You should watch the concert as a whole. Phil made an introduction to each and every song in the language of the country that he performed at. This is a serious song and that's why he performed it seriously. At every concert he asked the audience for a donation for the homeless. It was an amazing thing to bring this message to the people at this time.

Phil Collins is best known as the drummer/singer of the rock band Genesis in the 70's & for his solo career. He has had so many great hits such as "In The Air Tonight", "I Don't Care Anymore", "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)", "One More Night", "Sussudio", "Take Me Home", "Two Hearts", "A Groovy Kind Of Love", "I Wish It Would Rain Down" etc. "Another Day In Paradise" is a great song showcasing the plight of the homeless.

One of Phil Collins' most memorable compositions and it became a massive hit in 1989 from his album 'But seriously'... the song was everywhere in 1990. Phil Collins, like many stars of the day, contributed a song that helped put the spotlight on the problem of homelessness ... not just in America but around the world... Michael Jackson recorded the song 'Man in the mirror'... Richard Marx did the song 'Children of the night'... etc. The plight of homelessness has no easy solutions... the song was basically saying that those of us who have a home and a living r enjoying 'another day in paradise'... while others who r less fortunate are suffering another day in hell... But even those of us who see the suffering and pain firsthand can do little - even spare change and alms r a drop in the bucket... U can only provide a momentary relief, but the situation of these people is untenable because they have no income or jobs (or they have jobs that don't pay enough) ... many suffer from medical issues or mental problems, while others are afflicted w/ addictions and burn whatever they can on drugs... In my case, I was homeless after being unemployed and unable to make wages because of a serious health issue... I'm still not clear yet from that situation even now. The focus should also be on refugees who are fleeing violence and conflicts... or have been driven out of their homes. They flee to foreign countries and hope for an opportunity to make a living for themselves or their families, and have to face violence from border patrols and even the public that doesn't want them there... I know what that is like. There should be a more aggressive approach to making housing affordable and employment available... Or giving refugees the opportunity to prove themselves in the economy... Not everyone can be helped... but to help those (especially children) who need help is something we should all make an effort to be charitable towards.

This song is about homelessness so he may have seemed a bit somber after performing. Also the period before this album and after took a toll on him because he was everywhere. From Genesis biggest singles album and his own solo material, as well as producing and playing with other artists. He did not take a longer break that he may have needed. But it led to the But Seriously album which is one of his best. 😊😊

The official video of this song is amazing and a MUST watch. This was a good selection. I too appreciate the live performances, particularly for Genesis and Phil's solo work. This Berlin concert is fabulous! Mr. Collins is amazing in being able to create the same sound so exactly as compared to the recording. He has such quality and attention to detail. This was just after the Berlin Wall came down, so the vibe was special. You can feel it when you watch the video of the whole concert. You will also see that he is NOT indifferent. The crowd applauds for an extended period and you can see he is somewhat embarrassed. Being very honestly humble, he is uncomfortable with adulation. He also speaks (reads phonetically from his notes) in German, asking people to donate what they can as they exit the concert, to be distributed to local homeless shelters. He did this everywhere he performed this moving song (often in the native language) and I understand personally matched the donations!

I always thought that the one word that best describes Phil Collins is “mellow”, “chill” would be a close second. I’m not talking about his music so much as his personality. Sorta like he’s somebody’s dad who just so happens to be a world famous musician.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I think how humans, you, me, all of us, pretend to care. Mankind’s greed runs deep. While visiting friends on the coast recently I saw a huge yacht with a helicopter parked on the bow. My friend told me it belongs to a billionaire. To my way of thinking if a person has that much wealth and can ignore our brothers and sisters living on the streets, then that person has failed as a human being. Just to illustrate, if you spent $100,000 a day it would take 10 days to spend a million dollars. It would take 27 years to spend a billion.

For future reactions of him i recommend you his live performance singing the song of another great (Stevie Wonder): Uptight (Everything's Alright) from the tour (Going Back live 2010). You will love the performance. You should also react to the official Genesis video with Phil singing the song. called: "No son of mine" is a magnificent and powerful lyric and song.

You’re absolutely right, Biss. The tune or refrain from this song is totally recognizable and resonates in your head. I’m thinking I first heard it on the hit show Miami Vice. Also agreed he was a bit laid back in this performance, but I think that is his basic style. Sadly in 2000 he lost hearing in one ear and later had nerve neck trouble which impaired his drumming. Definitely, one of the greats esp considering his time with Genesis. 💕

Musically it's a simplistic song, actually wears on me, but the whole point of the song is the content and that he choose to use his abilities to bring awareness to an important issue which is seldom done. The way he does the vocals are subtle and is easier to appreciate his delivery in the studio version.

