Thanks for the nice video! Great explanation, only took me three times to fully get it ;-) I take a lot of joy from checking ph and ec a little less regularly, as I learn to trust my setup and know it's limitations. Now, I make adjustments I a weekly basis. Not the most efficient, but the result are only a little less. Also, learned to recognise deficiencies! Peace.

Finally...someone dispels the "let pH drift up...then knock it back down" myth. I remember back when I was 17 or so (yes - I was very much into hydroponic gardening way back then - almost 25 years ago) I would skip regular high school classes and sneak over to the public library across the street and stay for an hour or 4 devouring any crusty book on hydroponics and soilless gardening I could find. Dr. Howard Resh had the best ones. Hoaglands salt fertilizer recipes...Cornell "peat - lite" mixes...raft systems. All kinds of groovy info I implement in some fashion to this day. At anyrate...I distinctly remember about authors saying letting pH drift out of target was definitely not a good thing. I also remember bugging landscape pond shops to order me a particular Little Giant submersible pump that I wanted to build my first closet system. Indoor gardening shops were unheard of in my area back then. Lol. Good times.

+Jeremiah Wilson Sounds like you've been 'round the block more than once Jeremiah! ;) I've lost count of the number of times folks talk about pH drift with an esoteric look in their eyes. One particularly over-confident Welshman once swore blind to me that letting your pH drop to 4.0 and then up to 8.0 was the way to go. He was adamant that this was the only way to go. But he was an idiot, obviously, who - when pressed - could not even begin to offer up anything resembling a scientific explanation for his actions. Truth is: This topic goes very deep! Once I have pH 103 revised I will get to grips with this in pH 104 and look at the science of selective ion uptake and how pH actually affects this at the molecular level. Then we can finally put this myth to rest or, at the very least, describe what is happening in less general terms.

Another great video, Everest. My question, however, is about nutes; specifically the brand both you and I use: GH. Word around my job at a hydroponics store from other enployees and quite a few clients who also use GH is that it was bought out by Monsanto. Casual googling tells me it was actually Scott's MiracleGro that bought them out. In either case, it seems like my preferred brand of nutes has been bought out by some faceless corporation. Personally, this is absolutely going to change my purchasing patterns. But what are your thoughts on the matter?
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 9 жыл бұрын
Claudio Mateos Hi Claudio. Thanks for your positive feedback and question. From my standpoint, General Hydroponics is still General Hydroponics: premium quality mineral inputs, tightly batch controlled / consistent, easy to use, versatile, pH stable, and properly and respectfully priced! That's why I have used it for many years. (Put another way, my plants are even less interested in hydroponics industry politics than I am! Heh!) Okay-from a business point of view, General Hydroponics is still General Hydroponics! Sure, it's become part of a larger family tree but I understand that its day-to-day operations are run by the same people-the same researchers work in their greenhouses-the same friendly folks answer the phones when I bug them with queries, the same CEO, and it's the same state-of-the-art factory making the nutes. You're right, Monsanto have no ownership links with Scotts or their subsidiaries, Hawthorn Gardening Group / Hawthorn Hydroponics so that's probably just BS spouted by invidious competitors. I'd add that Scotts are hardly "faceless". Hugely successful, yes, ubiquitous in garden centers, yes, and a publicly listed corporation, sure, but don't forget that it started as a family-run business and some of the descendants of the inventor or Miracle Gro still help to run parts of the company today. Big doesn't necessarily equal bad. I have huge respect for the founder of GH, Mr. Lawrence Brooke, who was pioneering the hydroponics industry back when I was in diapers and has led it ever since. I even had the pleasure of meeting him at a trade show once along with dozens of their awesome sales reps and they are a top class crew. So, awesome products, awesome people. Of course, there are many other nutrient brands out there and all that competition is a good thing, but I think that GH R&D potentially having even deeper pockets can only be a good thing for us growers. If you want to change something, look to our debt-based monetary system which anonymizes dollars and monopolizes credit in the hands of commercial banks. To quote my main man Henry David Thoreau, "There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root." Let's just be sure that, before swinging our axes, we've picked the right tree! Peace and happy growing, Everest.

