Peter used to open his live shows with this song. The band would come in from the back of the audience banging drums while that ominous droning sound played through the theater. Hell of a way to open a show. I saw him in 2016 and he opened with this as well. It was very powerful.

Winter of 1982 was my first Peter Gabriel concert, in support of his fourth album. Ottawa Civic Centre, only six thousand seats. We heard the onstage drone of the elephant hunting sticks. Over the roar of the crowd, we heard the heartbeat drumming out. My buddy and I strained to discern from where the drumming came. Then way up in the rafters, four storeys high, we saw the band. They had entered the auditorium through an archway and they marched, single file, with various large drums strapped to their chests. Poom-poom... Poom-poom... Poom-poom... "The Rhythm of the Heat". It took them fifteen minutes to wind their way down through the audience. Not one person touched the band members, it seemed. Six thousand cheering fans, nobody on the stage and we were already entranced by this entrance. Finally the band climbed onto the stage. Peter stood on a small platform. The white ceiling of the Civic Centre was less than sixty feet above the stage, I'd reckon. Peter at last opened the song with his primal yell, the gong sample shook the arena. A floodlight beneath the artist's feet burst upward, shining eerily upon him. And up above, his shadow was briefly cast against the ceiling, like a giant cloud-god in the sky above the African plain. I have never seen video footage, pro or bootleg, from Gabriel's 1982 Winter tour. That show remains one of the most mysterious and emotional nights of my life.

PS: the full Secret World concert video is just a freakin joy to experience. It's PG at his musical & creative best. I think if you watched the entire concert live on here I'd watch it because I guarantee it will rank up there for you as one of the best concert videos you've ever experienced. The bad part is how much you'd regret not experiencing it live. And far be it from me to rub that fact in by saying I saw that tour twice, but I'm not going to tell you how amazing it was, won't do that, nope I won't tell you that it's in my top 5 best concerts ever, nope I won't do that it would be beneath me. Gabriel is a remarkable composer, indeed. His soundtracks for "Birdy" and "Last Temptation of Christ" (among others) are testaments to that, as well. His music has always been cinematic.

Ryan, you completely get it. That's not an easy song to appreciate since it's a bit odd, but Peter's emotion comes through and gets inside of the listener. Not everyone can pull off a song like that but for him, it works. Just when you think he's got a more commercial sound (based on your comments from the previous album) he throws out an album like Security, just to remind you he has the ability to be in AND ahead of the music curve. I can't wait until you get to "Don't Give Up" from the album "So". For me, its one of the most beautiful songs of inspiration and love ever, not in a religious way but a personal one, it's Peter showing his brilliance as an artist in every sense of the word. When you do get to that song, I beg you to watch the music video of the song (share the video with your wife, you'll get a hug I guarantee). It's the simplest of videos ever made but the most emotional I have ever seen. It's a duet with Kate Bush taking the female role in the song and she sings it on the album as well. I've heard and seen the video many many times and it still has the same effect, lump in my throat and goosebumps. Also Kate Bush is amazing. An acquired taste to many (her early records made her voice very mousy for some reason and can get under people's skin) but I look past that and appreciate her uniqueness and performance art. Her later records cleared that mousy sound up and I just love her.

_"That's not an easy song to appreciate since it's a bit odd"_ I had no issue enjoying it from the 1st time I listened to it... I have severe issues enjoying Don't give up : totally depressing, Peter forgot to eat his Xanax pill again when he wrote this. Sorry, I'm not interested in just hugging and with lukewarm women. Actually, the women who stick with the wrongful views about love in love songs all end making a mess of their lives and so do all those who write these BS, and it's exactly Pete Gab's case... Actually, some of the few who did realistic love songs were Frank Zappa and Gainsbourg... Gainsbourg's "Je t'aime moi non plus", either with Brigitte Bardot or Jane Birkin is monumental. Banned from airing in many countries despite not being in domestic language! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qt-VqLmq0rbQlp8.html The first n°1 banned hit single in the UK The Bardot version added a huge scandal and was withdrawn from release for 19 years despite having already been aired a few times... Just look at Gainsbourg's face? He had them all! Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Adjani, etc etc... The only one who resisted was Whitney Houston, which is sad for her : when you're able to write the best love song ever while the girl singing it is not even a singer, imagine what could have happened with the voice of Whitney! But one thing for sure : Gainsbourg only got the inspiration to write a song for a woman if he was in an intimate relationship with her... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Je_t%27aime..._moi_non_plus kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8toatGQ1NWVfas.html Then another one, the HOTTEST LOVE SONG EVER, again by Gainsbourg... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpibhpd0zc27oWg.html Note : the real video-clips are blocked for non adults while there is nothing X in, at worst you see some titties and suggestive postures. Has YT hired religious morons?

