Hey I'm back! Yessir, I'm finally gettin' back to this KZfaq stuff. And boy do I have a doozy of a video for you. It's got adventure, it's got drama, it's got...some trees that look like they have 2 trunks.
Back in my day we'd call them Siamese trees. But that was way back in aught-two. It was a different time and we didn't know any better. We had no idea the emotional damage we were inflicting on trees like this. But progress is progress, and now they are rightfully called "conjoined trees." We also call the smaller ones "little trees" now.
When I saw these trees in the nearby town of Monrovia, I knew immediately I wanted to photograph them. What I didn't know is that I'd end up photographing them with both 4x5 large format and 6x17 panoramic on Kodak Portra 160 film. I also didn't think I'd be doing it on Easter Sunday. But hey, life is crazy like that. You just never know what kind of curveballs the great magnet in the sky is going to throw at you, amirite? One day you're sitting around thinking about what to do tomorrow for Easter and the next day you're taking pictures. Gosh. Really makes you think, huh? Haha boy we have a good time here don't we?
I always do this. The description for the video starts off somewhat on-subject and then it just deteriorates to the ramblings of a madman doing a bad impression of Morty.
Enjoy!

Thank You for taking all of us with! Finding subjects in a modern world, Herculean task! Driving by, one sees landscaping, parks and trees. This is Hollywood! The green, awful ground cover, trees as a backdrop and the park, non- existent. Real parks in LA, have rangers (enforcers) to collect exorbitant fees, for a shoot. No problem, if one part of large budget epic movie! Me doing family and few friends group, not possible! Bravo.Really detailed video.!

More often than not, photography is a game of problem solving. Thank you for taking us along on the journey to see that problem solving in action. It benefits us all to learn from episodes like this because we can recall how you handled some of the same issues we face ourselves in the field and apply them when needed.

What I love the most is just witnessing the process, because to me the most valuable time is before the shutterbutton is pressed. The process here only goes to show photography is challenging, and just the way I like it. There wouldn't be any highs without the lows.

Another great video Nick. There’s something about both yours and Jamie Windsor’s videos that just make me very happy whenever they arrive. I always think to myself ‘…great, I’m going to save that one till I’ve got time to sit down and savour it with a nice cup of coffee…” I hope both of you will just continue to produce adhoc videos on whatever keeps you interested. Thanks for the great work 👍

There's more to SoCal than cities and deserts. I loved finding places where there was lots of erosion that caused the sandstone to take on fantastic shapes (it's one of the reason I retired to the St. George, UT area) but taking the 241 Toll Road to the 91 you'll pass an area with interesting erosion and soil color changes. There are places along the coast with fantastic rock formations like Victoria Beach in Laguna. There are the tide pools in places like Dana Point. The area where El Toro Road ends as you head towards Laguna Beach and the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park is a nice hike and you can find caves where highwaymen used to hide waiting for stagecoaches to go by so they could rob them. There is an example of a native built hut. Beware of mountain lions. Beware of mountain lions (It's worth repeating twice since they've killed several people in wilderness areas around south County.) The Federal Building in the area is worth photographing too as are some of the buildings off the 5 freeway around Crown Valley Parkway and of course South Coast Plaza is a great place for architectural photography. Or get permission to photograph where I learned photography, Orange Coast College. They have a mixture of old and new buildings ranging from the '60s to current day.

One thing I noticed right away is the excellent composition of the video shot of you setting up the 4X5 with the diagonal line of trees leading to the 4-Runner in the background.