It's probably a good thing you went with the live version this time because this song was about how we're apathetic to the poor, homeless, and suffering in the world because it's gotten so common, and it's so overwhelming that we feel embarrassed that we don't know what to do about it, so, selfishly, it's easier to just ignore it, so we don't have to be confronted with the pain of others, and also feel bad ourselves. So the song is trying to bring attention to it, so we are confonted with it, and maybe we'll care more about trying to do something about it, instead or pretending it's not happening for our own benefit, but the original video, while very good, is also much more depressing. I mean, by not watching the depressing version, that's kind of the point of the song, and by watching the happier version, we're doing the very thing the song is accusing of us, but knowing you, you definitely would've been a lot more bummed out by the original video.
@bobsmith9936

Hi, I fully disagree the official video shows the real meaning of the song. here we just see we'll off people enjoying life, in the video homeless people don't. some subjects wars, aggressions towards women etc. you DON'T sugarcoat the reality. that's why the original video was made 🤷‍♂️Biss I've seen him twice, he's energetic, but in this song, due to the subject, you don't shimy shimy lol

@@chippie-7592 Ha! Well, initially, I pointed out the meaning of the song being about the homeless and all, and the fact that people choose to ignore it, and the actual video is much sadder for it, then I sort of jokingly pointed out that by watching the happier version of the song, we are inadvertently ignoring the problem in the exact way that the song implies. Don't overthink it.

While I DO love this song from Phil, and it is possibly one of the best songs that actually shows off his range as a singer, not to mention how wonderful he is as both a song-writer and a musician overall.... Well, it still isn't my FAVORITE Phil Collins song, which is "I Don't Care Anymore". That song just gets me in a "mood" that can only be described as "Not going to take any c**p off of anyone". Live aid was 1985, and Phil was still riding high on his success, and his energy was probably more in its youthful exuberance, but as this one is 1990, a lot can happen in just 5 years, let alone 15, in show business - it's exhausting and with age it's not easy to keep up that happy and upbeat energy. And by that time, he has probably played so many songs so many time that it literally becomes "boring" for him, but he has to play them cos they are the hits the fans love and come to hear live. So Phil was probably just pacing himself and not getting too wound up, which can often come across as "stuck up" or whatever. He's probably just trying to get through the show so he can rest a spell before he has to pack up and get on the bus or plane to the next show and do it all over again. I kinda had a wee taste of that just in with karaoke circuit. I had people bug me to do certain songs, and sometimes I'd do them but only if I was in the mood or found it to be a challenge (having not done it before). Real rock stars do not get that luxury of choice. But there was ONE song I did just as a joke, and it went over so well - TOO well - with the crowd that it became my most requested - Barbie Girl by Aqua. Why? Cos I did BOTH voice myself, switching on a dime from the deep "Come on Barbie Let's go party" to the high-pitched helium voice of "Ah ah ah yeah" and singing in that helium voice for the whole song. At first I happily obliged - give the people what they want, right? But before long ,I got sick of it, and started refusing to do it, especially after someone had noted "Yeah, you don;t sound like you;re really into it anymore, and it's starting to weaken". So I retired it. But after enough time, I would dig it out once in a while, but only if my mood was such. I had actually found a new "crowd pleaser" in the from of a holiday double header : You're A Mean One Mr Grinch, immediately followed by The Chipmunk Christmas Song. So you got the deep baritone vocal of Grinch and then the ultra-helium vocals of Chipmunks. Since it was kind of reserved for the holidays I never had to worry about it "getting tiresome" like Barbie Girl did, but that didn't mean I wouldn't do it off-season if it was warranted (by public demand or my mood or whatever). So I can sort of empathize with these performers, cos if some rinky-dink karaoke routines can become tiresome, I can only imagine the magnitude of actual professional performance,s that are repeated night after night for months on end with the stresses of travel to boot.

He had a straight reaction after the song was done and didn't want to over shine the song considering what the song is about. It is about the homeless and the contrast of our lives compared to theirs. Just so you know, Phil is generally full of energy and comedic in a way on stage when it is appropriate. Funny you only watched him on piano because that is rare being that he is primarily a drummer turned front man starting with his old band Genesis. When Phil goes to the piano it means it's going to be a slow ballad with deep meaning which is opposite of most his music.

Phil's energy comes when he has a set of Drums in front of him, if you want a bit more drive, In The Air Tonight (Live), if you haven't already, no doubt you would have heard the beat somewhere. This song isn't a hype song, it may have been eurly in the show also?

Try react to Genesis live shows, Bisscute. Phil bring to us a complex voice interpretation and as well drummer. Sorry about my English. I'm from Sao Paulo - Brazil and never study the language. Hope you understand me

The video for this song is very powerful. The title of the song itself is a provocation for social inequality in the world. What is this Paradise where few have much and many have little?

Radio stations have played this song to death. And beyond that, the fans of 70s Genesis have a hard time watching Phil in his soft/chart phase, when you remember him as an awsome drummer, playing progressive rock and jazzfusion with his sideproject Brand X and also as singer in Genesis after Peter Gabriel had left. If you want to listen to one of the best drum live performances listen to Dance on a volcano/Los Endos of Genesis Seconds Out live album. And if you love this song, but want to hear another version, then listen to Liv Warfield - former member of Prince' band - which she just recorded in 2023 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hc-af6ih286qonU.html
