I took a course on ancient Egyptian history over 50 years ago at the U of Toronto with professors named Redford and another named Needler. The first names escape me now. I have retained an interest over all the intervening years, and so found your lecture. Thanks...very well done.

That was absolutely fantastic! Very honest and refreshing reframing as well, much needed!! I’ve often wondered why Egyptologists/authors on ancient Egypt feel the need to constantly gloss over literally every detail related to AE with what can only be described as nationalism, tempered by toxic positivity and wild speculation!! Please keep post more of your lectures/presentations!

Great lecture Guy. Love the lens that you took investigating a very interesting period in Ancient Egyptian history. Looking forward to the book and the detail that you can add to your perspective on the topic. Many thanks again for your precious time, to share with us on the other side of the world.

I have always read that since they had done away with all the other gods, Akhenaten felt that he and his wife had to fill the role of the fertility deities as well. That is why they portrayed themselves naked and with all their daughters.

Thanks for a very interesting talk Guy. Though I enjoy reading (and listening) about Ancient Egypt, I'm intrigued how a bunch of riverine/desert tribesmen ended up creating 2 Egyptian nations and joing them into the Ancient Egypt we know. By the way, I was also in that queue outside the British Museum in 1972.

I'm so glad somebody recognises the importance of Yuya and Thuya in the later 18th Dynasty. Now, are Mutemwiya and Ay related to them? PS: I see that building a new capital on an arid plain has become the current Pharoah's project ...

It's interesting to note the differences in opinion about power in Ancient Egypt. In a talk by Aiden Dodson also here on YT on the site of Amarna/Akhetaten, there is mentioned that there may have been a "socialism" aspect in Pharaonic Egypt.

Interesting idea that Hatshepsut adopted the kingship out of necessity to protect the throne. Most scholars describe her unfairly as a power hungry opportunist.

Not only that, but I have read that Thutmose III was running the army before Hatshepsut died. I think he appears on various reliefs with her, too. The defacement or destruction of her monuments apparently did not begin until late in Thutmose's reign, when the right of Amenhotep II to the throne had to be secured. To me this suggests that there was some sort of alternative power centre, possibly involving Hatshepsut's daughter Neferure if she was still alive.

At 44:28 I notice that the king's head is disproportionately large whereas his queen's is if anything a little small, so she has a heroic proportion whereas he looks a bit childlike and goofy. Nowadays figurative artists know that a slightly smaller than reality head gives a more dramatic appearance. I wonder if this was deliberate or a practical matter due to the hair and headdresses. To my modern eyes she cuts a much more impressive figure, but maybe it was seen differently then, with the larger male head representing more power, for instance.

Fantastic talk, and great to see the people behind the names. First class. The mic is now perfect, thanks a lot. Sorry to see some trolls who post on these videos, but looks like you can hide their messages if they get too crazy. :)

Very interesting talk, thank you so much i look forward to the next one! About the 14th of may 1338BC, (to reach back to Tin Tin) any chance the priesthood knew in advance and they built the city on purpose to show off the king's godly powers in a big public spectacle?

Love your work! Lately I have been thinking in terms of comparative civilizations. In some ways Egypt developed ahead of Greco-Roman Roman and certainly ahead of Celtic People or those of the America's. How and why? Certainly environment played a roll.

Trump reminds me of Akhenaten... not a perfect analogy at all, but the US political establishment's bigotry towards him reminds me of the Egyptian priest class taking hammers to Akhenaten's legacy.
