I really like your analogy regarding the difference between the build up to the bite in a police style dog versus a home/executive style protection dog needing go from 0 to 10 in a split second. I'd never thought of that before, and I've never heard any other trainer talk about this when trying to sell a dog. It's very good information for me when I am in a position to order my dog from you.

I really appreciate your straight forward no bs approach of explaining this. Is it just me or does this make it clear that a protection dog is very rare and hard to come by and furthermore to maintain? I’ve long been feeling it important to have a protection dog as part of our family unit, but now feel a bit overwhelmed not with the training & maintenance of training, (because I’m certainly willing to put in the work) but more so with the acquiring a suitable dog and trainer who knows the intricacies that you explained.

Incredible explanation of dog behaviors and how genetics play such an important role. We saw a similar thing in the horse world when the European, mostly German, warmbloods became the rage for dressage (and jumping) omg, around 40 years ago. I was in that sport and we quickly saw those imported “elite” horses didn’t meet elite standards but dumb Americans spent tens of thousands for them so they could brag about their “imported warmblood”. Yes, they often beat our less fancy moving American Thoroughbreds, Morgans and other American breeds who didn’t move with such exaggerated elevation and extension but they often came with genetic issues the Germans didn’t want in their own breeding program and of course those genetics were perpetuated here. I was into Lipizzaners due to one I met as a child, and at first we had Temple Farm which bred its own (and sold off the lesser ones) then the Spanish Riding School saw a great market for the stallions that didn’t make it into their breeding program. Eventually, the the SRS director came to the states to judge our breeding stock to elevate the standards because it was not very good and it’s a rare breed. It only makes sense the elite European dog world did the same thing.

The show horse world is the same - Europe will not sell their great horses, the ones trainers from the US bring back are overrated.

I’ve watched this video a few times and revisited the video today after watching a ridiculous KZfaq video from a popular seller of “protection dogs”. Advertising dogs for quite a premium price as trained family protection dogs. This video came to mind when the guy said that his dogs can actually smell when someone is going to do something bad and how dogs should never ever be trained to attack on command. It’s unfortunate how many people get duped into buying a dog that is supposed to “just know” and make his own decisions. I hope more people looking for a personal protection dog find Ivan’s video here before spending money on a protection dog. This is the best video I’ve ever watched on the topic of personal protection dogs. You’re a wealth of knowledge, Ivan. Thank you for all you do!

I know Mike Ritland also talks about how much more difficult PPDs are from sport, police, and military dogs. Same issues Ivan recognizes. The % of dogs that have that balance between traits are very had to find and a lot fewer than advertised.

Mike vs Ivan, come on. Not even close. Mike only knows malinois because Ivan laid the cornerstones for guys like Mike. Who in the states new malinois 25 years ago? Not Lackland. Not Law enforcement and Not Mike.. Ivan changed the mindset of training 25 years ago. If I needed muscle or guns definitely Mike, anything dog, Ivan hands down. Mike sells the dogs that fit the story. Ivan produces dogs he competes with. What does Mike produce. What has Mike done with his dogs. Buy, sell, done. I'll check Mike's site. I'll look for accomplishments other than occupational achievements. If I'm wrong I'll post it. UPDATE: I see alot of words to sell something on a fancy website. I'm good, and military and law enforcement dogs were pretty terrible compared to sport dogs 20 years ago.

1967 I bought a small German Shepard from frank Fuchs from East Germany after ww2 his family came over here ..she was of the real rin tin tin bloodline....she protected my body where ever I was at...especially if I laid down on the couch or bed...my husband who lived with us could not come into any room where I was laying down in daytime or nite time...somebody sitting beside me could not get up without her growling and getting ready to attack ...with one word from me ..one word only..she would either bite them or sit back down....she did not bite deep and hard but would hold on until I told her to let go on any part of the body...she also was a super excellent cattle herder all of her life she even got to heard some buffalo...she could hang onto a cows tail for as long as I wanted even as a cow kept running away..and she would do simple easy nipping and driving the heels of milk cows and calves...THAT WAS RIN TIN TIN PEDIGREE...She was too small to join the Montreal police force and that is why I got her...she could go in a store like a lady and separate wild cattle..a man broke my nose on a surprise attack and without a command she got him big time in his crotch..he ran away...

I watched a video from a trainer not heavily into protection dogs but some knowledge showing exactly what you are talking about. The owner of this European imported " protection dog" that cost a lot the dog was shown to not have a clue what to do when the trainer who was dressed casually walked up with a fake gun pointed at the owner (dog at his side)and dog never even gave a warning bark or changed disposition just stood there looking around

The Stonnie Dennis video. Some of that video I agree with. The dog needing trained prompts (bite target, whip/stick, guard command, low suspicion) is a legit issue. Some of it I don't. The owner had no time with the dog and therefore no handler/dog connection or expected environmentals.

Sounds like a difficult market. If only people could be honest. We are talking a lot of money after all. Here in the U.K there are some Personal Protection Dog sellers that sell really useless dogs that end up soft and pet like. I would want a dog that protects in real life. I have found that when I have asked lots of questions the guy selling the dogs hangs up. I asked, "why do you not use Malinois " he had no answer. Yet he wants £60k for a Doberman or German Shepherd but refuses to train Malinois. I do not understand that. Thank you for this eye opening video. I think it will help many people from being ripped off.

The uk isn't known for breeding the best Belgians/Dutches. What would you recommend I do to find the best protection puppy I've seen all your videos on how you raise your puppies and they are awesome socialisation and when you exposed a lot of these dogs I would be shown are rejects it does demoralise me. Hey Ivan In personal protection dogs, did you find a male dog better than a female to do the job ?
@blacksheepbear6382
@blacksheepbear6382 Жыл бұрын
You just wait, in the United States… all you need is one big movie with a dog to get people who have no business breeding dogs to cut corners to make a quick profit and even those with good intentions can mess up the bloodlines and temperament so they can appeal to families with children or even single women in apartments who can’t control a high drive dog to mess with a breeds bloodlines. I still believe the European Doberman is the most underrated personal protection dog for families. The American Doberman is a perfect example of what can happen with one generation of Hollywood corrupting a breed. I understand the health issues with Dobies but the trainability, intelligence, power, stature, etc. has the potential to become the dogs they were in the Pacific during the most violent fighting of all time. If a dog can perform in the Pacific War theater, or the best. They chose that dog for a reason, they tested all breeds and they chose the Doberman for the pacific for some reason? The Pacific theater is the ULTIMATE testing ground. Maybe WWI, but the Doberman was used as a carrier as well. The Doberman had to tell the difference between a Japanese soldier and US soldier, to attack in caves? So historically, what breed has the most potential, the Doberman MUST be the best overall protection dog ever “battle tested.” I would just plead backyard breeders stay away from the European lines so we can save the Doberman’s genetic drive and temperament.
