him and give him a sense of “self”. Like a shapeshifter, he becomes what people need him to be while begging for his mask to not be taken because it will only reflect the ugliness of his true self. Thats why hes so attached to the Phantom thieves. Because Akira sees himself as not having any sort of tangible form, as if any attempts of trying to figure him out will only result in nothingness, an empty glass. But there IS something that defines him: his rage. He lets it take the form of his own resemblance and uses it to help others. The phantom thieves gave him a purpose, a face made out of pieces of each one of them, he let them define him after being unable to do that by himself. And while it was a mask, it allowed him to become something perceptible. And this ending kinda showcases that: how, without the phantom thieves, no one remembered who akira was. They all forgot about him while moving on with their lives, leaving akira alone back on that void of trying to figure himself out, having lost the only person who understood him and saw him as him and not the ever reliable leader of the phantom thieves. And now his spirit of rebellion died, leaving akira alone with no one who remembers him. Worst ending

IMO Maruki purposely putting him into sleepy state, so Joker no need to think a troublesome like "What can I do to stop Maruki", and also Joker no need to feel guilty if ever he going outside and look those reality created by Maruki (since Memento is permanently fused with reality and irreversible). The only reason why in turn to be this way is because Maruki do not want to force Joker to accept his reality. So Joker can keep sleeping eternally. I believe Maruki also making his friend to not thinking him much and be happier with the reality Maruki created, so no one can disturb Joker 'resting' including Sojiro. Not even Lavenza.

One of the funny parts of narrative dissonance, since you can literally just run through the whole thing even on the day you go for the treasure in-game, since you don't automatically spawn in at the Treasure or something, you load in at the actual start of whole palace, which is kind of amusing.

@@lsfaraone trying to do the whole palace after sending the card on the deadline wouldn't work in all palaces, like maderame's, futaba's, sae's, and maruki's, since the group had to do stuff outside of the palace. Although if needed, all except Sae's could possibly have been done in one day, if people not in the main party left the palace to do what was needed outside, allowing the main party to continue on. But they could at least try needed, instead of giving up and accepting what will happen.

This reminds me of the sloth victim in Se7en. But whereas John Doe was trying to punish his victim for his sin, Maruki instead forced the sin upon Joker so that he could no longer feel pain for the rest of his life. Joker laying there and feeling nothing is the essence of the sin of sloth. In a way, I think Maruki had a better victim.