Nice reaction! It’s cool to see you so puzzled about Peter composing such different kinds of songs 😁 But that’s what being a genius is! And I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but his voice hasn’t changed that much, even though it’s been four decades since he released the song! Sure, it’s a bit deeper, but it’s not that different! By the way, from the two girls doing the backing vocals, the brunette with long hair is Peter’s daughter, Melanie 😊

And, once more, I am so glad you seem to enjoy it as much as me, as I remember my very first listen when I touched the needle on to my black vinyl for the very first time. Thanks a bunch! I was surprised at your choice of live video, but really enjoyed it. Although, I had heard the New Blood Orchestra version, I had actually never seen that particular version. Excellent! I know you choose whatever you want, but for your very own benefit (as well as mine), I recommend "Lay Your Hands on Me" (with the Athens '87 LIVE version). I'll say it again: Peter Gabriel would not be able to indulge himself like this if he were to remain in Genesis, and Genesis would have essentially turned into his backing band; and we would not have had anything like Genesis would do from A Trick of the Tail forward. Those who want to complain about Tony Banks running Peter and Steve out of the band -- don't. There was more music that wanted to come out of the band than the band could hold. It's good that they all managed to get it out.
@swirll360
@swirll360 3 жыл бұрын
That is a completely valid point, and conversely, if Phil had not decided to stay with Genesis when he went solo there would not have been anything like Genesis. It makes you realize just how much the stars aligned for this band
@RubesGoodBrainCoffee
@RubesGoodBrainCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
@@swirll360 What Phil brought into the band early on, besides his skills as a drummer, was being able to arrange their music much better than they could on their own. For example, Steve was talking about writing the notes for 'Los Endos' as four straight-forward quarter notes. Phil's the one who suggested drawing them out. Using his skills as a drummer and being able to play around with the rhythm probably benefited Genesis enormously. He was also great at matching up bits of their music to make them sound great. I'm convince that if Collins hadn't become a drummer, he would have made a great producer.
@swirll360
@swirll360 3 жыл бұрын
@@RubesGoodBrainCoffee Yes, yes and yes. I'm also sure that there were times when Steve made important contributions to song structure as well, that's just the nature of collaborative songwriting bands. Early Genesis records gave songwriting credits to the entire band, it was only after Peter left did they list individual members songwriting credits. When they did that it was clear to me that Tony and Mike were or became the chief songwriters with occasional credits to other members. But yes Phil turned out to be equally as important to the success of Genesis as Peter was in the early days of the band.

The New Blood stuff was from 2011. He issued an album called 'New Blood', which were orchestral re-interpretations of songs from his back catalogue. This live version came out the following year and whilst I guess I'm less keen on the orchestral versions and don't listen to them regularly, it's fascinating to hear how he's reworked them. The guy's a genius. Feels like an appropriate time to point you towards an interesting documentary about Peter, shown in the UK back in 1982 and filmed during the making of the 4th album, subtitled 'Security' For us in the UK, his first four albums were just called 'Peter Gabriel', with none of this Car, Melt, Security naming! :-) I hope you get a chance to watch it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qcmdjKpitdyVj4U.html

Yeah, I agree. I bought New Blood. Listened to it once and passed it on. The friend I gave it to listened to it once and gave it away. Forgettable I think. Might have been better if they were all new songs, but the orchestra didn't do any justice to those well loved older songs. Also, kinda feel Gabriel sold out after the 4th album by giving his albums names. In the 70s he gave an interview where he stated that he regarded each album as a new edition - like a magazine with the logo in the same position but with a different cover. I suppose the call of bigger sales in the USA was too big to ignore.

In 1977 Peter Gabriel recorded vocals to "Strawberry Fields Forever" for a tribute album to The Beatles. It was a 3-record album full of famous musicians singing to orchestral arrangements of the Fab Four's music. Title: "All This and World War Two". Gabriel's contribution was in turns beautiful, creepy and threatening, from the way he used his voice. When you do something This well, there is no need to repeat it. "New Blood", in rehashing a decades-old idea, waters it down and renders it anemic. And it also delayed Gabriel's next real album by another few years. It has been 18+ years since "Up". I hope Peter lives forever but does he really think that he will?

Ryan, If you like the old Genesis with Peter Gabriel I am pretty sure you mat also like the original Marillion with Fish as lead singer. Scottish singer Fish mentions Peter Gabriel and Genesis as some of his influences and when you hear him he is very like him. His live performances were also very PG like. Suggest you begin that journey with the debut album 'Script for a Jesters Tear' from 1983. Anyway hope one day top hear you gibe that a go.

Ryan, if you did your Journey with Marillion it would complete me. They're my second favorite band behind Genesis. And similarly to Genesis, they were harder and grittier with their first singer (4 albums) and changed a bit with their second singer (14 albums). Other than the very early days with some personnel changes and then Fish leaving in 1989, they've had no line-up changes and are still going strong. And just like Genesis, fans have the Gabriel/Collins singer argument with Marillion's Fish/Hogarth.

This song is such a strong opener for the album. IMO the definitive live version is from PG Plays Live. While I like PG's orchestra, it doesn't do this track any favors. After belting his line "the rhythm has my soul" with the large build-up, all the energy is wasted and deflated with what comes next. It just needs the punch of the drums that provide the rhythm of the song.

Obwohl ich andere vom Best of Album kannte. Nur dummerweise war das ganze nicht digitalisierte Album auf das Stück ausgesteuert.
