PETER FRITZ | Life Behind Glass

PETER FRITZ | Life Behind Glass

Күн бұрын

Most of us live according to the stories we've told ourselves; or stories others have told us. So, I believe the main goal in life is to become who we really are. And usually, that demands a pivot; possibly many. Because if we want to live authentically, we likely need to do things differently. Or different things. This is the next chapter in becoming who I am.

I first saw your lenses rating video and immediately followed you because it was something different and calm about your video, and then discovered a channel full of value. I am passionate about photography and even tho i don't own any gear yet, i like the reviews especially yours because of your casual style. I am glad to see you post on different topics, especially cars and nature, but most I apreciate your life advices in general, these are very useful for us the younger generations.

Thank you Peter. Who says sitting on a sofa with a coffee and a chocolate bar watching youtube everything is a complete waste of time. Ive got no money but sick of muddling by in Averageland where ive resided for 'sensible careful zero confidence reasons.' I found myself watching Boxster and Jag XF videos ( Yes im a Brit) and Ai decided to throw one of your Boxster not 911 vids at me. Thank you for sharing and making a car video actually a very stoic psycological boost video. I like phitography and cars and nature but ive always had dull, boring low paid jobs. I want to be a writer one day and i think even though cars arent essential in many areas or are a needed luxury as in travel and getting about, going for your dream car but being sensible, you showed you did sacrifice but what could be let go off. If the car helps you get all your horses galloping inline then why not. Thanks again Peter. Up the Auzzies. You say things as they are. Less fussing about. Australians are a very real people, hardworking and bloody funny. Grown up with pals like Paul Hogan,Clives James etc etc so ill add you to the list. Well done mate. I dont give a flying kick about the iphone 15 for all the sensible reasons,as in tech for the sake of it that most owners wouldnt even know how to use aka cameras, but now ive learnt as you say not to care so much about others opinions. Ironically watching your video and being almost realistic about the Jag( no family) or the Porsche ( money?) Im now looking up snazzy MX-5s! Ill start tavthe beginning of fun then drive through the .arvelous stuff. All the best brother. A new subscriber. PS I did finally get a reasonable DSLR for my hobby of aircraft and airshows. Now i just need a quirky sportster to put it in. 😊😊

Great to hear from you twice in one cup of tea (it’s Saturday morning, here). You’ve said too many kind things here for me to even begin responding, but if I remind you a little of Paul Hogan, we’ll, that makes my whole day. Funny you should mention aircraft photography. I just went out twice in the last two days to do that for the first time, and I loved it! I can see the appeal, for sure. As for cars, yes, if you don’t go straight to Porsche - like you mentioned in your other comment - go MX5. Provided you fit in them, they’re brilliant!

Always enjoy you philosophical pieces Peter and can as an introvert relate to much of what you say. Although having a similar marital background it was loosing my best mate and photo buddy of 40 years in a car crash (his fault) that really sent me down a different path mentally. Recently a friend loaned me a book titled “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life” the major takeaway for me was “how to not give a fk but not be an arsehole” . Or let the trivia go because in the grand scheme of things it’s unimportant but in doing so don’t be a prick. Like you I started taking photos at 12 with a Minolta HiMatic 7s and as a hobby it and film/video have been my central rock in a swirling but ultimately interesting number of relationships, jobs and home bases.

Wow - that’s quite the history, Chris. The first camera I ever listed after was the Minolta X700. I poured over the brochure for more than a year. In the end, the first camera I bought with my own money was the Ricoh XR-P. I still have it. I love that book, BTW. I bought 10 copies and gave them to family and friends. Even my mum loved it! Take care, Chris.

