FYI: if anyone wants to know more about Steven Biko I suggest you watch the movie "Cry Freedom". It features Denzel Washington as Steven Biko and the movie was directed by Sir Richard Attenborough.

When I listen to or watch Peter live in concert over the years the word that always comes to mind is ' integrity'. He has never sold out on his beliefs and he exudes talent which he has used to focus his music on the bigger issues. He is one of the biggest influences on music in his lifetime

I saw Peter perform this back in the 1980s - before the end of apartheid. Peter used to end his show with Biko - and yes, it is still a great song, but back in the day, when all the political turmoil was going on in South Africa, this song was even more powerful. You talked about how this must have felt to be there - it was unbelievable. Being part of that crowd singing this together was truly mind blowing.

I've known this song for more than forty years now, and it still brings lump in the throat, gooose bumps on the skin and tears in the eyes for me

I performed this song at a southern private high school in the US in October 1986 with full bagpipes -- I WAS NEVER PERMITTED TO PERFORM AGAIN AT THAT SCHOOL. I don't regret a moment of my eight-minute performance. I can still see the looks on the administrators' faces today.

Hey Ryan you’ve got a great attitude and channel. No BS over the top intros and nonsense. Being quieter doesn’t appeal to many but for conservatives looking for intelligent commentary and reactions,it’s gold. This song,Biko (pronounced Beeko) is more than classic gold Gabriel. True story telling at it’s ultra ultra best. Add the musical element with African drums and sinister undertone to match the lyrics. Shocking case of police apartide(sic)brutality in 77. Once the flame begins to catch the wind will take it higher. Oh so good clever lyrics in tune with actual flaming nature of racism. This song shows the diversity in creative art. It often leads to great artists. Gabriel is one of those artists.

When I first heard of Peter Gabriel's Biko song was an episode of Miami Vice called Evan. At the end of the show they were using the Biko song cuz the main bad guy killed Evan who was playing an undercover police officer n they have Crockett & Tubbs have a shootout n Crockett goes to Evan n comforts Evan as he dies in Crockett's Arms. Good episode.

The story regarding Steve Beko is interesting, Peter is a passionate activist and especially in regards to amnesty rules and regulations and the disregard of the rules and regulations by dictatorships around the world and he is publicly vocal in his condemnation. He is a great lyric writer and is equally passionate in regards to his craft.

Ryan if you like his first 3 albums you are gonna love his 1982 4th album 'Security'. To my mind the best of his first 4 and still one of the very best. Also cannot wait until you get to his last original studio album 'Up' that is another hidden gem. Happy listening. By the way you are better than JP as he tries too hard to pick apart a song, and I feel as you do what does it mean to the individual listener!

Ryan, if you get a chance on your own, check out other Biko live performances. There's a lower video quality one from him at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday celebration at a packed Wembley Stadium (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqeaqZqCqLfPqqs.html), another huge open-air concert in Johannesburg against AIDS with Mandela present (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b6qVeMuil7vFiHk.html). The one in Johannesburg is also special because the song Biko was banned from being performed in South Africa until that concert. This song is very important to PG and had a worldwide audience to expose the terrible reality of apartheid in South Africa, which, as PG states in some concerts, is "written in their constitution."

I follow JustJP. Also Alex&Andy is very good. These channels both talk about lyrics. And different parts of the songs. Melodies, rhythms, lyrics, tone, meaning message, style. The song meaning and their own interpretations. A little insight. Not just good or bad. I like your channel but I do think that people like a little insight. Or impressions. How it affected you. Not just I like it or don’t. Keep going though. You are doing great.

That’s fair. I’ve done hundreds of songs. I think if for example you watch my Genesis journey I fan boy out. But , yes I don’t do exposes. I’m just feeling what I feel. I may not be long winded and I don’t think I can force that. I’m also not musically knowledgeable. So I’m just a fan.
