Peter's live album "Frampton Comes Alive" back in 75/76 was massive. Peter wasn't cut out for all the BS that goes with being a super rock star. He didn't want it. He just went on doing his music in his own way and left all the rock star mania behind, but not without scars. He's a good man.

Peter was one of the arena rock gods. A long with the with wildman uncle Ted Nugent "stranglehold" probably the best guitar solo ever and he was the only rockstar that never did a dr😮g or alcohol in his life his vice was females. On the other hand 👏 Peter was wired to the max. If you didn't notice it then you never been done any good pure CO🤗AINE. I was definitely filling like he was at the time..😂

I agree. Meeting Peter Frampton us on my bucket list. So is Mark Knopfler of Dires Straits. Frampton because I've been a fan since childhood. This album came out when I was 9. As I learned saxophone, I discovered I could play by ear. Peter Frampton and Neal Schon solos I used to mimic on my horn. I saw him solo and with Bowie in concert. PHENOMENAL!!

This is the guy that headlined the Lynyrd Skynyrd concert that you reacted to from 1977. That's why all the girls were up front to get a better view of Peter. He's still touring at 73 years old!! Great reaction!!

Quick story about the guitar he's playing there. A few years after this his band's gear was on a cargo plane somewhere in Brazil. It crashed on take-off and his guitar was presumed destroyed. 30 years later, someone got in touch with him and said he'd seen someone in a local band with his guitar. Two or three years of investigation and negotiations later, he managed to buy it back. All the serial numbers and marks checked out so it was definitely the same guitar.

He is from Beckenham, Kent, England ..This was right before his super fame kicked in when Frampton Comes Alive ! was released in 1976 and it still stands as the greatest live album ever . He was so self conscious / loathing that he turned the radio off or to another station if one of his songs came on because his fame was so overwhelming .. Recently he said he can only wish it was different and he should not have felt like that ... Chek out Show Me The Way

Thanx Maddy. Pete is Brittish Maddy. Frampton inspired a lot of guitar gents, The talk box, it also has other names, pete picked it up from some old blues players. It's basically a synthesizer that runs from your voice box through your instrument, or rather from the instrument to ones voice box. No one had really incorporated into radio play songs, and not for a long time and only played with it live, so at the time we thought Frampton came up with it, but he merely expanded on it. One day do yourself a favour and put on "Frampton Comes Alive" and sit back and get swept away. It was the highest selling album of all time at the time for good reasons. Prior to this, Aerosmith used the Talk Box (trade name) in their song "Sweet Emotion" and Joe Walsh used it in "Rocky Mountain Way". They didn't use it as extensively as Peter Frampton but it was used before this in "radio rock".

Peter Frampton had the electronic know how to develop his own version of the talk box (called the Framptone!). He was a teenage star in a band called The Herd, then joined Steve Marriott from the Small Faces to form Humble Pie, along with Greg Ridley (ex Spooky Tooth) and a very young drummer named Jerry Shirley (ex Apostolic Intervention). Their Live double album - Performance - Rockin’ the Fillmore is an absolute classic! After this he released several solo albums, and carried on performing until quite recently. A great performer and a genuinely nice person too.

Great performance from "The Midnight Special". Peter Frampton is an English rock musician, singer, songwriter & producer. He was previously associated with the bands Humble Pie & The Herd. I had his famous 1976 album "Frampton Comes Alive". His biggest hits are "Show Me The Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Do You Feel Like We Do" & "I'm In You". He was famous for using a talk box in live performances.

Frampton was the pinnacle of rock music around this time. He was cover boy on many magazines aimed at teenagers. His album “Frampton Comes Alive” was a smash. His combo of talent, charisma, and good looks made him a top pop star during the mid-1970’s.

Frampton is definitely up there as one of those inspirational guitarists you don't hear enough about. Everyone that grew up with this was understands how influential he was. He is incredibly talented, as is the entire band. I do recommend the live album version of this song. (Frampton Comes Alive). It's really the gold standard of this song, but the Midnight Special version is great too and at least you get to see what he's doing.