It's extraordinary that this happened along my feed (as I was looking at videos about Porsche 981 Boxsters) as much of this speaks so perfectly to the course my life has taken (and continues to take.) I worked in the entertainment industry in LA (scripted film & TV to be specific) from age 22-45, essentially my entire adult professional life, until leaving it. I'd done reasonably well in one field (far better than the vast majority of the hoards that arrive in LA with dreams of working in Hollywood, as I never needed any other source of income) but, like so many working in showbiz, it wasn't the particular field I WANTED to work in, and knew it all along. I considered it my waiting tables gig and never fully committed to it, certain I'd get the other thing going. Well, as often happens there, it never happened and I utterly flamed out. Tired by the crazy and toxic world of Hollywood (little did I realize it's, of course, just a heightened microcosm of an often crazy and toxic world in general) and also wanting proximate distance from a devastating personal relationship heartbreak, I walked away and moved across the country, turning a hobby/avocation into a second career. Not unlike the cliche of a Manhattan couple who quit their professional careers to follow their dream of always wanting a coffee joint, bistro, etc. who soon find themselves slaving away at mostly menial tasks for less than minimum wage, I realized this gig was a lot less enjoyable as a job than hobby. And that I'd taken for granted the $200K salary, sense of respect and accomplishment, etc. of the field 'I never wanted'. Then, through the spouse of a client, I became involved in a tech startup, which was some of the most intellectually rewarding work I'd ever done, and which also had the possibility of a very meaningful exit. But it all unraveled. Now, at 55, I find myself looking back at something of a lost decade for me, as well (the pandemic years, specifically the policy responses to it--a distinction with a difference--didn't help either.) I'm starting to genuinely worry for the future, and I feel like, without the glamorous (at least to those on the outside) successful 'Hollywood person' identity and also now something of a floundering who-knows-what, that nobody has any reason to value me, thinks of me as a failure, etc. I have a deep and diverse skill set based solidly in both creative and commerce, still feel (and thankfully--for now--look) easily a decade younger, but I'm paralyzed I find it impossible to start anything new because--you guessed it--I'm terrified by what others will think...how will it be perceived. 'Is he kidding, starting a multi-platform content enterprise at 55?? Is this guy delusional or what? What a fool!' etc. etc. I know intellectually how silly that it, but emotionally I'm finding it incredibly difficult to thaw the block of ice that is my occupational and indeed life deep freeze. This piece was a great reminder of the folly of allowing these voices, totally imaginary--ghosts, really--from holding us back. Thank you, KZfaq algo! And thank you Peter. I try to keep in mind a quote from the goofy-but-happy twin brother Nic Cage character in 'Adaptation'...'life is what I love, not who loves me...I decided that a long time ago.' Nice piece of writing, that. Cheers.

This is a profoundly generous and candid insight into the ghosts we all seek to please, pacify, or impress. Thank you so much for sharing it, and for doing it with such eloquence and class. Fantastic video Peter! Here are some of my favorite quotes: “If no one cared what you did would you do things differently or would you do different things and if you were incapable of worrying what others thought of you would you wake up tomorrow and all the same decisions?” “What you think of me, is none of my business” “No matter what I do, The people that matter, don’t mind. The people that mind, don’t matter.” How did you find out what you loved ("spring out of bed at 5am")? As inspired from the video as I am, I'm not sure I can think of anything. And if there has been things, I haven't been able to persist at for very long.

That’s so generous - thank you. And that’s a great question. I think many of the clues (like so much of life) lay in our childhood. We tend to dismiss what captured our interest as kids; forgetting that in essence, we’re the same people inside when we’re 30, 50, even 80. My interest in drawing, writing, taking photos, and making things all developed in my teen years, and my love of cars and motorcycles began even earlier. So these days, what gets me out of bed early is the desire to create (ideas, images and videos), and mix with interesting people like yourself. 👍

My dream is comeback to normal life in my country and finally buy my dream car an MX-5, now it’s ND3. The questions I ask myself are how the people of my country who are literally surviving now will look at me. Is my purchase dictated by an external desire to be more cool and special in a country where people prefer SUVs or BMW. Or is it just my inner desire and I don’t care about external factors. These are the thoughts I wanted to share. In any case, I have already made the decision to purchase, now all I have to do is return to Ukraine. But when I can do this is still unknown

Who am I? Took me a long time (in my life) to work that out and to accept that the things that have happened in the past have happened and I cannot change them. I also know that I made choices (some of them questionable) that I now need to live with because either I have to or it is actually the right and unselfish thing to do. With hindsight, I'd have preferred to make different choices, but hey, that is life. I know and have long accepted that I will go to my grave with regrets, but I cannot change them. What I do try to do is look forward, and make better decisions and be in the moment.

"If nobody actually cared what you did, would you do things differently, or would you do different things?" It is disheartening when we do things with the idea of seeking the attention and approval of others. Gotta get those 'likes' and 'thumbs ups." Gotta get those subscriptions and newsletter sign-ups. Gotta do all the social media things to prove our worth and popularity because that equals approval and success. At least that is what, in this day and age, we are taught to believe. I have come to realize it is not true.

It’s the conundrum of the ages, Ash. Ultimately, I guess, we’re particles of stars, refined over millennia; each of us a one in 400-trillion stroke of enormous luck.
