I really dig Zack Arias approach. It's sort of melancholic humoristic and very enlightening at the same time. There are plenty of over confident photographers with bad taste that make "instructional" videos. Watching a very very skillful pro, like Zack, share his thoughts and advice while being a real human being, is such a relief. Thank you Zack :)

Thanks, Zack! I´m so happy you picked my question! I loved it when you took that ukulele out of the bag, wasn´t expecting that, hehe. Most of that setup seems plausible for me to bring, except for the PWs (a bit out of my budget), but I´ll just get a cable. Oh, and it is my real name, you pronounced quite right. Not birth name, though, I´m gathering the courage to transition to it (together with another transition, long story to be told at another time), which is why you couldn´t find any online presence under that name. I´ll be honored if you read my blog. I´ll definitely e-mail you a link to it once it´s running.

Great idea with the handy off-camera-flash. I love my X100s for travel! Just one little addition for people looking into compact, reliable Wireless flash: Get a Yongnuo YN560 III or YN560 IV. They have the radio built in. (the flash sells for 70$ max on ebay) You only need a tiny RF603 on top of the camera to fire the flash then. (they sell for about 15$) Or you use a YN560-TX trigger that can remotely control the flashes zoom and power at about the size of a pocketwizard trigger. (trigger goes for under 50 bucks)

Can anyone tell me if a nikon ttl cord will be safe to use on the x100/x20 for ocf? It looks like the nikon pins have a different layout than the fuji ones. I really don't want to daagse my camera or flash.

Hello Zack! Thanks so much for your precious advices. I want to experiment HSS and I have an X-t1. Now the technology has evolved and it seems that some options are possible for x-t1 and other fujis. Do you anything of the Cactus V6 II or Nissin Air? Thanks

Curious about your PocketWizards I have the TT1 and the Flex5s and I can sync up to 1/8000th of a second if the flash is capable of doing HSS are you saying that cable will sync any flash at higher speeds?

I am shooting a wedding in the woods at 2pm to 8pm the lighting is terrible at these times in this location and creates crazy shadows, I need to be a one man show on this one and have no way to set up light around the perimeter to fill the shadows. So depending on an camera or bracket set up, but don,t want to use a lot of direct flash. There is nothing in the decorations, as they are minimalistic the I can bounce from. Any suggestions? Lighting, lenses? I need 2 hands for the camera as the 70-200/17-50 on a crop sensor I am planing to shoot with do get heavy after a while. I have just recently found you on you and have been enjoying your instruction immensely, thank you.

At the time you made this video I do not believe you had yet reviewed the Magmod flash nodifiers. Would that now be a better choice as a portable set up unit.? Thanks.

As it was already asked... What is the speedlite in axis bracket you showed here please? Couldn't find something similar on the net. It seems pretty useful to center a flash in a modifiet instead of using 2 lightstands...

hey Zack! i am wondering if it is possible to use the x100s with my two canon flashes (430EX and 430EXII) from my DSLR via pocketwizards... do you know about that? thank you

Hi, Zack. I am wondering: What kind of flash bracket/umbrella holder you used in the above video?
@coolcat238 жыл бұрын
Why schlep around these big pocket wizard triggers? Just get a Cactus V6 trigger and a Cactus RF60 flash. The latter has the radio trigger built-in. No need for extra batteries or a sync-cable. The RF60 also has a tripod thread on the side, so you can mount it in the same way.

I dig this. I had preordered a Nikon Z7, so it would fit my myriad of F lenses, but I'm reconsidering selling everything I own, buying an XT-3 a 16-55mm f/2.8 and a 56mm f/1.2 and traveling the world! What good is all this gear, when I sit in the same place day in and day out and can't get out to use it all? Hmm.

If you use Canon and have Magic Lantern installed, you can set your oncamera flash to -10EV, which lets it trigger external flashes without putting out significant light - good if your remotes die and you don't have a sync cord handy.

What adapter is that holding the flash? looks perfect shooting straight into the center of the umbrella unlike other adapters.

Same question here!
@The_Distance_1118 жыл бұрын
I believe it is a Manfrotto 026 Swivel Umbrella Adapter. Zack has mentioned the Manfrotto piece in other videos and I've owned one for years. The Lumapro flash has a threaded socket on the side of the head to mount the flash as shown in the video rather than needing to mount it via the shoe as normally done.

How do you get the flash to lay horizontally like that?
@Garacha2227 жыл бұрын
Marco, your question was a year ago, but the answer is that Lumopro LP180 flash has that ability because there is a threaded hole in the side for that very reason. A nice added feature to that flash. This flash also has a great reputation for solid build, consistent lighting power and also color temperature consistency. A great bargain.

Zack Arias great video. I just got 1 question - is there a way to have a TTL with x100?
@matthewallenblack9 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm not Zack, nor am I in any way a proficient photographer (yet), but I'm saving up for a Fuji EF-42 flash to use for off-camera flash with my recently acquired X100. The top three results here (EF-42, EF-X20, and EF-20) all do TTL with an X100: www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=fuji+flash

sasatrif Hey, I just found out about this today, too: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1079740-REG/nissin_nd40_f_i40_compact_flash_for.html To me, it seems like the best of the bunch. But for now, I'll just keep saving my pennies and enjoying available light photography. I feel like I should master the X100's fill flash before I get fancier. If you're wanting to get fancy, though, the i40 seems like a kickass little flash. I haven't read a ton about it yet, but it sounds like it works as an off-camera TTL slave.

You could also use one of David Hobby's techniques and use a small lumiquest softbox. Much easier to use than a big umbrella, but not quite as big. Also looks less ridiculous.
@promethea.echenique10 жыл бұрын
Thank you, David, I´ll look into it. Being able to use it with the monopod I´ll already be carrying is a plus, but at the same time it looks like it´s still quite a small light source.

Promethea Manos you can even go smaller; do you know these herbal life plastic containers, for their protein powders? www.amazon.com/Herbalife-Formula-Nutritional-Shake-Cookies/dp/B004J2MBSO these make for great difusers, all you need is to cut the shape of the head of your speedlight off of the top, and off you go. off course you better don't buy the powder yourself, coz then the budget problem will appear again, better try to find a friend or relative who's into Herbal Life products, and ask for an empty container. I use this myself, you remove the paper cover, and it's dense white plastic, comparable to some of the sphere diffusers by Fong. best is you can fit your speedlight into the container. light is spread very nicely, and over a bigger area of your frame. I you think this is interesting & you will give it a go, PM me, I have made picture of how to build these, & sample pictures too. have a good trip
