If you've already seen pop up flash diffuser part 1 you'll know how they work and how important the environment you're using on in is. Here in DPUFD part 2 we're going to take them outside and see what happens.
When we used the flash diffusers indoors there was somewhere for the light to rattle around in. It bounced off the walls and ceilings creating some really cool lighting from such a tiny flash head. But outside in the wide open world it's not quite the same story.
Our best DIY flash diffuser (the white card) has nothing to bounce light off and- well just watch the video and you'll see what I mean.
We have plenty more categorised photography videos for free at www.photography...

There are many experts in every single field. Very few have the knack of teaching their subject in a truly "simplified" fashion, making complex material appear easy by both explaining it well and demonstrating it and ....... keeping the lesson interesting and entertaining. You're a naturally gifted (and outstanding) teacher, many congratulations. Have watched quite a few of your videos, learnt a lot, still take crap photographs (but better than before!) but hey - who said the learning curve wasn't steep. I'll be ordering your DVD for my son to watch.

Thank you staj. You can use any of them if you're using flash. If you're in low light without flash then the 1.8 would be best. But with flash I'd use the zoom because you have more focal lengths available to be creative with.

Yes you're pretty much spot on. The light reflected around inside the canister will disappear, but the frontal light will be a tiny bit softer because it'll have to pass through the plastic before it hits James. Check out DIY Pop Up Flash Diffuser Part 1 where we go into that in more detail.

It can Biplav Shrestha but I keep mine switched off because when photographing people in low light (such as at a wedding) I don't want the camera to let them know and ruin a magic candid moment. So in this case it was quicker to shine video light onto subject than fish about in the menus...

Rice paper also works well outdoors. Has similar effects with the plain papper, maybe better... (my oppinion). I also used some plastic cups... not very good indoors, better outdoors... Also used the inner carton of the toilet paper indoors. It stops the direct light and reflects it upwards, bouncing on the ceiling (

I see what you mean, but light from a little on camera flash is not very powerful and by the time it has bounced off the card then the paper and traveled forward to James there won't be much of it left. You could possibly try it with a high ISO then it might work.

thank you +MrAmchuk that's a brilliant tip! that mostly work when you shoot on the same position and the subject is on the same position too, but Mike always wobble and move ever so slightly -so he make sure that the subject is in focus.( yes he don't trust his eyes much when focusing) ha ha dontt tell him that - Melissa ( for Mike )

Thanks Mike, you've got the Best Photography Tutorial Videos Online - Simple, Concise and Practical. Hope you can help with a tip, what lens would you recommend to shoot an Indoor Birthday Party, I know there are many factors that influence the "right" choice of lens but can my pop up flash + 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 lens + 50mm 1.8 work? Light or lack of it, is what i'm really concerned about and i'm so close to breaking the bank to get a the Canon 430ex II Flash with my "rubbish" lenses. thanks Mike

GREAT Videos Mike! Thanks. I just made a form diffuser for my off camera flash and was wondering what I was going to do for the pop-up flash. BTW, do you have any advice on taking pictures in a concert? My kids are performing in a couple of weeks. THANKS!!
@MikeBrowne
@MikeBrowne 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks dbcgolf1 it depends on what environment they're performing in and how much light you have to play with there. I'm guessing school hall at night and flash won't reach far enough so try switching it right off, push up your ISO nice and high (you'll have to experiment as to how high) and keep your aperture wide open in Aperture priority (AV) mode. Oh and get as close to the stage as you can to avoid camera shake through a long lens. Camera Shake - and how to avoid it!

Thanks Mike. Is it possible to make it with downgrading flash compensation setting in camera(-2,-1 etc) ?
@MikeBrowne
@MikeBrowne 6 жыл бұрын
Not really loverboykimi. flash compensation setting would reduce output - making difusers etc changes the QUALITIES of the light, not the quantity. I watched this video because I wanted to get a mini diffuser or a soft box for my pop up flash, but I'm still not sure. There's the mini version of a typical soft box that goes over the flash and there's also something similar to the 'paper and blue-tack' method you showed. I'm not sure what the difference would be. Any suggestions?

What can u use in forest when there's low light ? for shooting flowers?
@MikeBrowne
@MikeBrowne 9 жыл бұрын
Best way is to use a slow exposure and a tripod to keep camera steady +Pedemonte Mario. But make sure there's no breeze or the flower will move. Or if you want to use flash use a speedlight off camera and bounce the light off a white card to soften it - MIKE
@Sssmoothy
@Sssmoothy 12 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but i don't understand how "shattering" the light, with the film canister, would do anything when you're shooting outside. The shattered rays that do not fall on the subject directly, aren't they just lost since there's nothing there to bounce them back onto the subject? So he is still only lit by the direct rays, and the flash has to use more power to compensate for the lost light. Right?
