Explore the dynamics of street photography and capturing the play of human activity on the glittering sidewalks of the city with photographers and friends, Joel Meyerowitz and Melissa O’Shaughnessy.
A pioneer of street photography and color, Joel’s extensive career spans decades from the bustling streets of New York City to the quiet corners of Italy. And as one of a growing number of women street photographers contributing to this dynamic genre, Melissa O’Shaughnessy offers a refreshing addition to the tradition of street photography through her curious and quirky vision. Together they will discuss seeing quickly, being open to chance, the joy of wandering, and the magic of photographing in the street, where placing a frame around a fleeting moment creates new and unexpected relationships that reveal lasting impressions of our time. Get inspired as we dive into a conversation around the art of street photography moderated by Denise Wolff.
About Joel Meyerowitz
The acclaimed photographer Joel Meyerowitz was born in 1938 in the Bronx, New York, where he also grew up. Starting on the streets of New York in the early 60’s with friends like Tony-Ray Jones and Garry Winogrand, he studied painting and initially worked as an Art Director in advertising. Meyerowitz began shooting on 35mm color film in 1962. In the following year, he alternated this with black and white before returning to the richness of storytelling in color. New York always remained the dominant focus of his life as a photographer - from his early works in the sixties to his evocative images taken at Ground Zero in the aftermath of 9/11.
In 2017, Joel Meyerowitz was honored for his lifework with the Leica Hall of Fame Award. Meyerowitz lives and works in New York and Tuscany. Joel is recognized around the world as one of the most important street photographers of his generation, a pioneering artist in the use of color, and a highly influential teacher.
Joel’s current preoccupation is sharing a life’s worth of learning through his Masters of Photography Class.
About Melissa O’Shaughnessy
Melissa O’Shaughnessy (born in Minneapolis, 1960) is a New York-based photographer. Her monograph, Perfect Strangers, was published by Aperture in 2020, and her work is included in Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz’s Bystander: A History of Street Photography (2017 edition) as well as featured in numerous exhibitions around the world. She is a member of UP Photographers.

I have to pause the video, and go shoot. Because listening to these two wonderful photographers makes me excited to go capture moments on the streets.

What I love about Joel is that he will have told many of these stories and given those same tips hundreds of times in interviews and workshops but he never sounds jaded. That’s the sign of a great teacher who loves their subject and wants to share that passion and enthusiasm to those seeking to follow in his footsteps. I’m sure with his infectious and curious nature he will be around for many years to come and will continue to a wonderful sage for us photographers.

I like the last part Joel said "" I never go out of my house without a camera , never ever. It sits on my bedside table when I go to sleep at night because when I wake up in the morning, the nice , lights and bed and my wife looks beautiful sleeping , and what I making the morning of the light....I make photography ....If you're sitting at home, and you are feeling flat and bored or you know you have anything to say anymore. You can keep going down that spiral and feel shitty about yourself... But if you, say well, the world is going on outside, something will happen to you. During the course of that day, you will see things, you will forget about being bored and drained and gray and neurotic and everything else that your are. You will change and you will become your best yourself because camera is your key to the world's possibilities " Thank you Joel and Melissa for your inspiring talks !

Everything spoken here by Joel and Melissa is true of the street shooter's inner experience while working. Hands down the best discussion of street photography on KZfaq. I could listen to them for hours...

Thank you so much, the last question was a very powerfull one. I am a leg amputhee photographer (with a prosthetic leg, and sometimes dont have the will or the inspiration to go out, get tired, sweat, or walk too much, but when i put on my camera on the wrist, and step outside to witness all thats happening, every pain, suffer, depression go away step by step, i go back to home physically exhausted, with my knee tired, but very very happy because i did it. No matter what, i just keep shooting my world.

Thank you so much! Worked today and had pretty bad day shooting street. But I love hearing Joel Meyerowitz talk. Makes me inspired to get out tomorrow again! I never look at images, pretty much, when out in the streets. What good does that?! You will just miss shots or get angry because you didn't get whatever you wanted etc. Or even happy with your image isn't good because that is not the time to be that. Keep scouting the world around you.

Thank you for the inspiration Joel and Melissa. Thank you Leica for bringing such wonderful content. Could not agree more that if you are feeling bored, down or whatever then go out with a camera. Within a short amount of time all of those feelings are forgotten. At least for me it works that way. The experience shooting with the M cameras is so awesome.

This is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, feelings, and pure joy. Talented photographers are important and interesting, but generous human beings help us dip our own brushes into the wellspring of the human experience, and Joel and Missy are both of those things at once!

I don’t think it’s more miserable in difficult countries. If anything, it brings a warmth that you can’t imagine on a self centred busy NY street. That was the only slight in what was a lovely interview.

Preparation, time on the street, brings luck and in the end luck is subsumed by unconscious perception. You capture more than your conscious mind saw.

Hilariously I have a Leica M4 with a 35 Summicron and Lomo LC-A (it has a 32mm lens) and on my Nikon D850 I normally shoot with a 35 f1.4, Nikon n90s has a 35mm f2. I seem to have a theme.

Very interesting. Just a shame you just show the same pictures over and over again during the talk. Personally, I watched to learn but also to see their work. Showing the same over and over again doesn’t help to learn.
