I covered the magnificent movie and cartoon, but what about the deeper meaning behind it all. Tron covered concepts of artificial intelligence and what it means to be human. How do we define what is alive?

I think the 1982 movie also had an interesting premise. It mostly revolved around the programs of the original Encom 511 System seeing their Users/Programmers as their gods. In essence their lives play out a Greek pantheon type scenario, where a much looser and younger Kevin Flynn comes down from the heavenly realm of normal life to help the earthly beings of the Encom system. Much to the reluctant surprise of Tron, Yori, and Ram, the godlike character of Flynn is just so laid back and normal and sort of shatters their view of the Users being almighty beings with a special plan. There was also a CLU character in the first movie but he died really early, also written by Flynn but this time to "sort out" his bank statements and phone bills (iykwim) and CLU in both movies is really just if Flynn wasn't adaptive the way he is. So Clu is meant to do what Flynn commands but takes it to the point of dying, and then in Legacy of course Clu does what Flynn wants again but takes it to the point of trying to bring an army to the real world, maybe a jump, but still the same folly. Since there were no ISOs in the first, I think it helps build exactly what the relationship is between the programs and the Users, especially since in Tron Legacy, the programs are just meant to be apart of the Grid and have one creator, while in Tron, each couple or so programs has a User that they embody the reflection and spirit of. Clu carries out Flynn's under the table sneaky fun stuff, Tron protects the system and hates the MCP like Alan does, Ram... well we don't see Ram's user but he embodies a friendly financial helper according to his opening line, Sark embodies Dillenger's maintenance of his power and order (but also his reliance on the MCP), Yori embodies Laura's scientific and romantic side, Dumont embodies the religious way Walter thinks about the connection between Program and User, and of course the MCP embodies a faceless all powerful nobody because he has no User, but he doesn't have the resourcefulness and the divergent thinking of a User. Which is where it can really be tied back to the new movie, because the ISOs are alot like the MCP in many ways, they think like Users, they have abilities (almost) like Users, they have no User that created them, but they're not like the MCP because they have divergent thinking like Users.

I feel like death and things that come with death like decomposing is what makes life. Once your cells stop producing and they break down I feel like that's when life ends and so does your body and who you were. That's why I think it's interesting that we can give objects or robots that look like humans human like emotions but they can't technically decompose or die. Obviously there is some holes in that idea because you can break something down till it's nothing so would that be the same thing as decomposing?

I've read a paper some time ago about how some people think it's dumb to humanize vegetative life as they aren't active agents, but proves a point on how applicable it is to describe humanity like inactive plant agents. So it formed a certain philosophy for me on how to view human "life" and human "intelligence." All of our thought, emotion, memory and intelligence is just chemical reactions in our brains. Our body's movements are just responses to these reactions. The feeling of joy/catharsis we get when we see characters in a movie beat the bad guy is not too different from when a mouse eats cheese. Nothing is "alive." We're all just chemical reactions and carbon-based structures. Products of physics arranged in a way that it calls itself "life." My guess is that ISOs are as alive as humans, but the question becomes whether or not humans are actually "alive." Edit: forgot a word

I was vegan for several years but it has been shown that plants are alive and feel pain so maybe I shouldn't eat animals OR plants. What does that leave? Salt and water. What is life? The number of examples keeps growing. What is intelligence? It seriously depends on where you draw the line and you can draw it almost anywhere. What is consciousness? I think I am so maybe that means I'm conscious, but I'm not at all convinced that anyone or anything else is unless they tell me so, and even then I'm skeptical. I've found the Schroedinger's Cat analogy cropping up an awful lot lately. Do I have enough food? Maybe yes, maybe no. Won't know 'til I look. Will my car start this morning? Won't know 'til I try and there's no point in putting that off and just guessing.

To say that nothing is "alive" is simply to have no distinction in language between the capabilities of instances of alive, sentient phenomena, and the absence of such phenomena. Describing the physical laws operating across some or all instances of alive sentient phenomena does nothing to increase or decrease, or entirely eliminate the possibility for there to be such a distinction.

