PhD Student Advice: PhD Thesis Writing Tips that I Wish Someone Told Me

I finished writing my thesis and sent it to my academic committee. There are a few tips that I want to share with you that will make your life easier when you get to that writing stage. This is for EVERYONE in grad school, no matter what stage you're in. Yes, even you, Mr/Ms "i-just-started-grad-school-so-i-don't-have-to-think-about-my-thesis-yet". JUST YOU WAIT.
Topics covered:
- Manuscript-based thesis vs. Traditional thesis
- How to use a reference manager like Mendeley to organize all your literature
- Figures and charts
- Keeping different versions of data, graphs, charts, etc.
- Organization of your data
- Backing up your stuff in case your laptop decides to die (like mine)
- There's a thing called a DOWNLOADABLE THESIS TEMPLATE. Look for that before you start writing.
- Helpful formatting tips using Microsoft Word (that I believe you probably know but was completely new and groundbreaking to me)

Worth learning LaTeX as well. A lot of the templating, citing, etc, can be done on the fly.

I used to use Mendeley and then it completed crashed on me and I never went back but now you’ve inspired me to give it a second chance! Thanks for the useful tips as per usual

Thanks, I really didn't know about manuscript-based thesis (paper or non-paper ). I did my M.sc thesis in traditional way and I didn't know there were other types. thanks, you made another Q for me to ask Supervisors in admission Ph.D. interview.

Damn!! You did a lot of work doing things manually. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I didn't know about the MS Word feature I think it's in their latest version of the MS Office which I don't have bit neither do I have the licensed version either...xD

I'm thinking of doing a Psychology PHD in the future (that's if I have a chance) at UBC sooo hopefully the advice here applies to my subject :D

What universities can I accept and be less expensive and that provide training in my specialization?
