Philadelphia Orchestra Performs "La Marseillaise"

Prior to concerts on Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, The Philadelphia Orchestra performed the national anthem of France, "La Marseillaise," led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

La Révolution didn’t help you. It was Louis XVI and the Ancien Régime that, in funding American independence, pretty much bankrupted France. And then the Marseillaise-singing frenchies chopped off good Louis’ head. Who are you thanking precisely?

To see Americans playing our national anthem in public and making a standing ovation is a strong symbolic gesture. As a Frenchman, I am touched. This compensates for the Frenchbashing of the Bush years.

I had been in Paris only a fortnight before: a colleague at the Collège de France had organized a week-long conference in honor of the anniversary of a book I had written. It was glorious fall weather, and I stayed on the Left Bank, a short walk from the Shakespeare & Co. bookshop. Two weeks after my return, Islamist terrorists carried out massacres in the City of Light. France survived, thank God. But I did not. La Marseillaise for nearly two and a half centuries has been the clarion call to justice for the oppressed of the world. I've no hope for my own life. But I do hope the downfall and destruction of this system will come, and Americans may live in genuine liberty, equality, and fraternity.

People can talk cynical politics all they want but there is a cemetery in Philadelphia where French men are buried who lost their lives helping Americans gain freedom just as there are cemeteries in France with American men who did the same. People need to acknowledge the essential.

Honestly, this is one the best renditions I've ever heard of our national anthem. Perfect balance between symphonic orchestration (with strings) and a military fanfare sound. Just perfect.

Did the tempo seem a little slow? or does everyone play it just a tad fast? Hard for me to tell since I'm perhaps over-aware of so many pieces of music being played too fast, an easy fault for any orchestra trying to convey strength in a piece.

This anthem (officially since 1879) is first a song of war written for the french revolutionary armies fighting on eastern border(1792).It was the begining of the last great military epic since the roman legions .The new french flag floated over almost all main towns of Europe from Lisbon to Moscow,until 1815.German army also conquered Europe but not in the name of Liberty,human rights and the nazi flag doesn't exist anymore.If we think about the 1.4 million french who died between 1792 and 1815, we have to respect this anthem.

Il est spécial d'entendre La Marseillaise joué par un orchestre américain et de constater que tant les musiciens que les spectateurs se lèvent respectueusement pour écouter et attendent la fin de l'hymne pour applaudir généreusement. L'orchestration est excellente et la répartition entre les cordes, les bois et les cuivres font en sorte qu'il s'agit d'une très belle version.

When I was about 8, my piano teacher (also the organist at our church) invited me to sit down at the massive pipe organ console in our church and play something. This is what I chose. One of the most emotional national anthems ever written.