The creator Steven Lisberger has talked quite a bit about the philosophy behind Tron. The 20th Anniversary edition DVD has some extras and commentary where he delves into this. What is missing in this discussion is the idea that the real world and the digital world intersect--people have their RL selves and their digital selves, and vice-versa. The world of TRON is the space where those two worlds interact. We see this in the opening sequence immediately when a light cycle racer is blown to bits, and an arcade player is simultaneously playing against Sark in that game. We see that TRON, Yori, RAM, Dumont, and Sark all have their real-world components, and look very much like their users to Kevin, to the point where he confuses Yori with Lora and even kisses her. This RL social act is not known in the computer world, so TRON is taken aback but says "nice" when Yori returns the gesture. Something in the real-world spills over into the digital, in a place where the two worlds intersect. The MCP is destroyed, while at the same time so is Ed Dillinger's career and livelihood. The grid is free, and we see beacons of light shine all around, while in the transition to end-credits, we see the lights of the city of cars transporting to and from where they need to be, similar to the busy information highway of the digital world we see in TRON. I'm a bit disappointed this theme, which is the creator's main point, is not driven home in this video. Thumbs up, though, as I appreciate when the "kids" jump in to talk about things I enjoyed when I was a kid.

Honestly this is a similar philosophy to that of Digimon Tamers, and maybe Datasquad. The second one is a lot fuzzier in my mind than Tamers. The biggest distinction between the two is that Digimon will always be digital no matter the world they're in and that Digimon are influenced by the humans in their environment, unlike ISOs which can become flesh and also are influenced by other humans the same way a non digital person is.

I think that in order to define life you have to first lay out what constitutes being alive. Things like needing to be fed, giving nutrients back to the ecosystem somehow, ability to breed. And then you need to decide what isn't life. Does being a simulation break your definition of life? Well humans exist in Tron, so they must be alive when they're there, right? Maybe? Maybe you're a simulation when in Tron, but alive in the real world. Same goes for ISOs.

Defining life isn’t supposed to be easy. Most definitions essentially boil down to “how similar to humans is this ‘thing’” and I think limits us to the idea of life within our understanding. Life as we know it ranges from single bacterium and algae cells to octopi and Venus fly traps to, of course, humans. Obviously biologists have lots of criteria for what it takes for a ‘creature’ to be alive (usually including the ability to reproduce, to adapt the stimuli in real time, and to take in resources like ‘food’, water, and energy) but even then there’s still debate over whether viruses are considered “alive” or organisms at all. But I think it’s very telling that most sci-fi and sci-fantasy media with ‘alien’ or other “life forms” usually have the good guys (at least eventually) coexist with and/or accept these beings while the bad guys reject and destroy (or “kill”) them. So I think our definition of life really does tie strongly to what we can empathize with. And since everyone empathizes to slightly different degrees and in different ways, the debate continues on.

Sentience is the standard of true conscious life, though ignoring what it means for something to be sentient there are many things that are alive such as trees. Even the Programs, however arguable their sentience is with the involvement of purpose-built programming, are still alive within the Grid. The ISOs are probably the difference between being alive and being sentient, though then again Programs have displayed self-awareness in at least most occasions.

How intelligent does one have to be to be considered alive? My opinion: Intelligent enough to comprehend what it has learned and apply it; in short: it isn’t static but is continuing to learn and grow no matter how long it lives What needs to make it human? My opinion: A soul and a spirit, being birthed from another human What makes a human a human is the birth of it from a female egg No matter what someone may say to me it dosent change anything that they were birthed and they are not a mistake of that If it isn’t birthed by natural means(conception into pregnancy) then it isn’t human(side note: children who are made via a tube of sperm and is then injected into a female egg is still human as the sperm comes from a male so it still counts) Flint however made the Grid which makes him the creator but the Grid made the ICOs so in all technicality he is a god to them since he made the creation that created them which in turn makes them an A.I of sorts

The laser in Tron Legacy has four chambers, each for storing the basic building blocks of matter, or augmenting it when there's degradation of the energy to matter recombination. The chambers are for carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, the basic building blocks of organic life. This is described in the making of book, around the prop work and how the design of the digitising laser came about. I think this idea doesn't sit well once Cora is shown in the real world and thus isn't elaborated on/cut. Ultimately, Legacy was trying to say something about the issues of the time it was made, Snowdon, WikiLeaks. Should all information be free? Flynn gave speeches about this new age of digital freedom, as did Clu. Both desired this freedom from being trapped in a system. Steven Lisberger himself retreated into his backyard Yurt to shun technology. Isos are just an anlogy for us homosapiens, we also spontaneously emerged from a complex system. Biological jazz.

