Gout runs in my family, it is a particularly painful form of arthritis. My grandmother suffered for 20 years with it and wished she could die, but her fate was to live to 87 even with bad health habits. Her daughter, my aunt, suffered from the arthritis pain so horribly that she was willing to risk an experimental drug with a 10% risk of brain hemorrhage. She died of a sudden massive brain hemorrhage. My sister suffers terribly and has had two knee replacements. At no time were my family members told about diet and lifestyle changes to prevent the painful joint attacks. 23andMe DNA health reports informed me that my genetics predispose me to gout. Indeed, I reversed terrible arthritis pain when I became a whole food vegan.

Me too, I'm predisposed to it. It went away and I slipped up and was eating animal foods again and it came back. This time I'm not having anymore animal foods again. It seems to affect my fingers, wrists and hands at night. Tingly, numb and painful like glass in my veins. Overall plant based diet is best for most health conditions it seems. Like your aunt there are so many who never figure this out & that diet is the answer...I'm convinced that my body can't handle animal foods. It's too rich for me to process it. We are blessed to have discovered this & to have plant based doctors on KZfaq. Dr. Bernard is one of my very favorites.

Question for Neal Barnard: I realized that I can eat saturated fats, sugar, and gluten and feel awful but can reset my body by doing 48 hours fast. Would it be safe for me to do this every weekend or maybe once per month that I eat most unhealthy foods on Friday night, fast over the weekend, and eat healthy Monday to Friday? I am thinking that I will just burn off all the calories of the unhealthy foods by doing 48 hours fast and running 3 miles everyday.

Question for Neal Barnard: Strawberries and Blueberries are the fruits that love me back. Banana (has saturated fat too), Kiwi (also hurts my corner of my lips), mango, papaya, melon are like laxatives (typically tropical fruits have bad effects on me like pineapple has bromelain which cause indigestion). Watermelon relaxes you (sorbitol, lycopene both bad) and has high glycemic index. Oranges has Synephrine which can drug your brain. Apples is high in FODMAP, and my body doesn't like it. Grapes & dates increases blood sugar a lot. There is always fresh organic blueberries at Whole Foods. Blueberries contain a lot of Salicylates and I am wondering if I could eat too much of it. I eat two pint of blueberries everyday along with up to 3 pints of strawberries I can find, and I believe these two are the only two good fruits out there. Basically I eat blueberries (a lot of Salicylates) and strawberries EVERYDAY, and a lot of them because there are no other safe fruits, and am wondering if this is okay.

I know this is anadotal, but my Nextdoor neighbour( a big time animal eater)had serious Gout where he struggled to walk even a few steps. I persuaded him that I could reverse his Gout if he allowed me to put him on a Wholefood Plant Based/Vegan suitable diet. For the following 3 days I made him 3 meals a day + snacks( Dried Dates etc), by the third day he was up and going out to the next town to see friends, his condition got that much better in just those 3 days!. Unfortunately on the fourth day I went to drop off his midday meal, and found he had factory made ‘meat’ mince shepherds pie and Dairy Milk in his fridge. I was so dejected and frankly pissed of with him, that I ended my help, since that day I have only seen him out of his flat once and that was to see his GP who told him he had Heart Disease. Some people just can’t be saved it seems!.

But cos of my PTSD I could only help him if he was willing to allow me to, when he agreed I could just about manage it, but when I discovered he had bought the stuff that’s killing him, I had to back out, there is only so much a person can do for someone, the rest is up to them, unfortunately he wasn’t prepared to do his bit!.

@@marley7659 when I said I was pissed off with him buying ‘meat’ and dairy on the fourth day, I meant that’s how I felt out of frustration, I didn’t show anything like that towards him. I simply told him if he was willing to give it another go I would start again tomorrow, but he just looked at me blankly not even trying to connect with what I was saying. Which included me telling him he would undo the great benefits he gained in just 3 days (of a plant based/Vegan suitable diet). But nothing I said seemed to make any difference, once in the passed he looked at me like I was an alien when I asked if I could use his oven, to cook a Vegan Pizza, so he has an ingrained Carnivore( like wtf we are Predators) mindset!

"Still thinks"? What? More and more EVIDENCE-BASED studies come out continuously proving that meat and other animal parts/excretions are causing a range of diseases in humans, while a whole foods plant based diet is the optimum human diet (and is still the only diet that is proved to reverse some conditions such as heat disease). The only "still thinks" element here is that you still think eating the body parts and excretions of animals is healthy. Regarding high cholesterol - seriously? All you need to do is spend a brief bit of time to learn how heart disease occurs to clearly see why high cholesterol can cause it. Whole food plant based diet on the other hand contains no cholesterol.
