A look at the new Petzl NAJA friction saver. We run through the specs of the device, why Petzl have designed another friction saver and what problems they are trying to solve.
We show installation, use for moving and stationary rope systems, retrieval for both systems, a neat little hack for choking the NAJA on a skinny stem and our final thoughts on the device.

They should deliver it with a set of matching throwballs to complete the "package"

The type of work I do and the way I go about doing it really does require this type of kit to be set up from the ground. Never understood the point of installing a pulley saver after you've already hauled yourself up to the tie in point? I use the ART twinline for this exact reason, amazing bit of kit. Also well done on going through the whole video without mention it's... interesting design 😂

A well put together video with clear instructions and actual usage tips (ever thought of being a teacher) A valuable insight for both seasoned arb professionals and those just starting out. Many thanks. btw, 'Bless you' to the person who sneezed at 15:40

Awesome video Dan, I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on this new bit of petzl kit. I like the simplicity and the affordability of the Naja, i think its definitely a step up from my old tatty ring and ring cambium saver! Thanks for the video

Looks decent for moving rope but SRT doesn't need friction savers, not sure why people overcomplicate SRT anchors so much when a knot and occasional quickie shackle is about all you need. Maybe a small pulley for a texas tug if doing lots of redirects. The holy grail of friction savers for moving rope systems is a ground installable one and this one isn't so it seems only a minor improvement. the ART twinline is ground installable but requires two full length climbing ropes, at which point you might as well just chuck a throwline over a fork and pull up a rope with a pulley tied to the end with the other rope through it then base tie it. Still waiting on a proper installable from the ground system that works with one climbing rope. While I'm commenting I'd like to thank you for the video on the L1D ratchet pulley, brilliant bit of light rigging kit that means I rarely need the port-a-wrap anymore. Always wanted a good aerial friction device and even welded one up myself once but the L1D is better because it can pull the rope back up just as easily as a pulley. My favourite bit of rigging kit now so cheers!

I love it the Naja. I personally Jam the mini against the pulley that way I can come down off of redirects. I’ve reached out to Petzl about this. They didn’t say it’s was inherently bad to do this just that it might damage the mini carabiner which I’m okay with since it’s easily replaced. Thoughts?

If it only means tying the ends of the rope together when you get to the ground, that’s not much of an extra step to prevent any unknown and potential unnecessary damage. Just an opinion though

I bought one and it’s great using it for ddrt . But using it for srt you didn’t mention during retrieval you would have to pull the Naja thru redirects during retrieval. It’s great if you have no redirects but who climbs like that.
@integritytreecare4794
@integritytreecare4794 5 ай бұрын
So on retrieval srt do you have to pull it thru redirects?

Great video, thanks! One question for SRT retrieval: The both ends don‘t have to be in a line together down from the Naja, right? You can come down somewhere else as long as you can connect the both ends to untie the knot, correct?
@ClimbingArborist
@ClimbingArborist 10 ай бұрын
That is correct 👍

I wonder why they didn't make it mid line attachable at the pully side, like a CT rollnlock. That could save time if you were using it as a redirect, if that's possible.

Good review & video, once again! Unfortunately this is just another niche product that is overly complicated. It has its place in MR systems, but for SR it is completely unnecessary. Floating Ring is simpler, cheaper, & solves so many more climbing difficulties.

Seems like a good option for me. Since im just doing stuff at my property and not for business its hard to justify the price of the higher end items. That said time is money especially with young kids...

Compared to ring savers that's true, but it's actually one of the more affordable pulley-based savers. The ART RopeGuide, Teufelberger pulleysaver, Petzl eject all cost more, at least around me
