Many people got the correct answer (because you guys are smarties): Oxygen delivery drops, our heart compensates to increase delivery speed of what oxygen is available (and pick up new oxygen at the lungs). Additionally, some extra smarties mentioned expelling CO2 - that's another mechanism that influences breathing. Well done! (and for those few that mentioned these people were simply panicking - as much as you guys were joking, it's actually a viable explanation as well. 😝)

Or could it be: chemo-receptors in the pons, sense the change in blood pH (mainly due to higher CO2 concentration compared with Oxygen) lower pH, innervating the adjacent medulla (respiratory centre in the brain srem), to suppress the medulla oblongata's vagus stimulation. The vagus nerve at normal activation, slows the heart rate. Reduced vagus stimulation would increase heart rate.

Basically: 1. Hypoxia = low production of ATP by mitochondria 2. Creatine --> regenerates ADP-->ATP 3. Na/K ATPase work is maintained (by creatine regenerated ATP) to restore ion balance on both sides of axonal membrane (repolarize towards the resting potential), despite O2 deficit affecting natual ATP synthesis in mitochondria 4. More/better excitation despite hypoxia Great vid. Many thanks (as always)!

As a pilot who flys a light, unpressurized aircraft, I monitor my SpO2 and heart rate to know when I need to be on supplemental O2. The heart rate increases to get more blood (oxygen) to my head. I’ve seen this relationship many times. As an aside, flying at altitude without supplemental O2 leads to a lot more fatigue.

@marcusmoonstein242

The heart rate increase is an automatic reflex caused by the drop in blood oxygen. The reason is that the most common cause of reduced blood oxygen is physical exertion which causes oxygen to be consumed by the muscles (aerobic system). The heart rate then needs to increase in order to get more oxygen back into the blood and on to the muscles.

In my experience, creatine levels are possibly low in many cases with runners, especially those who train in hot and humid conditions. If you search on "creatine muscle relaxation time" that should point to some studies on this. I was constantly getting what felt like a "cramp, then strain" reaction in my muscles after less than 2 miles on almost every run, but without the cramp. After taking 5g of creatine per day, I stopped hurting myself within 48 hours. I was probably straining muscles due to poor muscle relaxation during the eccentric phases, and training induced dehydration was frequently degrading the creatine synthesis in my kidneys and liver for hours per day, resulting in very high creatine depletion.

To answer your question: sinus node and sympathetic nervous system are stimulated by hypoxemia and then increase heart rate and cardiac output. This is to compensate for the lack of oxygen. There are a number of diseases whose symptoms could perhaps be improved by an increased ATP reserve in the nervous system, for example chronic vascular encephalopathy.

One thing I noticed is that I can (surprisingly) run and bike at fairly high altitudes, up to about 12,000 ft and still be able to do it, and feel normal. I am breathing hard, but I would be anyway. But if I just walk around, I can get an altitude headache. I think that when you are running, your heartrate and breathing rate automatically adjust to get enough oxygen. Not so if you are just sitting in a chair.

I suggest it has to do with blood pressure - artieries widen in the oxygen deprived state to allow more O2 to reach organs - this in turn though reduces blood pressure (as can be seen in the chart) because the arteries aren't as narrow which is then countered through increased heart rate: more "heart pumps" are needed to maintain the blood pressure in dilated arteries, than narrow ones.

Great info. I have an anecdote regarding creatine that might be interesting for some. I've been struggling with insomnia for years, and it's getting worse every month (I'll start treatment soon, don't worry). I been trying different changes in my nutrition to help me out and I realised that I had been supplementing with creatine for pretty much as long as I have insomnia, so even though nothing should relate the two things I stopped taking creatine a while ago and just for the sake of experimentation I've been cycling in and out of it. My results: creatine is of course not the cause or the trigger of my insomnia, but it does make it worse. My hypothesis, creatine helps you function better with less sleep, which when you are actually trying to accumulate sleep drive it can be a bad thing. It's like caffeine in a sense, although non stimulant, it helps you cope with sleep depravation so you can function, but it can make the problem worse by messing with your sleep drive and cycle. Well, that's my take on it anyways. I would like to see more content about sleep in the channel as well :)

