My name is Anne 😊 I'm a FINAL year PhD student at UBC. I do research in the field of drug delivery and nanomedicine. I enjoy making "a day in the life of a phd" vlogs to document my journey and share the ups and downs in grad school. I also like to make phd student advice/tips videos related to grad school! Thanks for stopping by ^^

I didn't know you opened qna on your insta, need to look you up and follow you asap. I have so many questions about phd in nanomed since I'm interested in this area though I don't have any hands on experience in this area as my specialization in my current master's programme is completely different. Always a pleasure watching your vlogs I learned a lot from you.

In order to become a pharmaceutical scientist, what are the steps? Like from college what do you study? Then after what happens? Then after that what happens? Just basically everything to become one.

Haha there are several different ways to become a pharmaceutical scientist - and it's different for everyone! I've made a couple of videos talking about this if you're interested! (1) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJ96idBe2-Dae30.html (2) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibppgNt-yrmzmmQ.html - this outlines my personal journey to getting into the PhD program. Hope these help answer your questions!

Also, what does a phd in pharmaceutical science do for you?

Again this is different for everyone. For me personally it has helped with learning about the field of nanomedicine, how to think and troubleshoot, how to do research, etc. It has also helped with finding a job that I like.

I think you made a good decision to start off in industry ;) You indeed can always go back to academia afterwards if you really would want to ;) Also: 27.000 Canadian dollars? :o DAMN! I currently get almost 49.000 euro as a 3rd year PhD (taking into account 5 years industry experience). Indeed, your prospects on that part, in industry, are looking gooooooood! Another question: how will your channel evolve/change once you've graduated and no longer need to document your journey (+ emotions ;))?
@anniochan
@anniochan 2 жыл бұрын
OMG 49K EURO A YEAR!? That's so good!! So if you have less experience do you get a lower PhD stipend? LOL good question. I have no idea what it will evolve to yet! I've spoken to the company that I will work at about my channel and they like the idea of letting me continue to some extent. But ofc confidentiality etc. will be challenging so we will see! What would you like to see it evolve into?
@Biomeducated
@Biomeducated 2 жыл бұрын
@@anniochan Wait, maybe we're jumping the gun here. I'm talking gross salary, so net would be 32.5K a year. maybe your stipend is net? :D Indeed, a fresh 1st year PhD will get less, something like 2100 euro per month. Nice that you already discussed with your company! Maybe you can give updates on the latest developments in nanomedicine or something? :D

@@dlvivlviv 27k is before tuition expenses, so it's actually a similar net income (we used the Chem department as a reference when we negotiated higher stipends several years back). UBC could definitely treat its trainees better 🙄