That's called a Talkbox, he plays guitar at the same time voicing the words with the tube! again, pure raw talent... playing those lead parts on the guitar, he's just playing, not even looking at what he's doing just feelin it! Also, I love Perth AUS. Wonderful people there, every time I've been there!!

You are correct in how he often plays without watching his hands and fingers. I have been to 100’s of concerts in my life including Frampton in ‘77 and many times since. I was always amazed how he knows his way around his guitar fretboard without looking. One other guitar great who does the same is Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult.

I need more talkbox. Famously Joe Walsh also uses them extensively and Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer actually has two guitars using them in parts. I don't know why more guitarists don't make use of them. It's so expressive and interesting to listen to when done right.

Another great reaction Maddy! Got to see Peter Frampton three times, first when he was with Humble Pie (def worth taste testing some Humble Pie with the late great Steve Marriott, esp Black Coffee from the Old Gray Whistle Test), and then sat through two performances back to back (I was a photographer's assistant) front row at the Capital Theater, Passaic NJ, when he was on tour supporting his Frampton Comes Alive album. Great killer shows all of them.

Peter Frampton is undoubtedly one of the greatest guitarist ever. He never repeats a guitar solo, they are always different. He belongs on the stage, his live performance's are always better than the studio versions. He was a long time friend (since high school) with David Bowie. You need to listen to more. He does a great version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", it's worth a listen.

Peter Frampton is a giant dork. He loves to play music. And that's an incredibly entertaining combination of energy to have on stage. People can't not have fun with a guy like that performing. That's why his album sales were mediocre, his live shows brought in bank, and the first album of his to have any real success was his first live album. Watching Frampton live is one of the most pure things one can witness. Also, that thing is called a "Talk Box". A small amp pumps the guitar sound into his mouth which is then "processed" by the shapes his mouth takes, and the microphone in front of his mouth picks up the sound. Very simple concept. VERY difficult to get the hang of. There's a reason not many people really excelled at the thing.

You nailed it. In 75 and 76 this was the soundtrack of thkse years. I was a senior in high school blasted this in my 64 Chevy in the school parking lot. Nkt at 66 i still drive a 64 chevy ...same color same look and even have my old school license tag and other items from that car long ago . A drive in it with this album blasting is still just as rewarding now as it was then. Like a cruise back in time this old widower can remember the days before i married that high school sweetheart....47 years ago.... Driving down the road blasting the same old tunes in the same old car....you missed the best decade to grow up in.

Tip of the iceberg. You really have to dive deep into Sugerman's Midnight Special. It was all live performances, absolutely no lip sync. What you see is inspired performances from the best in the business and young soon-to-be stars. Everything is worth a watch.

Ok Maddy. Voice box. In simple terms this is how it works. There's a box on the floor at the bottom of the mic stand. in that box is a small speaker. When a foot switch is pressed it diverts the sound of the guitar to that speaker. The sound then travels up a plastic hose attached to the mic stand and into the mouth where it can be shaped and change by the guitarist. That sound is picked up by the vocal mic and amplified in the usual way. A simple device, but it takes someone to think of the idea in the first place. Daft Punk use a computer version. ✌️❤️🇬🇧

Peter's black 1954 black Les Paul guitar was lost in a fire (he thought) during transportation between concert venues in South America in 1980. 31 years later someone recognized the guitar and gave it back to Peter. It survived the fire in the case but had some burns. They think it was pawned and sold around South America during the 31 years.... Peter had it restored but kept the burns and still plays it today! There is a video on youtube about it -- one of the most famous guitars ever he used in his famous double live album from 1975. EVERYONE had that album at the time

He was "The Face Of 1968" and in a band called The Herd.. He then eas a member of one of the very first " Supergroups" by joining Humble Pie. His Album "Frampton Comes Alive" was enormous and is playing one Farewell Tour in November 2023 although he has inclusion body myositis (IBM), an autoimmune disease that affects his muscles. Although he has experienced some weakness and loss of function in larger muscles, his fingers still work great.