@@cristianrosescu2914 Every body is different, and I don't think these are 'miracle cures', but I use some specific essential oils to help in sleeping myself. There are studies on lavender (compare with lavandin) and ylang-ylang oils showing effects on heart rate and hypertension, and I have also found clary sage oil to be quite powerful (not sure if this has studies to support it yet). A couple of drops of pure essential oil in water, using one of those cheap sonic vapourisers really helps. Also, try not to try to go to sleep, if that makes any sense. We say all the time 'try to relax', but if you think about it it's absurd. If you're trying, you're not relaxing. Relaxing, like sleeping, does not only *not* require effort, but putting effort into it actually works against your goal. I know it sounds obvious, but once I corrected this attitude, and in doing so the anxiety that comes with the issue, I remembered how to sleep again, and you can too.

O2+ATP->AMP+C3H6O3+Energy. (If a persone is well fed, O2 is the shortage compound in the chemical reaction). Creatine provides additional Phosphate therefore “Energy” for longer exercise. As an adaptation mechanism to the prolonged stress there’s an increase in metocodrial number therefore more O2 available in the above reaction. As simple as that.

Fick equation: Cardiac Output= total O2 consumed[VO2]/the difference in arterial venous O2 content [Ca-Cv]. Cardiac Output is also equal to the stoke volume * HR. In the context of experiment, Stroke Volume and VO2 are constant. So we can now have the formula: SV*HR= VO2/(Ca-Cv) Once again SV and VO2 are constants so as the Ca-Cv gets smaller, HR has to increase.

Very interesting stuff. The other thing to remember is that creatine is only good for short term neuro stimulation but not long term memory. It is primarily due to increased ATP. Note that it also decreases NREM deep sleep (which is an important time for when your brain cleans out your toxins). The other issue is that it can in some folks cause greater water retention in muscles causing weight gain and a puffy squishier look (rather than sinewy) depending on dosing. There are other side effects as well on GI, liver and sometimes kidney in older patients. In younger folks it is perfectly fine (and most people take it for the extra energy it provides for working out and faster short-term brain activity) but in others it has some larger side effects including hair loss (which stops as soon as they stop taking it). I know people who love it, and others who do not. It really depends on the individual.

Each individual body has its own O2 volume requirement. Volume is dependent upon O2 saturation and rate of flow. If saturation drops, then rate of flow must increase.

When strangled, the heart rate increases to support glycolysis, which produces lactate. This lactate needs to be transported by blood to the liver, where gluconeogenesis converts it back into glucose. The glucose is then transported back to the cells, and the entire cycle starts all over again. On the other hand, I assume a higher heart rate also facilitates faster transportation of glucose produced by the liver during the breakdown of glycogen in the process of glycolysis.

You mentioned that creatine helps mitochondria with creating more energy via "phosphorylation". I take that to mean, in the most simplistic terms, that creatine donates something to the mitochondria to help it along. Doesn't methylene blue do something similar by donating an electron, to help the mitochondria produce more energy?

Hi Nick, i have a fantastic question. Is there maybe a link between Creatin and Parkinson Disease ?
@Holy.HannaH
@Holy.HannaH 6 ай бұрын
Current research, unless I've missed something along the way, suggests the answer to that question is no. Some patients have a slight drop in the year prior to diagnosis whereas some have a slight raise after several years. A 5yr study of creatine monohydrate proved to be an ineffective treatment. Edit to add: I'm clearly not Nic, just sharing what I've learned in my own research.

Probably not, because Parkinsons comes from the destruction of grey matter areas that produce dopamine. Its not that the cells have a hard time signaling, it's that they don't have the signaling substance. But I could be wrong

I've been learningbice skating spins and have been taking creatine for about a month without loading and have noticed reaction and balance adjustments. It's a small differnce but I have un medicated asthma, under control & a high hemogloben level (within normal) but I have for the past month experienced less fatigue and a greater sense of ability to learn. Sadly I have has a psorisis flare up.. I know my heart rate is usually slow intil I am doing some physical activity, so the need for the body to increase blood flow to supply oxygen (& breathing more) seems to ho hand in hand but I might assume too much.😮

Thia could be applicable for the patients with ME/CFS. One of the discussed underlying mechanism is restricted blood flow especially in the brain and therefore hypoxia! They also suffer from brainfog so this could be potentially a real help!

