The physics department at USF had an intramural soft ball team. When it came time to submit our jersey numbers, we chose PI, Euler's constant, PHI, root -1, root 2, etc. They told us we couldn't do that, that they had to be "numbers". Unless they're bidding on a custom software job. Since the software isn't written yet, no one really knows how long it will take (and therefore how much the work will cost). The salespeople ask the engineers how long it will take. The engineers reply with a pretty decent estimate of the amount of time it takes to write the code, but they don't factor in debugging and paperwork. Sales then reduces engineering's already low estimate to underbid the competition.

@@glennbaer1453That's why I always multiplied my estimate by 3. We do tend to think about how long it will take to write, but then you have to test it and fix any mistakes. My father was a quality assurance specialist for Redstone Arsenol in Huntsville, AL (where the Saturn V rockets were made). He once told me that he met an engineer there who swore that Pi was equal to 22/7. Not close to, equal to. Part of the definition of an irrational number is that it can't be expressed as a fraction of two integers. These are the same people who are designing multi million dollar military hardware. My Dad would have loved this guy.

LOL, reminds me of my youth in primary school. Our math textbook said that 3.14 is an approximation of π , and offered 22/7 as an alternative. So I mistakenly believed that 22/7 is the exact value of π , and I felt better than the other kids because I used 22/7 while they used 3.14 . I didn't know back then that π is irrational, and that 3.14 and 22/7 are about just as equally (in)accurate. 😅

On one hand, I appreciate the joke about engineers saying "about 3 but maybe round to 4", but that's honestly a way more physicist thing to say.

There are many kinds of consultants. How would a consultant engineer differ from an in-house engineer?

I an an engineer and you are quite correct, π is about 3.

22/7 says the engineer. Which i don't understand why that's easier to deal with. Who likes 7ths? As a computer programmer, i prefer to use the built-in constant. To me, asking what is pi(e) is like asking what is 2?

22/7 is about just as accurate as 3.14 . In primary school I thought that 22/7 was actually the exact value of π . (So I used 22/7 and felt better than the kids who just used 3.14 .)

@@mjolnir3309 What I meant is that it wasn't really a better approximation than 3.14 , but that I didn't realize it; I believed that my calculations were being exact. Working with decimals always seemed "non-exact" to me, so using 22/7 and writing answers as fractions of integers gave me a sense of getting at the "perfect" answer. That was until highschool, where I learned that π is irrational, and from then on I just kept π as a symbol in the outcome of calculations (unless specifically asked for a decimal approximation).