Hey guys can someone help me out here? Im new to gardening and decided to feed my soil plants with General Hydroponics. For a month I've been adjusting the PH BEFORE I add my nutrients to my water. Today for the first time I tested my PH AFTER adding nutrients to my water and got a PH of 4.1!! So I tried adding a bunch of PH-up to try and get it up to a PH of 6. But after using large amounts of PH-up Im still only getting a reading of like 4.3! What the heck is going on???

Hello Everest, I posted a bunch of comments with questions to your other videos and here is a question about pH. I made a pH adjusted feeding solution for my seedlings in a measuring cup and there was 1/2 of the cup left from the time I top watered those little Grodan plugs. Two days later I wanted to use the solution again. The pH has risen from 5.5 to 6.7 just on its own. I use General Hydroponics PH DOWN. It is clear to me that the acid that was dissolved in water simply broke down whether completely or partially. I must say that the PH was lowered by the feeding nutrients first and then I used the pH down. Is there any pH adjuster on the market that would not break down this fast. I can understand now why pH in my res water grows faster than my plants :-). Thanks!

Hi Everest I use RO water with 0 PPM. My natural water pH is 8+. I always bring it down.

Hi Everest, I have been doing some testing (new to hydro). Here is what's happening: RO water with 0 ppm gets infested from air os something with bacteria when the temperature rises. My water was left on the table with some residual light from the LEC lamp shining on it and got warm. It had enough food from the feeding solution for bacteria to multiply. The bacteria and the temperature rise cause the spike in pH. Since then I learned to control the environment in my reservoir. Watching your videos religiously but when I start doing something there are always hurdles that nobody talks about. If you want to get some interesting feedback, I'd be happy to share (if you wish to provide some place for posting those observations -PM, channel blog, or something) I have done some rockwool experiments and water experiments. My plants are now happy and green, explosive fast growth. Thanks!

@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 7 жыл бұрын
The clouds are carbonates and bicarbonates precipitating out of your solution due to high localized pH rises-and, as such, they are unavailable to your plants. You should dilute your pH up 100:1 with water first and then use that to adjust your pH.

Everest Fernandez Thanks. This reservoir change out thing is one thing that has me concerned about hydroponics in general. Even though they you save water compared to regular farming/gardening, it seems to me that throwing out the old water is a real waste and it can still be a lot. And by the time you have to throw it out, seems like it is on the edge or being almost toxic ... because of too much salts. What do you do with all that water, and how much does hydroponics really use? Is there really no way to remove to bad stuff so you can continue to use the water. Here in CA water is at a premium now because of drought. The auto pH-adjuster looks like a win to me, even at the price. The more you can automate these systems the better I assume. It is a great idea. I also like the idea of getting data online about performance. I have not done a hydro system myself yet. I tried a small scale aeroponic setup. When I move though I will be trying this out.

justgivemethetruth Hey JGMTT. Properly dealing with spent nutrient solution is a really important topic-one that I intend to devote a video to in future. If you start with high purity (ideally reverse osmosis) water in the first place then the working life of your nutrient solution is increased dramatically. It is the accumulation of micro elements that really dictate the lifespan of a nutrient solution. My advice is to dilute your spent nutrient solution 50 / 50 with tap water and use it to feed your tougher houseplants, lawn (if you have one - unsurprisingly they're not really my thing), or other containerized plants. There's no need to pour it down the drain. Yes, you could-in theory-filter and purify your nutrient solution but it would be a time-consuming and costly process getting rid of all those salts.
@justgivemethetruth
@justgivemethetruth 9 жыл бұрын
Everest Fernandez Thanks for addressing that issue. I don't know if it is solved because what are the long term results of continually adding unknown concentrations of nutrients to ground, lawns or containers ... but at least someone is thinking about it.

