I'm glad you think so highly of the machine, I just got one for free!! (a lot of old machines being discarded here in germany) Mine is an older 50s model (treadle powered) and needed a complete disassembly but I'm sure I'll get it to work. Im astounded at the quality of the parts. Barely any play even after >70 years of regular use (the last owner used it until a year ago). The complexity of the parts is amazing as well especially given there was no CNC. To think how every single part was turned or milled by hand is mind boggling. I hope mine will run as smoothly and reliably as yours one day. I'm very happy I invested the time in getting it and fixing it up now.

My sewing machines are predominantly straight stitch so I was pleasantly surprised to peruse this video and learn about the Pfaff 30s. I have always appreciated German craftsmanship and quality. You have enlightened me of the advantages of the Pfaff 30 over the Singer 15s and especially over the Singer 201s. Thank you for posting this video.

I want to thank you for this video. There was a Pfaff 30 advertised near me for $50 CAD. I went to Google and came across your video. I watched it then hit the ground running to go get the machine. I got it for $40 CAD. Wonderful machine that I may have passed on if I hadn't seen this video. You really do make the best reviews on machines of anyone.

So glad I found this video, it was the only one I found that showed the sewing done well... I was investigating this machine because when I went to visit my mom while back, I got on their cities craigslist and found this machine listed for $130, It was beautiful, almost like it was used a very little and put away. I am so glad I was able to pick it up.. its an amazing machine like you stated! This was my first vintage machine and i have since found a Brother that does zig zag, so I am set with one straight stich and one zig zag machine! thanks for posting this video. It helped out immensely!!

Hi there! I hope you still read comments this old! I do love your videos and have learned more about Pfaff machines here than anywhere else on YT save for one channel in Germany. I have one of these electric Pfaff 30s that has a lot of family history behind it, and I do not want to send it out nor can I afford to. I might have to completely rebuild it if I cannot recondition it, and it really is a machine that I love. KZfaq is rather scant when it comes to complete rebuilds of any vintage machine, let alone this one. I need to first source parts and then find some tear-down guides. Right now I am going with the guides on cleaning and maintenance of various systems on this machine, but nothing is coming up when it comes to the internal mechanics such as the arms and joints and timing and lord knows what else. Especially in the US. I found a site in the UK that sells a ton of the accessories and a few replacement parts like the original rubber belt, but they are in the UK and of course will not have the US motor. Shipping is also expensive, though they will do free overseas if you buy £50 from them. Buying parts one at a time is not really an option when you are moving slow. This might be out of the scope of your expertise or perhaps is just not in your wheelhouse at all. But you are a good place to start, and I am asking this question of a few other people as well just to cover my bases. Anyway. :) Please let me know what you do/do not know, and can/cannot do or recommend. Thanks! :)

Thank you for the kind words. These machines shouldn't need much to get them going again. Are you having specific issues with the machine?
@kimpanattoni
@kimpanattoni Жыл бұрын
@@thesergeant3524: Mainly making sure the motor is repaired properly, and knowing where to get a replacement for the US motor if things go south... The motor needs a complete repair to the contacts everywhere; which is not a terrible issue, but is annoying as all get out. The core and the outer windings really need a good soak in alcohol or something in order to get the gunk out. This machine has only had 1 owner since it came out, but it has been sitting put away in its cabinet for decades, and in a barn no less. There is all sorts of black shmutz in the windings and on the cambric tape, as well as the wires with the wound sheaths. Nothing too terrible there. The commutators have no groove in them from the brushes, which is amazing, and the bearings in the housing are phenomenally clean and the brushes and springs are in great shape. Still, I need to make sure that I plan for the worst and hope for the best. I know where to get the black belt and the tire for the bobbin winder (it has a flat spot), as well as a number of other parts and accessories, but they are in the UK, and therefore do not have the US motor available if I really wound up needing it for some reason. I do wish I could show you some pictures. Anyway, there is certainly one question that I can ask right out and that is about polarity. The plugs and cables I have do have the standard plug with the wider tine on one side for polarity sake, but from what I understand, polarised plugs were not a thing back in the day. That is one of my larger concerns when rewiring the machine. And of course, as to issues with the machine, I am more concerned with issues that could arise as this is my first machine restoration ever, and I really do not want to foul it up. Again, hope for the best and plan for the worst, and definitely do as much research as is humanly possible. I have not touched the thread tensioners, that is one of my next projects. Right now the person who has taken me through general maintenance of the machine in general is in Germany and her videos are of course in German. KZfaq translate has been very helpful, though. She has a hand crank machine, though it kind of looks like her machine might have also had a treadle at one point; hard to tell or I just do not remember at the moment. There are a couple of other channels I do watch, though the majority of them do not have a lot of Pfaff specific information. I try to learn the information that can be carried from one machine to another as the principle is the same. One thing you might be able to tell me is the right LED bulb for this machine. Finding info on bulb sizes, contact type (thread or the one I cannot remember the name of but has the two contacts on the bottom of the bulb) and a number of other basic info on the bulb type has gotten me so many different answers that my head is spinning. Good grief... Yes, this comment is way too long and feels like a novel that would even be a novel if I was emailing someone. :P Anyway, thank you for getting back to me and I would love to chat more with you on some of this stuff as time goes on and as time permits given your family. :) I still have a number of questions based upon the manual for the machine, but this comment is already way way too long, so I will go ahead and leave you with this information for now. Thanks again! -Kim

