The symbiote in general wasn't portrayed well in this film. The symbiote is supposed to make Peter cold-hearted and evil, sure they show this in one or two scenes, but the rest of the scenes with the black suit is this crap.

What a lot of people didn't get was this scene was a play on the "Rain drops keep falling on my head" montage from Spider-Man 2. In that scene, Peter had given up being Spider-Man, but his natural geekiness was used to remind the audience how lame Peter is without the suit, even when he tries hard. It got a lot of laughs from the audience, particularly on the final freeze frame. The emo Peter scene followed a similar format, in that Peter is even more geeky when he acts "bad". The problem was they followed this up with the awful jazz club scene, where the tone shifts from cheesy with the dancing to uncomfortable with Peter hitting Mary Jane. It was too big a shift and it didn't work.

Mark Robinson That makes sense with 2, but in 3 I thought the whole point of the symbiote was that it feeds on his anger and turns him into a complete asshole, if anything, this and the other dance scene don't make sense, but Peter dating Gwen out of spite and hitting MJ mades sense.

This scene actually made sense in my eyes. In this scene, we see the Symbiote twisting Peter's mind and attitude. His "street dance" perfectly expresses that. It conveys his arrogance, cockiness, and aggressive attitude as a result of the Symbiote bonding with him. Just because he's dancing in the street doesn't mean that he isn't affected by the Symbiote like some haters of this movie believe. If anything, it shows Peter's arrogant and cocky attitude which the Symbiote does to you as a result of bonding with it. I don't understand why people hate this scene when it perfectly expresses the Symbiote taking him over.

I always viewed the Symbiote as being a sort of addictive drug. It makes Peter feel like the top of the world, but he becomes so dependent on it, it takes over his life. The video game of all things made me realize this. The game becomes so much easier when you have the black suit, and you have no reason to ever take it off. There are no downsides. But when the Symbiote Suit away later, you feel helpless because your attack power and health have dramatically decreased. Either way, it's making a great Halloween Costime this year. Yes, Emo Peter, not the Symbiote Suit.
