I am a 71 year old Ohioan and have been listening to Phil since his days with Glass Harp. I walked the same journey of faith as him so his music has been a part of my life for many decades. He is truly an amazing guitar player. When I need to slow down and seek introspection I put on Wind and Wheat and his other acoustic masterpieces. It always brings me back to where I need to be….at peace with the world and myself.

Last time I saw him in concert, he asked for audience response what he should sing. I was close enough for him to hear: "LOVE BROKE THROUGH"!!! I said it two or three times until he finally played it. Afterward, I caught him and said I requested LOVE BROKE THROUGH. He responded: "Did I do o.k.?" What a humble gentleman. I loved his music as a teenager and STILL do!

I thought that all things good come from God? Does it only count if it has the "Christian" label on it? I listened to Phil back in the late 80"s and 90"s before my life took some bad turns. Ive "wandered" for years but his cds stayed in my collection and now I"m coming back to it and it is speaking to me and pointing me back to where I belong. Give Phil a break , some of you. And who doesn't like the Beatles?

@@michaelcampana865 Who needs to give Phil a break? I have never heard anyone say a bad word about the man. And anyone who is worth their salt knows he is one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. And while l am not necessarily a hardcore religion guy, l have absolutely no problem with anyone who has a lifelong faith and conviction. Phil always says God plays through him, who am l to say that is not true?

He sure nailed that one. Very difficult song to play lead guitar and make it sound close to George/Eric’s original. Phil was awesome and made all of us Beatle’s fans proud. 😀🎸🎤🎶

I accompanied my wife to her church one day because she said Phil Keaggy was a featured speaker. He proceeded to play some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard...and it was just him and a drum machine. Dazzling! His rendition here of "While My Guitar" is a great example why many of his contemporaries hold him in such high esteem. He is truly a remarkable and outstanding musician.

It's called fingerstyle -- absolutely plays one part with each hand. Plus percussion sometimes. SOMEtimes when he needs even more parts, he uses a looper. But he gets incredible multipart sound with just him and an acoustic guitar, no fancy electronics. A long time ago he was with our group for a weekend retreat... just Phil and his guitar. A gift.

I'm 68 years old, and I have been following Phil since His days with Glass Harp, and I have been absolutely blessed by his testimony of Faith in Jesus Christ as well! He is without a doubt the greatest guitarist I have EVER heard, and I really believe he is the Greatest of All Time as well! I have seen him live in concert, and I'm absolutely amazed at his Talent!! I have never heard anyone who can play 3 songs at once before I saw him do it at Knotts Berry farm several years ago, and I continue to be amazed by him and his guitar!! God bless you, Phil Keaggy! I will see you soon!

First heard the Hendrix-Cavett-Keaggy version of the story in 1975 at Kent State. If nothing else, the story has early origins. Interestingly, it was in that college town, Kent, Ohio, that Glass Harp developed much of their material, sound and Phil's talent, being the house band at a little bar called JB's. Glass Harp was one of three house bands with a monster-talented guitarist in succession there at JB's: Phil with Glass Harp, Pacific Gas & Electric with Glenn Schwarz, and the James Gang with Joe Walsh. Artistically, Kent was blessed before, during and after the time of the infamous shootings.

Just saw Phil last night - 65 years young and better than ever! What a treat! The whole Jimi Hendrix comment thing is an urban legend. Still I have to think that if Hendrix had lived long enough to know Phil he definitely would have made a comment like those floating around the web.

Siberdoug...Jimi Hendrix DID say it...It's NOT an urban legend...He said it on the Mike Douglas show in 70' or 71'...Mike asked him what it's like being the greatest guitarist in the world...Jimi's response as he was putting out a cigarette in an ashtray was to laugh and ask Mike if he listened to Phil Keaggy lately...It's on KZfaq...There you go, no more urban legend...Hope this helps...

