There are a few acts in the music industry who have been able to last throughout the decades. And there’s one act in particular, who after 40 years of making songs, have not only managed to be remarkably consistent, but have also managed to adapt to the ever-changing pop landscape, scoring hit after hit after hit. And that act, is of course… the Pet Shop Boys!
In the first of a multi-part documentary series, we go back to the beginning of Neil and Chris's journey, from their first meeting in 1981, to teaming up with Bobby O to get their first few singles to the market, to signing with EMI & Parlaphone, charting the release of their debut album, Please, and the hit singles that followed from it such as Love Comes Quickly, Opportunities, Suburbia and the unforgettable, West End Girls!

Great first part but one thing you didn't mention was the original version of West end girls was released in the UK on epic records and had a b side called pet shop boys which has never been released since back in 84

Seen the PSBs live in 1997 a few weeks before Diana died. I totally enjoyed myself and was overjoyed when Neil wave back to me after I waved at him. I wasn't expecting it but sooo stunned and still am. I do hope to hopefully see them live again.

AMTV covers the PSB's, wow! Been a massive fan of them only recently in the last year, even making a last minute decision to see them live in Birmingham! Extraordinary music and the modern stuff is still amazing!

Great mini doc! I was 6 years old the first time I heard West End Girls…in Texas! That’s my first memory of music that I actually liked vs what I’d hear my parents playing.

Thank you for making this! PSB are one of my favorite groups and my personal favorite synth pop group. Thanks for the great work. Tonight is forever is my favorite from the album… According to Neil it was going to be the 5th single. But he infamously went on a I believe a German TV show and sang it rather drunk lol and was rather embarrassed and decided not to release it as a single.

great video, I've been a lifelong fan, please came out when I was 16 in suburban Melbourne and greatly informed my late teens, also loved Disco.

in the night remix from disco was used for a BBC TV show called "the Clothes show " which was about fashion in the 80's

I bought my copy of Disco 1987. I was 9 at the time so it's in pretty bad shape. Hearing Paninaro for the first time really was a treat, those drum sounds at the start are unforgettable. Tonight Is Forever really is track of the album Please. I think that would have been a smash hit if it had a single release.

Absolutely Fabulous. Well done Adam. Looking forward to the rest of the series. I knew about the Bobby O recordings and the struggle to get management to support Hague originally but not about the importance of the impact of the Disco release & the origins of Paninaro even though I bought Alternative. PSB is one of my fav groups. back then, they hardly got any air play on the radio stations in my area. The only time i heard the PSB's west in girls was on KC C. American top 40. And then i heard Opportunities. After that, it was very hard to catch any of their tunes on the radios in my area 😥 I think they would have been even bigger had they had alot more air play time across America. And the song love comes quickly i didn't get to hear that song until i bought the cd.

Thanks man. My dad had disco and introspective on tape and I enjoyed Introspective in particular. When my life is in a trough I turn to the greatest hits but I am totally unfamiliar to their discography so this will be a great series.

The Pet Shop Boys (for me) were untouchable in this era and this is when I fell in love with them :) Latterly I've seen the 1984 playback clip of West End Girls on KZfaq and it's amusing that Chris (and Neil) actually dance a bit more than they did in their "fame" days. Even though I love (some of) Bobby O's output (PSB praising him so much made me seek out all sorts of 12 inch singles) the first version of WEG wasn't that good, compared to the re-recorded Stephen Hague hit version.

Outside of a couple songs like Its a Sin and Rent, I haven't gotten very into the PSB like I have other synth pop acts like Depeche Mode and Erasure. Can't wait to dig into their discography after watching this. Love the channel!!

I can see that you really are starting to make TV level stuff documentaries, I have no idea how many parts and how much long this series is going to be, but it deserves to go on TV! One missing piece of onforma, Please was also a available on a box set named The originals, reissue with the 3 CDs (Please, Actually and Behaviour) the CD sleeves depicting miniature LP covers, a great piece for collectors.

A series that was interesting but only lasted one part I wouldn't mind watching this all the way up until their Heritage and Legacy charts era. They are in a proper comeback back to their good 80s sounds quality again right now but no coverage outside of Mike Read and Dawn Parry makes them do poorly in the OCC Top 100 when they should be in there 100%.

Pet Shop Boys mainstream popularity began to decline after their 1988 single (which was to be their last top ten UK and US hit Domino Dancing. Many fans felt that pet shop boys had left people behind where as broadcasters felt that their and I quote ‘homoerotic’ videos were dubbed somewhat ‘questionable’ (after all life in the 1980’s isn’t what is today) personally and as a lifelong fan I felt that the album ‘introspective’ was a poor man’s ‘disco’ and it would take two years before the brilliant album ‘Behaviour’ would surface and redeem. This would however be too little to late (despite being a brilliant album) it wasn’t taken well by critics and it had become clear that the music industry in the 90’s was very different to the 80’s and wasn’t well received (although retrospectively it is now deemed ‘sensational’

From what I'd seen/read they just decided it wasn't all that good, but they were talking retrospectively! You may well be right though! Glad they did have the name change in the end 😂

@@AdamMartyn So, the Austrian boyband Westend represented Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 1983 and came 9th with 53 points but I'm not sure how long they've been together beforehand but it is likely they formed pre-1981 considering how famous they were in Austria before they were in Eurovision