In the 101 video you mention diluting your pH adjuster before adding it to your solution. However, in this video you seem to be adding it straight to the solution through your doser. Are those specific brands already diluted enough to do so or did you just not mention the dilution in this video?
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 7 жыл бұрын
+David Newton Thanks for your question David. I had concerns about using undiluted pH adjusters with my doser too. After some research I discovered that the amounts of acid pumped into the system by the Bluelab pH doser were so tiny it didn't need pre-dilution, so I used the GH pH down (a blended acid product) undiluted in the doser.

I have a circulating pump and an airstone in the reservoir but I think what's happening is that there's algae growth and its changing my ppm and pH towards up
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 8 жыл бұрын
+pogos kuregyan Thanks for your question, Posos. There are three environmental factors that most commonly affect the pH of a nutrient solution (even if it isn't recirculating) - namely: 1. High air temperatures in your grow room. High temperatures favor something called "nitrate influx" in your nutrient solution. A nutrient containing mostly nitrate nitrogen will steadily raise the pH of the solution over time in most cases and vice versa for an ammonium nitrogen dominant nutrient solution. As I said, temperature has a role to play here-high temperatures favor nitrate influx and low temperatures favor ammonium influx. 2. CO2 enrichment-not relevant to your situation but I'll mention it anyway. If an air pump is used to oxygenate a reservoir, then we can expect gaseous C02 to enter the nutrient solution and a percentage of it will form carbonic acid, which will lower pH. This is especially relevant for those enriching their rooms up to 1300 - 1500 PPMs CO2. Nothing to worry about, but worth being aware of. 3. Biological growth in the nutrient solution. Algae will raise the pH: this is because the algae will absorb some of the c02 in the solution. Bacterial and fungal growth in general will lower the pH of the nutrient solution: as part of primary metabolism acids may be excreted lowering the pH. Hope that helps!

If your not recirculating, the reservoir usually drifts upwards aswell why is this?
@thomasjameson5761

You made a mistake at 5:34. You said NO3- is taken up by roots and is converted into NH3. I looked it up and found that NO3- is taken up and reduced to NH4+ by the enzyme nitrate reductase. Or am i mistaken? Do clarify.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment Shan. It's correct to say that NO3- is converted and there is more than one step in the process: NO3 first has to be converted to NO2 and not directly reduced to NH4+. I hope that, in trying to simplify for a wide audience, I haven't abused the truth in the process! I plan to delve deeper into the pathways and processes surrounding all the primary nutrients in the coming months so stay tuned! Thanks again, peace and happy growing-Everest.

Pro growers never use PH up or PH down in their nutrient reservoir. Those should only be used for testing the solution seperately.

+pogos kuregyan Your source water is 1,350 PPMs and you add nutrients to bring it up to 1,550 PPMs? Or are you referring to your water / nutrient solution's conductivity in miliesiemens?

bottom line is should I be worried about the pH going up
@Just4Growers
@Just4Growers 8 жыл бұрын
+pogos kuregyan Yes Pogos, you should readjust your rising pH daily to keep it around 6.0. Iron, for instance, becomes much less available as your pH rises above 6.0. You probably already know that iron is a key component of chlorophyl-your plants' solar panels! If you don't care of your rising pH, an iron deficiency is in the mail!

My pH starts at 6.5 and takes seven days to drift down to about 5.4-5.3. At day seven you change the water. 1 gram per watt, automatic water changes. You never adjust pH unless you are mixing a new batch of res water.

"cashions"? Is that a Cajun cation? LOL...it's pronounced CAT-ion and anions are not relatives of onions, they are pronounced AN-ion. Sorry, my biochemistry gene just spasmed and went crazy with that!

+DrValerie800 Apologies for the spasm-inducing mispronunciation. Not as bad as the time I mispronounced the word "mispronunciation" in front of a girl I was trying to impress in high school. That was really bad..... :)

+DrValerie800 One should never be afraid of mispronouncing a word because it shows that you took the personal time to read it. But I hate the thought of corrupting others with it. Truly I do. Lol.
