Thanks for this, so much clearer in picture and audio, I watched this about a year ago, on KZfaq in a not so good, version. Nice to see Peter and Tom laughing towards the end a lot, especially when Peter clapped his hands. I have Peter Criss solo album from 1978, and Ace's, they are both cool albums, I have both of them on vinyl.

They all sold the fiction that the parting was amicable and they were all still good friends. When you listen to any of the interviews from Europe and Australia in 1980, it's all "we wish Peter all the best, he's a member of the family, blah, blah, blah". They were nothing if not experts at putting a positive spin on things.

Tom Snyder may seem dry and not "hip" to modern audiences, but he came from a news background at a time when news reporting was just that - reporting. As in, not trying to spin anything, just straight ahead reporting. He wasn't trying to be a star or a "personality". In the modern landscape, brooadcasters are expected to be a "personality", rather than a "reporter". Broadcasters have to show some kind of personality to sponsors. Talk shows are much more abundant than in any other era. It's about being a stand-up comedian giving "fluff" interviews as opposed to learning about the person being interviewed, but with the internet and the 24/7 kind of access to information and celebrity life, there's really nothing more to learn about celebrities, be it an actor, a musician, or anyone else. So, you just crack jokes the whole time because it's expected that the audience already knows about you. Snyder is a throwback to a time when there weren't television cameras in your face 24/7, or music channels on cable, so the only way to learn about your favourite celebrity or hear new music was on late night talk shows. It was an era that wasn't obsessed with "ratings". It was very much like what John Mellencamp said about recording. So long as you're not spending a lot of money and are selling respectable numbers, the label will love you. Not so much today, where you need to be platinum out the gate, else risk being tagged a failure.

@@sfpincchicagoI liked Snyder too.Sincere genuine guy. Up until the mid 80s there was honesty and sincerity still.Then Video cameras turned anyone with one into a "reporter."🤭 Now EVERYTHING has got to be sensationalized because every dolt and their shadow has a camera to record/make shit up. Everything has gone 🤪
@sfpincchicago
@sfpincchicago 6 ай бұрын
@@jeffhodge7272 It's not so much that everyone is a reporter, it's that there are 24 hour news channels when there is just not 24 hours of news daily. First you had the nightly news at 10, then you had to add the midday news, and then you had the early morning news. Unfortunately, then there was birth of the 24 hour news channel, which is fine for certain circumstances, but there's not enough news every single day to justify the 24 news cycle's existence, so then they had to introduce anchors with their own shows, which often veers beyond "hard news". Again unfortunately, this leads to more of the "sensationalistic" reporting and less "news". By way of example, the New York Times has an opinion piece on Taylor Swift's sexual preference. Opinion piece or not, why is it "news"? Is this something that the public DEMANDED? Why is this "news" worthy of a column in a paper like the New York Times? News is no longer news, now news is "entertainment", because people demand the news be less "newsy" and more entertaining. Sure, Taylor is breaking box office records in many different categories, but that's news. No one wants news. What's way more entertaining is speculating if she's a closet lesbian! News "the people" want to know!! It's why you have such an uneducated populace. Actual news is too "newsy". No one wants that. The corporate sponsors/backers/owners don't want to be telling people about anything that might hurt their own business or that might reflect poorly on them. News as people born before OJ Simpson's fall from grace is gone. It doesn't exist. It's all corporate-scripted entertainment. There's no "anchor", they're entertainers. The corporation dictates what the on-air dictator is allowed to say. It's like how WWE doesn't want traditional "broadcasters" with experience in calling sports. They want pretty people so they are aesthetically pleasing to appear on camera. We'll tell you what to say, no experience needed, just be pretty. It's seeped into all walks of life, Bands have to have an "image" ("Backstreet Boys", "Spice Girls"), obviously news, television ("reality" TV"), etc.

He sabotaged himself. Whatever artistic integrity and direction he had initially was well and truly destroyed by the time he left Kiss. Maybe he listened to the wrong people, maybe just his ego, but the fact that his 1978 solo album was so disliked by so many Kiss fans should have told him that style of music wasn't going to sell in the 80's. In that interview on YWTBYGTB he summed up his solo years playing in clubs perfectly. "I hated it". Not many people could have jumped out of one of the biggest bands on the planet and begun releasing a totally different style of music and succeeded. Peter didn't get close.

Context is everything here. If people only go by the skewed narrative of the Stanley/Simmons shame team, this is a low moment for Peter (as if KISS were a viable alternative at that point). Unfortunately KISS in the states were already on their way out. Its not like he left a band that had any life left in them. The band couldn't justify a tour in the states due to poor album sales of Unmasked. Plus they were entering the lowest point of their career, getting sued by Polygram for hiding the loss of Ace and losing the lucrative signing package the label had manipulated from Polygram when Casablanca covered up the huge losses from the solo albums. Only Ace has been able to work out a respectable solo career minus the clown show, so none of them have room to say anything about the merits of making it outside of KISS. Paul especially since both his solo efforts cratered badly.
@ajo3085
@ajo3085 3 жыл бұрын
While we're on the subject of context, Peter was fired in 1979. Ace didn't leave the band for another 3 years and the lawsuit Polygram bought against Kiss was as much about revenge for Kiss suing them in 1980 as it was about Ace actually leaving. Neither Kiss nor Polygram could really afford to dump the other party at that point, and all that aside, the only real contextual issue around Peter that matters is that he pissed his own talent and career away.
@Playitstraight44
@Playitstraight44 3 жыл бұрын
@@ajo3085 Theres no question Peter let his drug problem wreck what he had. And yes he was voted out because he had become too much of a liability. But too much of that gets embellished by Paul. He loves to use terms to establish what he likes to sell as his authority, which he didn't have. Peter was a co-founder of the group, so matter how you want to feel about him he had as much authority as Paul Stanley. So to suggest he was simply "fired" like you or I might be fired is not what that was. As a co-owner he was relieved of his duties but was still entitled to his quarter share of the band's revenue. Look at it in the same manner as John Schneider being voted out at Papa Johns, even though he was the founder of the brand. You think he's actually gone? Hell no. So until Peter was bought out in 1988, which was his biggest mistake, he was still entitled to the revenue he helped create in that brand. Again, its the music BUSINESS.

@@ajo3085 Thats not dressing it up. Thats the business equation of what went down. Its not a good thing on either side. Peter Criss blew it. But Paul Stanley did not make it happen, nor was it his decision. It took the collective body of the company to arrive at that and it was clearly the right move.
@ajo3085
@ajo3085 3 жыл бұрын
The "collective body of the company" was well and truly Stanley, Simmons and Aucoin by that point and the business equation was simple. Did they reassign, retrain, demote or transfer Peter Criss to another part of the business? Nope, he was shown the door.... business 101... if someone in the company isn't doing their job, they get fired, retrenched, terminated, axed. Paul and Gene could go around saying Peter retired twice from Kiss but it wouldn't change the fact that he was fired twice.

That Gene & Paul portrayed him as?? Ever read any of the books about them Christopher, including his own? Ever wondered why the '79 tour appearances were mostly just Paul, Gene & Ace? Ever hear Bun E Carlos say he'd been on standby to play one of the LA '77 shows until Pete was carried to the drum riser? Ever listened to his playing on the Dynasty tour shows (in particular)? The guy was a mess.