I own a Pfaff 30 build in 1952, it is as shiny as yours. And I own a Pfaff 31 build in 1932 that is less shiny but still runs like a new one. I prefer the 31, it is even a little more solid, have sewn a jeans with it, works great. Both machines are very recommendable. Clean it, oil it, and use it forever. But please dont run it that fast, max. 800 stiches per minute is recommend.

The video is great, thanks ! but I don't know why all persons having a Pfaff 30, 130 and other models treat them so hardly with very high speed and very thick and hard fabric. One musn't forget that those machines were initially designed with treadle, so meant to work at a slowlier pace. Motors were added later. Also, there were meant for domestic use, not for leather (or thin one only), plastic and so on. There are other machines especially designed for sewing leather or sailing fabric or sew at a high speed... So yes, Pfaff 130 and 30 are strong and aren't afraid of tough work, but please treat them with care, use them for what there were meant to an they'll last forever. Such quality you'll never find anymore and if you wear them down, it's a real loss. Also, mine (treadle) has a full metal handwheel. I think it's a former version of the model and I guess the one in the video was released a bit later (the stitch length lever is more modern too) or has had some parts already replaced.

Thank you for this informative demonstration. I got a Pfaff 30 from 1938, and it is an amazing machine. I think that it did have some changes over the years of production. I noticed: Race gate, tensioner, reverse lever, casting of steel base. When I look at google for pictures of the machine, I almost only see the steel spoked handwheel. Could it be, that the plastic or Bakelit handwheel only was used for the American market?
@thesergeant3524

The spoked wheels where use with treadle and hand crank models. The Bakelite wheel was used on machines outfitted with a motor.

@@thesergeant3524 The one I got has a spoked handwheel and a motor. But it is most likely, that the motor was build on to the machine later on, because it is of another motor brand. So the used the existing handwheel.

+April Cherry , the machine will definitely not sew 20oz of leather. If you're going to be sewing 20oz you're definitely going to need an industrial machine. I'd suggest a compound feed (triple feed) walking foot machine like a Singer 111W155, Pfaff 145/545, Adler 167 or 267, etc. 20oz is even pushing the limits of these machines. Beyond those you would want to consider something like a Tippman Boss, Cowboy CB2500, etc. Goodluck!

Both the Pfaff 30 and 130 are great machines, however, they're very different: The straight stitch 30/31 has a central bobbin gripper and they're the predecessors of models 6 and 60. The zigzag Pfaff 130 has a double rotary gripper and is the ancestor of the 230 and 260/262. The bobbins of these two lines of machines are not interchangable.

Speed depends on the motor.....
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 9 жыл бұрын
SuperModerngranny To a degree, yes. Most motors come in two varieties, 5,000 & 7,000 RPM with 5,000 RPM being far and away the most common. The difference you'll see in speed between machines is due to difference in diameter of the 'pulley' on the handwheel. The great the diameter, the slower the machine, the smaller, the faster.

I just restored my grandmother's Pfaff 30. Does anyone know where I can buy presser feet? Would presser feet from a 130 fit?
@thesergeant3524

Congrats! You're going to love this machine. Feet from the 130 will fit but will generally be too wide. I'd suggest picking up some vintage Singer feet (for straight stitch machines). Any low shaft foot will work of course but straight stitch specific fee are you best bet.

Thanks for the tip! I bought a lot of 130/260 feet but they're just a little off. I wasn't sure if other brands would work. I'll have to check out some Singer feet.

BTW they would need to be low shank feet, right?

hi, thesergeant, do you know Pfaff 104? is it a industrial machine or for home stuff?
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, not familiar with the 104. I don't know if that model was imported into the US or not. It looks like a large treadle machine and perhaps is a precursor to the Pfaff 34? Sorry I can't offer more.