Compensatory response of the sympathetic nervous system. The brain detected drop in 02 and started hyperventilating. The hyperventilation caused the heart rated to also go up. Yes, in part that helps to increase 02, but the 02 wasn't there! All this is a fancy way of saying: panic. Interestingly, while the average heart rate went up there were some extreme data points where the rate eventually went below.

Oxygen deprivation is more prevalent than people think..many people who suffer TMS and anxiety related physiological symptoms actually experience oxygen deprivation hence the manifestation of symptoms. It will be nice to know that perhaps supplementing with creatine can alleviate these episodes by allowing the body to have a more consistent O2 saturation in the blood.

Is it true that creatine doesn't readily cross the blood brain barrier and guidionic acid is a far better way to boost neuronal creatine levels? I have Hyperhomocysteinemia Accelerated Atherosclerosis and began getting dementia symptoms which improved greatly with 2g of guidionic acid and 2g of creatine. Hypomethylation due to the Hyperhomocysteinemia likely depleted my neuronal creatine as nearly half your available SAMe methyl donors are used to make creatine from guidionic acid. It's important to boost methylation with B vitamins (esp. B12, B9, B6 and B2) and trimethylglycine if taking guidionic acid as it can be a big draw on available methyl donors. When I have a coronary artery blockage (currently on my 7th since 2017) my main symptoms are breathlessness/ nocturnal dyspnoea and tachycardia. I've noticed at night when my blood oxygenation drops to around 80% my pulse rate can rise from around 50 bpm to 80 bpm, sometimes waking me up. I assume it's my heart trying to maintain oxygenation by speeding up a bit. Or else it's just stressed from forcing blood through a small arterial opening, or stressed from lack of oxygen to the heart muscle itself. It's the latter I feel is the case as my cardio-surgeon said the feeling of breathlessness is likely due to the heart muscle suffering hypoxia, as my blood oxygenation can be at 98% and I still feel breathlessness when I have a coronary artery blockage. It's good to know creatine could help in my situation. I will get back into taking 5g daily as it could help protect my brain a bit from my current hypoxic state.

I assume their heart rate increased due to the additional stress on their organs getting a lack of oxygen. They begin to breathe heavier and that gets their autonomic nervous system to ramp up production of circulating O2 hoping it gets to the surrounding tissues to preserve them as fast as possible

@m.b.593 if you only take 5grams a day it will take a month or more to fully saturate your muscles. That's why a lot of people do a load phase to reach maximum saturation quicker. Example taking up to 20 grams a day for a week or two

Halfway through I began wondering if creatine can help sleep apnea. I asked Perplexity, and was told " A study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that creatine supplementation led to a significant reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index (a measure of sleep apnea severity) in a group of overweight and obese adults with sleep apnea. The proposed mechanism is that creatine may help improve muscle function and reduce upper airway collapsibility, which is a key factor in sleep apnea. However, more research is still needed to fully understand the relationship between creatine and sleep apnea." Then again, I could be comparing apples to oranges.

The Heart Rate increases when there is less oxygen available through the lung Alveoli to increase the blood flow hence increasing the O2 transfer to the cells to as near normal a level as is possible - the less O2 transferring through the lung Alveoli to the blood the faster the heart will pump the blood around the body servicing the cells. The lack of O2 stimulates the production of Adrenalin which increases heart rate.

Serious question from a dad whose son takes Creatine and has a severe heart condition palliated by a TCPC (a Fontan circulation) whereby his univentricular heart already beats considerably faster than other hearts and his oxygen sats normally sit at 95%. Should he be taking Creatine? At 18, he's obsessed with weight training at the moment. He seems really happy because he's doing what he loves, which is great, but he needs advise on taking the Creatine and no one (least of all NHS cardiologists) seem willing or able to give it. Hope someone can help. Thanks
