Formula 1 is a sport that has a far-reaching influence and is adored across the world. In its 73-year history, it has drawn in drivers from all four corners of the globe, with 47 modern-day countries (and one special administrative region) being the birthplaces of a Formula 1 driver. The number of modern-day countries to have officially been represented by drivers, however, is 42. In most sports, competing athletes have a fair amount of freedom regarding whose flag they choose to compete under, and they’re not just limited to which country they were born in. A prime example of this in Formula 1 is Alex Albon; he was born and raised in London, he is a British national and has a British passport, but as his mother is Thai, he has chosen to represent Thailand as a Formula 1 driver. I’m sure some of you are looking at this map and thinking, “Zambia? Algeria? Turkey?”. Well, all will be explained in due course. Time to indulge in a bit of geography: Formula 1 style.

Brook, want to congratulate you not only for the amazing research, but also for the effort you put in pronouncing names in other languages as well. I believe there is no need for anyone to completely nail the sounds of languages they don't speak, but simply trying to understand what they sound like goes a long way in being respectful to other cultures. Thumbs up!

30:02 this is a tiny error that doesn't really matter, but I'm definitely gonna be that pedantic. "What was then the Weimar Republic" is technically not correct. The term "Weimar Republic" was never the name of Germany, it's a term used by historians to refer to the specific time period where the Weimar constitition was the constitution of Germany. The official name of the country was still "Deutsches Reich" at that time, and it was the same country as before, just with a constitution and without an emperor. I'm pretty sure the average german person would've called the country "Deutschland" in that time, and I have read that names such as "Deutsche Republik" were sometimes used.

Eddie Irvine is British. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, not Ireland. F1 got the wrong podium flag (Irish) early on in his career and his family was sent death threats because of it.

Prince Bira only win once for a race non grand prix F1 At the last moment he passed away non any British recognised that a man who collapsed and died is Thai race driver And fortunately Alexander Albon British-Thai will held Thailand flag so count on second F1 driver
@OsellaSquadraCorse
@OsellaSquadraCorse 10 ай бұрын
However, the video is about where drivers are from and Albon is not from Thailand; even though he adopted the flag when it was financially convenient (he raced under the British flag throughout his junior career) and is half-Thai through parents. His dad, Nigel Albon was a well-known UK racer in the 80's-90's in Renault Clio and BTCC racing, which is where Alex got the racing start from.

the map: Good effort but you failed to include Mongolian Mazepin (with all respect for my yurt living brothers and sisters as well as those born with a chromosome more or less) Greenland, named after the cucumber, the only veggie that grows there, hence the name, you see circles are round and so is who is that Hindu speaking driver? Kazakhstan little known fact but when the F1 Netflix movie thingy was shot and the driver actor drove some meters with the actual starting grid Borat was in that car now let's watch your video.

Most interesting, though some historical and political titbits are a bit off. Poland was never remotely likely to get annexed by the Soviet Union for example.