Gabriel Davidson, not true. I'n not even aware of Hendrix performing on the Mike Douglas show. Jimi did answer the question on the Dick Cavett show. Spoiler alert, it wasn't Keaggy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ab-TY6-UuLqZk5c.html The confusion likely arose as Phil's band Glass Harp recorded at Electric Lady studios. Phil even talks about his relationship with Jimi. Spoiler alert, there never was one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fKmDgMWop7zSm40.html Keaggy is an amazing and under appreciated guitarist. Phil has stated the whole ‘Hendryx’ urban myth is entirely false. Look it up on You Tube. Phil is asked the question directly and he answers it likewise. When pushed further about who he thinks is the ‘best’, he mentions Django Reinhardt, the Jazz great Joe Pass and 50,000 guitarists you have never heard of. Interestingly, he cited no current ‘great’ guitarist. The likes of Al Dimeola, Steve Vai, Ingwie, Guthrie Govan, Satriani, Tommy Emmanuel evidently did not come to Phil’s mind!

Jimmy Hendrix didn't say to Johnny Carson "ask Phil Kheaggy". Urban legend

It wasn't Johnny Carson; it was another talk-show host, Michael Douglas. Douglas asked Jimi "What's it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" and Jimi said, "I don't know. Ask Rory Gallagher." Google it. Amazing how people can be convinced that some things are true just because they've heard it somewhere!

I came across this account by someone... "I was in Colorado Springs, CO a couple of years ago and went to a second-hand record store looking for some Glass Harp on vinyl (still looking, BTW--if anybody has it). The owner--a guy who had that "I've been around through the sixties and seventies" scraggly beard and ponytail and adidas t-shirt look about him--said, "Phil Keaggy and Glass Harp [I never mentioned Phil's name when I asked him about Glass Harp], their name hasn't come up in a long time. I remember seeing the Dick Cavett show where Jimi Hendrix said about Phil that Phil was...'the best up-and-coming guitarist right now.'" I thought, hmmm, that's a bit more realistic, "best up-and-coming guitarist," and that was the first time I actually heard the story from somebody who said that they actually saw the show. He went on to talk about a bootleg he had somewhere of a Glass Harp show in New York somewhere."

Why is it there is no evidence other than claims that Hendrix mentioned Phil? Some say a Rolling Stone article , others Dick Cavet interview, but no evidence. Not that it matters. Back in '78, I was sitting in my car during break at work listening to "How the West was One" and a coworker came up to my car and asked me what the "church music" I was listening to. I said it was Phil Keaggy. A little later, this guy comes up to my car, who acted like he was on drugs, and asked, "did you say Phil Keaggy?" I said yes. He said that Jimi Hendrix was asked how it felt to be the greatest guitarist in the world, and Hendrix answered that he didn't know, go ask Phil Keaggy. I didn't know what to think. It was bizarre. But even in '78, someone non-Christian claimed to have heard this.

Phil, himself, says the story isn't true. He says "That's just like the one where someone asks Chet Atkins how it feels to be the shortest guitar player in the business and he says, I don't really know. Go ask Phil Keaggy." Just don't get why who is the best so important to people. Just enjoy the beauty, the talent, the tune, the melody and if there is any at all, the message.

So let me get this straight, jn wd... if the song doesn't mention Jesus or is written by someone who doesn't properly wear a Christian t-shirt, the person who plays the song thereafter, no matter who it may be or why he or she plays it, is serving "the world" and not "the Lord?" I'm truly amazed by this. Does it also stand to follow that an organic chemist who is a professing Christian is using his or her talent to serve the world because the field was invented/discovered by Linus Pauling, an avoid atheist? Or is he alright if he only uses the parts of organic chemistry that are biblical? What is it about the song "While my guitar gently weeps" that bothers you? What of the song is antithetical to Christendom? Or is it merely that George Harrison, a man who also wrote "My Sweet Lord" as a devotion to Krishna, wrote the song? Can you see why it's really hard to take people like you seriously?

I seem to recall something about a light shinning on a hill and not being covered up, something something in the world, not of the world. Maybe my Bible is different, but Jesus dined with the tax collectors in mine. Did that make him self-serving? I think it's about time you actually matured in the Lord and stopped being a superficial baby. It was the pharisees that were worried about how clean the glass was on the outside and didn't care at all about the inside, the same pharisees that put Jesus on the cross. Or we could go here, let each man work out his own salvation with fear and trembling. Or we could go straight to the source, get the moat out of your own eye before worrying about the speck in your brother's eye. It seems to me that you either don't know what Christianity is really all about or chose to only accept your own beliefs as law. Sorry, but that's not the Christ that I've read about and chose to follow.
