Here's a video of a recent shoot I did as part of a collaborative art project here in Atlanta. I was assigned to photograph a resident of one neighborhood and my subject is this fantastic gentleman by the name of Rabbit.
Follow along as I talk through the gear I take, how I set it up, the camera settings used, and the post production I do to finish the images.
You can read more about this shoot on the DEDPXL blog as well as see the final images.

Cheers,
Zack

Zach, it was amazing that you slabbed Sony masking tape to a Fuji camera ;) Very cool and useful video, I use Einstein heads too. Anyway, I do believe headshots need more DOF, for example, I want to see details of his ears, chin, both eyes (one eye was slightly out), a little bit deeper DOF that can keep his shirt out of focus but still shows most details of the face. At least for my taste. So no need to use medium format if I was shooting headshot.

@1:15.....Ah, brings back sweet memories as a young photographer, tasked with the mundane PA stuff....and to the delight of many, the head photographer would have an asst. ATTEMPT to fold or collapse a reflector disc. Operative word....ATTEMPT. Thinking "Figure 8" and doing a Figure 8....are world's apart. Or about three hours.

What tremendous gentleman Rabbit is. Great choice of subject, and your portraits really spoke to his character and a certain 'genteel' mischief. I'm curious as to the Gentleman's reaction to seeing the printed shots. Did he give you any feedback? Great work as always Zack and thanks for sharing. After learning and enjoying so much from OneLight 2.0 - I'll be one of the first in line for your workflow series. Respect.

Hey Zack I have a question, I noticed that the portrait you edited was shot at f4, but it's depth of field was quite shallow, only the eyes and mustache were tack sharp. I can't get that shallow dof unless I shoot at like f1.8 is that because of the camera you used, lens, or something else?. thanks!!
@g0at3
@g0at3 9 жыл бұрын
Yup. It's a medium format Phase one. Even more DOF than a full frame 35MM sensor.
@g0at3
@g0at3 9 жыл бұрын
Hund Redfire it's the focal length, but it's really the combination of the distance from the sensor to the subject. You can create the same framing closer to the sunbject with a longer lens= shallow DOF. A long lens, large sensor and close to the subject creates the narrow DOF. All things being the same, framing with a larger sensor will create a more shallow DOF.

But why ? I just do not get it Zack . Leaf and Einstien for good quality passport pic . For people it is about soul soul soul all the way and that needs shadow and for that you do not need a ton of dynamic range , I could harp on about slide film , but wot is wrong with window light and a reflector ? . I love the contextual shot with your sony , but you are a top Pro and could have done better than this .. Those old eyes have seen so much , he should have been shot looking out a window side on looking solem but with a knowing smile with plenty depth of field n no bokeh to show enough of his home , the things that meant something to him and said something about him , after all he made those clear to you . OMG the play of light and shadow BUT IN COLOUR , could have been awsome , and I said "in colour" because I meant black and white thinking applied to colour ..
@AllanSutherland
@AllanSutherland 10 жыл бұрын
Hello Donald . Thank you for making you point so politely and respectfully . I still stand by what I have said , it is not difficult to make precise focus on the eyes and use an appropriate dof , even snapseed can bring out the life in a persons face and so can a used old nikon d3000 , as for light , well soft n natural is nothing less than wonderful and it can be had at a window and bounced back in with a soft reflector , we do not need equipment like that to make just as good a picture , at the end of the day it was nothing special compared to what I see from many people let alone a pro .
@AllanSutherland
@AllanSutherland 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Don for coming back to me over my amateur and simple comments and for doing so with so much respect and explanation . I only have simple equipment , far from imac and further from print so I see your point of view . I guess I am just looking at things from the perspective of the man with very little who has to make do , it can be a valid perspective though but in this instance perhaps my critique has been to harsh , and for your kind explanation I kindly offer my sincere thanks . Please keep in touch and share both our work and opinion's , for that I would be grateful . Allan .

Allan Sutherland As Donald stated, you're seeing an image in a very compressed 1080 video on KZfaq. The beauty of photography is there are SO many ways to approach a photograph. Dark and moody. Bright and light. Tons of shadows. None at all. I started this faces and spaces project and decided on this beauty dish + white background for every portrait I shot. I wanted the final project to be very consistent with the headshot and then vary from space to space but I shot the spaces with the same focal length and available light only so there is still some consistency. You can't say though "he should have been shot this way or that way." You can say "He could have been shot this way or that way." And you'd be right. And it may have been a better photo than the on white headshot. Lastly... I shot the Phase not for dynamic range but for sharpness, shallow DoF, and the AMAZING print quality these files give me. The Phase shines in print. Heads and shoulders above any DSLR offering. Large prints sing with this camera. I want that quality when I go to print with this. It's a good discussion to have. The last rebuttal I have to your comment is thinking of me as a "top pro". Dan Winters is a top pro. Gregory Heisler is a top pro. Platon is a top pro. Mary Ellen Mark is a top pro. I'm a professional photographer.. yes. Top? No. Highly followed on social media? Yes. Top pro? No. Not yet. Maybe in another 15 or so years. Maybe. Cheers, Zack

Thank you for your kind , polite and enlightening reply Zack Arias . I do appreciate it that you have taken the time to reply , I would say humbled . It is a fascinating subject as I view it as an art form and for my part and pleasure the most interesting studys come from history to a far greater extent than technology and modern styles , I also find it interesting to learn from the history of painting too and wondered if Steve Mccurry was a big fan of Rembrant or if the light /shadow and colour in some of his work is a combination of the characteristics of kodachrome and his chosen expoure . Anyway for all this searching through history and in view of the limitations of a camera/optics or perhaps I should say the physics of optics have and how our brains "look" at a 2d image I have decided on black and white minimalism as my chosen path , easy for the mind to "get" , less easy to do . Thank you once again Zack and if you can spare a mo , please keep in touch . Kind Regards . Allan Sutherland .