Maddy, great to see you react to this perfect rock performance. For a great performance from a more mature Peter Frampton, I'd suggest reacting to one the several videos of him doing 2023 live covers of "Black Hole Sun" (original by Soundgarden). In his covers he's in his 70's and starting to suffer from a wasting disease that's gradually affecting his ability to play guitar. Although he's looking thin it's hard to see any impairment in the 2023 videos. I suppose if we played at his level of proficiency we might. Personally I love seeing older musicians like him performing at such a high level and so clearly enjoying themselves.

Talk Boxes were used quite a lot in the 70's. Movies, Bands ( Aerosmith) , and some Tv detective shows used them in various forms.

"Frampton Comes Alive" still one of the greatest selling Rock albums of all time, wore the grooves right the hell off of that album!!!! I saw both Eric Clapton and Peter Frampton (on different days, they use fake names) at a little beach side blues bar in San Diego in the early 90's, they were kind of doing a warm up before going out on tour! The Rolling Stones are also known to do this, last time I remember it was in Toronto!! I also saw Judas Priest and Cheap Trick doing this in a small bar in Waikiki when I was living in Hawaii!

I ran into him at the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo. Walked by a riverfront stage, heard music and realized immediately it was Peter. I guess he lived in Cincinnati one time, maybe still.

Yep I was also about 13 years old when this double live album came out... Around that time everybody used to cruise town in this little city where I live and I was no exception to cruising around with my older sister in her mustang. Everybody that was cruising Town back then had eight-track tape players.. in every car was playing the same double live albums... FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE... KISS ALIVE... BOB SEGER AND THE SILVER BULLET BAND LIVE... TED NUGENT DOUBLE LIVE GONZO maybe...

Hey, Maddie. You would have loved The Midnight Special. A television show and place where music acts met once a week to play and entertain the masses. You'll notice it was casual. The people sat on the floor. And the vibe was chill and loose. The biggest names and current chart toppers of music provided great entertain every week. With multiple acts appearing on the same stage and sometimes with each other. It was a great time. As a teenager, it was a way to see the musical acts I'd only heard on the radio or seen in magazines. So, kick off your shoes, pick out your hair, put on your halter top and bellbottom jeans, and get ready to rock out. Let's put a little soul into your program. Gladys Knight and the Pips made performed one of their biggest hits on the Midnight Special. It's called NEITHER ONE OF US and she is on point. Enjoy

Saw him live in Pittsburgh. He opened for The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac in a day time concert at Three Rivers Stadium. Great concert.

As a teenager when this album came out Peter making his guitar sing blew us all away it was everywhere on the radio TV etc. I recently saw him and he's still amazing including some epic new songs. A vocoder is typically used with a keyboard. This is actually a talk box made by Heil.

Not a vocoder. This is a talk box. This is actually an effect you can make yourself if you have a speaker driver and a tube by running the guitar through the speaker, and up the tube where you shape the sound with your mouth, and that sound goes into the stage mike. A vocoder is a keyboard instrument you talk and sing into, like in Michael Jackson's "PYT". It is very similar sounding to the maximum auto tune as used in Cher's "Believe". Not the same technology but it sounds pretty identical.

Oh boy! My generation's MTV, lots of great acts on Midnight Special. Also this is a great album, pretty much every teenager had a copy of "Frampton Comes Alive" back then. I know I did. This is a slightly abbreviated version, the album cut is just over 14 minutes. The "talk box" was used by other bands/artists back in the seventies and early eighties. Joe Perry of Aerosmith used it on "Sweet Emotion", Nazareth used it on "Hair of the Dog", Joe Walsh on "Rocky Mountain Way" and Ricthie Sambora of Bon Jovi used it on "Living on a Prayer" to name a few.

