An unscripted off-the-cuff talk about Akhenaten and Nefertiti, based on the work for my forthcoming book. It would be impossible to cover this subject in 100 talks but these are just some thoughts that have crossed my mind while writing the book which will appear in July 2022.
The title of this book has now been revised. It will be called:
PHARAOHS OF THE SUN
HOW EGYPT'S DESPOTS AND DREAMERS DROVE THE RISE AND FALL OF TUTANKHAMUN'S DYNASTY
Regrettably, I have had to turn off the Comments facility. KZfaq now requires 2-step verification for KZfaq channel users like myself. This is incredibly tedious, largely because I have constantly to monitor the comments for the small number of viewers who abuse/misuse the facility by making inappropriate or personal comments, try to contact me about issues unrelated to the video in question sometimes in a completely unacceptable way, and there are also the robots that inject obscene or other unsuitable content. Each of these has laboriously to be deleted which means constant 2-step verification every time. So, Comments on my videos will now be permanently disabled. Sorry.

Another example of why KZfaq is one of the great gifts of this Century.

Thanx for the wonderful discussion re: Akhenaten and Nefertiti and the rest of the 18th dynasty gang! I have watched Guy many times over on Time Team and thus was well aware of his highly respected Roman expertise - but I had no clue that his interests /studies also included ancient Egypt, esp. the 18th dynasty, until I stumbled onto his YT channel. The thing that I absolutely appreciate more than anything else is his total honesty - there is no elitist dogmatism, no grand theories built in the shadows of the subjunctive, but a constant, honest, "We simply don't know" and "This is only my supposition or theory." As refreshing as a cool drink of water on a hot day. Thank you. I look forward to the book.

Thanyou so much , for so many references and as usual so many thoughtful insights into such a difficult history to comprehend from a laymans perspective. Each talk you give is much appreciated,

How strange that a civilisation so centred around the worship of the sun didn't make more of a solar eclipse.

I'm very much looking forward to your book Guy. Yet again, you present much that is thought provoking here. Without a doubt, Akhenaten still casts a long shadow all these centuries later. I've noticed many instances over the years of his continuing presence in modern culture. I don't know if you're familiar with any of Ahmed Osman's books. Some of his theories are quite fanciful, including that Akhenaten was in fact Moses and left Akhetaten to spend forty years in the wilderness with his hard core followers. I recently read Agatha Christie's 1937 play Akhenaten and I particularly love how he is depicted in Mika Waltari's 1954 novel 'Sinuhe the Egyptian - I think Waltari captures Akhenaten's 'vibe' perfectly. Also, I've never heard a wholly convincing argument as to the meaning and purpose of the Amarna art style. Many authors, from Petrie and Weigel on, seem to struggle with it and how exactly it equates with the concept of maat, which seems to have been crucial to Atenism. Now I must make room on my already crammed shelves for your forthcoming tome. Many thanks and kindest regards.

Just a minor comment about the "forty years in the wilderness". I think that "forty" was a euphemism to simply indicate an indefinitely long period of time. We today might say that we got lost and walked forever. It is not true in reality. It rained for forty days and forty nights. Ali Baaba and the forty thieves. I think forty simply is to indicate many. Just a thought.

Worker injuries might possibly be more the result of the accelerated rate of constructing Akhenataten than a deliberate policy of maltreatment.

Interested in the U that appears in Guy's pronunciation of Tutankhaten ('Tutankhuaten'). Is that because there is something ambiguous in the inscriptions?
@ClassCiv
@ClassCiv 2 жыл бұрын
Correct. Most transliterations of Egyptian names and words are ambiguous and prone to multiple readings, because there are no direct equivalents. Tutankhuaten helps distinguish the name from Tutankhamun.

@@ClassCiv Mm. Interesting -- thanks. I like the frankness about the difficulties in probing the history. It seems, from what your good self has said in these videos, that to be a historian of Egypt is also to be (more than usually) a detective as well as an explorer. And to work strenuously in joining the gaps in the dots! Enjoying your book on Roman Britain (revised edition).
