2023 Iron Horse Rambles with

The Iron Horse Rambles returned in 2023 with Reading & Northern's recently restored #2102 steam locomotive. She is a class T-1 4-8-4 "Northern" that underwent a 6-year, $2.4 million dollar restoration and is now in her second year of operation since.
I chased the August 13th Ramble in its entirety. I started my day at the Port Clinton steam shop to catch 2102 travel to Reading Outer Station to hook up to the excursion train. After a 2 1/2 hour trip that included a passenger stop in Port Clinton, they turned the entire train around on the Glen Onoko wye. This was the first time 2102 turned the train without diesel assist. After that I chased the train back to Reading and caught the end-of-the day events including SD50M #5049 pulling 2102 out of the station to return to Port Clinton.

Thanks, Bill! I'm glad to hear you and others enjoyed this video. I was indeed disappointed because I ended up with a fair number of unusable shots, others that were subpar, and a few locations I missed entirely. It's normal on a chase to have one or two blunders, but this one had quite a few more. It was still a fun day, though I think I put a lot of pressure on myself to make the chase epic since it's my only one this year. I'll be working on tomorrow's excursion, and I'm very much looking forward to that whole different experience.

Great video as usual. My highlight was the wheel slippage at Port Clinton next to freshly painted 2023. Thanks again for allowing me to ride along that day. Great memory for me.

I really hope that the 2102 can turn the excursion around at the Jim Thorpe wye without diesel assistance become a normal thing, it proves that 2102 dont need assistance when it comes to that wye. I hope to see 2102 someday.

They turned 2102 without diesel assist again on the 9/3 Ramble, so I'm thinking this is going to be the new normal. Hope you do get to see 2102 someday; she's quite impressive!

Nice catch you did. I was at East Mahanoy Jct after catching it from river rd crossing. Some key events I missed, but it’s a good learning for me to go back to the R&N. Even the NRFF I caught as well.

Nice catches. Would love to see the 2100 with the 2102 on a double header when the 2100 is finished. That would be awesome. I see they are converting the 2100 to an oil burner.

Thanks, Michael! I was disappointed to see that 2100 is being converted to an oil burner, but I did watch their video explaining why. It will enable 2100 to travel to other railroads, making a doubleheader with 2102 a real possibility. Hoping we see that for sure!

i'll be riding the sept 2nd ramble jamie for my birthday. my birthday is really tomorrow but im still riding because it's a cool way to celebrate. awesome video as always. i really liked the sequence of the conductor telling the crew when to stop on the scanner. that was really cool. i also liked watching 2102 shove thru the wye on her own. she sounded great in reverse and definitely had no trouble doing it on her own. hopefully like you said maybe this will be a new normal, maybe not. but it certainly was cool to watch and listen to.

Happy birthday! And riding the Ramble is a great way to celebrate, even if it's a day after. Glad you enjoyed the video and some of the unique aspects of the excursion that I caught. I'm going to be working on tomorrow's Ramble, that'll be my first in that role. I am curious to see whether she goes through the wye unassisted again, I'm guessing she will. Interestingly the crew gets to stay on board for the turning at the wye which will also be a unique experience. Have fun on your ride!

it was great meeting you too jamie. i had an awesome time riding saturday. i just can never get enough of 2102's shotgun exhaust. the best exhaust of any steam locomotive ive ridden behind in 35 years. you and the rest of the crew really do a great job making these trips special for everyone. thank you very much again. @@JamieMakin

Jamie, new subscriber, and I want to comment on your narration at the end of your excellent video. No matter how well the finished product, there are ALWAYS ways you can second guess what happens. You had no control over idiot drivers and the traffic that kept you from getting to the station on time. You had no control over the JERK who saw you were shooting and still put his camera in the middle of your shot at the wye so he could get HIS shot. As a photographer since middle school, your focus is great, your depth of field makes one think they are looking out a window at your location, your sound is excellent for not being there. The only thing missing is the vibration of the wheels driving on the rails and the sound resonating off your body. Your doing a great job for the hobby and make me want to take a trip to Pennsylvania to ride a ramble behind 2102 through that country. Awesome job.

Thanks so much for your kind words! I've been glad to hear from people such as yourself who enjoyed the video very much despite me being pretty hard on myself about it. And I appreciate you pointing out a lot of the things I did well on it. 2102 is truly an amazing piece of machinery, and the area that RBMN's tracks run is the perfect playground for her. I truly hope you get a chance to travel to experience 2102 for yourself one of these days. You would definitely enjoy it whether you decide to go for a ride or stand trackside to watch.

My tentative plan is to chase it that day, but I won't know for sure until l get my work schedule and coordinate a few other things with someone that day. Enjoy your ride! That should be right around peak fall colors.

Thanks, Ken! I have not heard anything about 2100/250 coming to Reading & Northern, but it would be absolutely epic if they do! I know the 2100 crew has visited RBMN during some of 2102's runs, so it's always possible.
