Its cool to me how they are so similar to vigv or variable stators inside of turbine engines, and how they serve the same purposes.

Awesome videos Chris! Thanks for letting us see what most cannot! What is the spec on the main bearings for this turbines? Just curious as they have a hard life.

It is a curiosity because one of the failure points of the turbine in a hydroelectric plant that caused loss of life in Siberia a few years ago, was improper maintenance to the lower turbine bearings. The main reason for that was because the only way to change the oil was to totally shut it down and get inside to do it. Was curious what is normal and how many revolutions you can actually get before it is time to change bearings and seals. Love the channel! Thanks a lot!

The century old bearings are, well, a century old. (some say they do that on purpose to keep the brushes moving so they never freeze in place. if they wear slowly, the springs may not keep full pressure on them.)

The impeller shaft appears to be slightly off center as it turns. Is that normal?

Yeah really, it may need a half-turn of tightening on the bearing blocks but when you get that old, you'll wobble a bit too.

Looks like that shaft isn't running true. That can't be good for the bearings and seals.

While the engineer in me wants to see it within tens of thousands, I understand why it isn't. (it's very old, and uses brushed contacts.)

they open and close the gates that allow more or less water to go through the turbine, thus making more or less power.