First off, life as you use it, a substantialized adjective in the way of Aristotle's Categories, that which is said-off something (a body, human) but its not in it (as substrate), basically a predicate (like 3rd grade school sentences studies of subject and predicate). And the problem with Life, as this class of word and its usage, is that by definition it would always feel weird to talk about it in a vacuum, as opose to talk about living things, although living things would also have the same fate were we to start questioning it. I like Eric Smith's concept of life, as phase processes, starting from the krebs inorganic cycle, yes that's life for me, when it encompass all adjacent, uniform or not, linear or not, but cohesive steps or moments of different scale and form, up to the whole Biosphere as life pregnant. It is elusive, and anomalous in your garden variety of hard science, but its a workable one, OTOH "What is life?" by Schrödinger and the latest edition of Curtis biology still don't define life (it's impossible, not very difficult)

The series hasn't been officially canceled, they were still hoping to make more, but with the lackluster success of Tron Legacy, many thought any chance of new episodes were non existent. Now with a third movie in the works, who knows, this may garner the interest needed to create a second season. Sure it's eight years later, but you never know.

I'm wondering what Quorra becomes when she comes into the real world...is she a biological human with matching physicality? Is she like the Ilia-Probe from ST:TMP, a human body made with machine parts that recreate human physicality? I'm really curious...

This is one of the topics of sci-fi that I've tought less about, but for me, nothing is alive. Consciousness is just a very advanced program, and if we could see the "source code" of how tought is processed, people would be as predictable as an AI opponent in a video game.

To me, being 'alive' means being able to feel humen emotions and to feel empathy for others.
@andrewlance3898

Does that mean psychopaths - that is, people who do not have empathy or emotions - are not alive? Are they some kind of dead man walking? Not trying to be mean, I'm just curious about your view
@geeklore8528

@@andrewlance3898 no your right to address it and call me out xxx. In my view the ability to love and feel empathy, separates us from most species. We can debate if animals can feel empathy, but for simplicity let's say they can't. Empathy and compassion can bring us more oder our full potential. Where as a lack of empathy, means that a person only acts in their basic instincts. A. I can only act on their programming, or basic instincts to exsist. As for psychopaths, they can't acheive their full potential because there stuck and driven by their compulsive need. Hope this sorta makes sense, it's really late WHERE I am xxx

We are what we measure Are we dead? are we alive? Or are we both? Does we exists in all theoretically possible states simultaneously before being measured? Does we are in a quantum overlap? Like schrodinger's cat.

The question of when life starts is quite a great one, not only religiously but spiritually and biologically. I mean, bacteria is alive but is not really intelligent, the amazing and "brilliant" performance it has doesn't have anything to do with their own intelligence but the brilliance of nature and the code of their creation. If you say a heartbeat makes you alive then a fetus is not alive until its around 6 weeks. If you say its a soul then what comes of cloned creatures? they were indeed alive and survived quite a fair amount of days, the timelapse they're going to remain living is actually increasing. So, what exactly can you say defines life, how can you quantify life? Is better on the debate to narrow down the scope, let's talk only about the most alike creature to the AI, and that would be a human being, one of the most complex creatures thou, unfortunately. I like how in series like Ghost in the Shell or I Robot questions the "Ghost" created inside the machine, how certain words or key points can create something quite resembling a living being. What makes us human? Our capacity to decide on our own terms? we don't have own terms, while an AI system is based in a series of codes and regulations we are also commanded by codes of ethics, and cultural, religious, social regulations. Even if you say you go against those terms you are still following a social group that doesn't follow through those rules. I think there is no answer to the question of life, but there is a need, and there will always be one, to question it and debate it. In the end, maybe, questioning life and our own meaning are what makes us humans and what will determine if AI is alive or not as a higher creation, not just a mere creature that has a level of intelligence and capacities. Something more akin to us, if we are to believe ourselves greater, of course, than other creatures.

I think alive just means being made out of cells that reproduce and stuff( plants are also alive) but what we are talking about is sentience so can they feel. Of course a programm may seem sentient and they may tell you they are but we never really know if they actually feel because we cant go in the head. The same way we cant know if a chess playing programm is just doing what they are programmed to do or if they actually know how to play we will never know if programms actually are like humans or if they are just really good actors

Victoria Piva Well i do think we exist since we can think and for there to be thoughts there needs to be a thinker („I think therefore I am“) But everything else could technically just be a simulation or something and not be real

Sylvest_ art Do you know schrodinger’s cat? Imagine a box close-up with a cat, a radioactive e element ,poison, Geiger-Müller accountant and axe inside. If Geiger-Müller accountant measure radiation, poison will be liberated killing the cat. So we have 50% of chace of the cat being dead, and 50% of chance of the cat being alive. We can’t open the box to confirm. So theorically the cat is dead and alive at the same time
@sylvest_art7688
@sylvest_art7688 3 жыл бұрын
Victoria Piva I still think we can know we are alive because theoretically the cat might be dead and alive but practically this doesn’t make sense as far as i know. And I would say that knowing you can think is enough of a measurement to know you are here in some form or another But yeah this is really a topic you can bend your head around
