In this Video Lecture, Professor Fink reviews the mechanism of action, uses, adverse effects and differences between the Narcotic Analgesics. Morphine is presented as the prototype. Reference is made to Opiate Alkaloids, Semi-Synthetic Alkaloids, Opioid Synthetics, Partial Endorphin Agonists, Opiate Blockers, endorphins, spasmogenic effect, physical dependency, drug tolerance, Codeine, oxycodone (OxyContin; Percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin; Vicoprofen), meperidine (Demerol), tramadol (Ultram; Ultracet), naloxone (Narcan).

I wish you taught my pharmacology class in nursing school...you have been the best instructor I've had. i still remember everything I learned in your anatomy and physiology classes and i must say that it all has helped me tremendously during my nursing program. Morphine is prescribed orally - sustained release tablets are also available. Mostly used in Palliative care.

Professor Fink Thank you for your video My question is the following: you said that morphine doesn’t affect the cardiovascular system. But since it causes generalized vasodilation isn’t it suppose to decrease blood pressure ? Thank you sooo sooooo much :)

professor i'am a Dental-student from Egypt and i'm sort of struggling with biology a little bit i think its because i really never paid attention to the understanding of chemistry before and i feel i will be needing alot of chemistry along the way of dentistry can you suggest any resources or specific understandings i need to know to be able to actually understand the biology and physiology i'm about to encounter ? i really feel lost and frustrated :/ also a big thanks to you your anatomy lectures helped me alot with my general anatomy classes, Thank you for putting this knowledge online not many people do this nowadays.

i am on morphine for my chronic back pain but i don't get sleepy an i have no problems thinking when i'm in pain i have a harder time thinking cause the pain gets so bad i want to scream i was run over by my truck back when i was 19 i jumped out in front of it to stop it from going out in the main road i didn't want anyone to die but i have lived almost my whole life in pain i wish sometimes that i didn't do that but i'm glad i stopped it before it killed someone i could not live if it would of killed someone

How does morphine cause miosis?

Morphine (& other opioids) appears to cause miosis (pupillary constriction) by acting on the Oculomotor Reflex Center, increasing parasympathetic influence on the iris muscle. see: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1117427

Crude Morphine base + Acetic Anhydride = diacety morpine ( heroin ). Not VinegarVinegar is acetic acid & only 3% at thatGet your facts right Prefessor Frank.So called PROFESSOR....