Gigantic hit and what became his signature song, good choice and version! Frampton was excellent from the start, see his awesome work in Humble Pie with 1971s all time classic double live album Rocking the Filmore and I Don't Need No Doctor, then from his first solo album try Lines On My Face, a tremendous ballad from incredible guitar accents. Ahhh...1976....Couple buddies and I jumped into my Dodge Challenger and drove 72 miles to Tulsa, Okla. to see 'Natural Gas', 'Santana', and 'Peter Framton' It was outdoors at the Fair Grounds Race Track...hotter than heck. It was also "bring your own beer". Back then, girls in Okla. could buy beer at age 18, guys had to wait till age 21....so the suds was still plentiful, you just had to be responsible. It was an awesome time. This song was the 'highlight' of the concert...and Peter stretched it out to 40+ minutes. What a jam session. Really enjoy watching your reviews.

Frampton is probably one of the top underrated guitarist. He is one of the few that used a triple humbuck pickup on a les Paul and the first that I am aware of to use the talk box. Classic talent. Great video

I swear Frampton Comes Alive was standard issue for every teenager in the late 70's early 80's. Every single one of my friends had this album. I was the first in my group, but within a month everyone had it. Frampton was a very underrated guitarist. He put on a great show live. You always got your money's worth.

Pete Drake was one of the originators of the Talk Box. Peter Frampton heard it when he met Pete during the recording sessions of George Harrison's album, "All Things Must Pass." Peter then had Bob Heil from Heil Sound make him one, and well the rest is history.

The voice box was around before Frampton, but he made it popular. Now it is a simple digital effect. Back then it was a cool idea.

Great news! Peter Frampton on tour this month and next month. He is in Windsor Ontario this weekend March 16th 2024 and then across the USA thereafter. This is and always will be one of the greatest guitarists that has ever lived. Phenomenal phenomenal phenomenal for all generations! timeless, incredible, exceptional. Get tickets and go see him live you'll never forget it. I did 12 years ago and I don't regret it. Was the highlight of my five years living in the usa.

Frampton is from England. In mid 70s he had this fantastic album come out "Frampton Comes Alive "and later he became fed up with music industry and lift the stage. He came back later and has played with different people Ringo Starr of Beatles fame helped Peter come back and he has played with Ringo Starr's all star band .Plus he has had his own projects. A great guitarist and musical artist over all..

Mostly people refer to it as a talkbox. And Frampton was huge in the mid-to-late 70s. It's funny to me because it came out when I was in junior high and I liked it but my younger sister and a lot of her friends just loved it and my sister had a couple of his 8-tracks, including the iconic live album, which is not related to this television show appearance. Nazareth also notably used the talkbox in the late 70s on their huge hard rock hit, Hair of the Dog.

Just found your page tonight and I’m loving it! One of my earliest memories is riding in the truck with my dad as a kid jamming out to Frampton’s “Show Me The Way.” Frampton was such an innovator and really one of the most underrated rockers of all time. Glad to see you enjoying his work for the first time and really getting into it!

All the kids in school were talking about the guy that made his guitar talk! Soon I and other graphic arts kids were making posters, stamps and shirts with “FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE” on them! Great time to be alive!

The "Talk Box" was first used in the 60" on the Pedal Steel Guitar by Pete Drake and Billy West. Frampton brought it to main stream after meeting Pete Drake at Abby Road studio.

The talk box came about in 1939 and was used as an effect in radio for years until the mid 60’s when it started to be used in popular music. Peter made it famous in the mid 70’s and then Richie Sambora guitarist for the band Bon Jovi kind of became the next big user of it on many of their songs. I saw Peter in concert in a small venue years later and when he got to that part of this song he held a conversation with the audience for like 5 minutes. It was great

Frampton was known more for his live shows. His biggest album was a live album. I don't think I have ever heard the studio version of any of his songs.

It's worth noting that when we were watching The Midnight Special back in the 70s we were all very aware that the producers of The Midnight Special had a hard and fast rule "If you can't do it live, you can't do it on The Midnight Special. We all knew we were hearing a completely live performance. Peter was British. In fact, Bill Wyman, The Rolling Stones' bass player, wanted him to replace Brian Jones when Jones left The Rolling Stones, but Peter was not yet a legal adult and the Stones' management wouldn't allow it. Frampton popularized the use of the Voice Box effect with this song in particular.
